Outlast is a horror game made by Red Barrels Games. The team at RBG is made up of industry veterans and now they have made Outlast, arguably the best horror game of this generation. The player starts the game as Miles Upshur, a journalist investigating a lead about the Mount Massive Asylum and uncovers that the place has been taken and turned upside down by a supernatural force. When you gain control of Miles you will be spooked from the onset. You will see people move about in the windows and once you enter the asylum there is no turning back. Miles is only armed with his quick wits and his camera documenting footage for his piece on Mount Massive. The camera is armed with Night Vision, it will aid you in dark areas. You cannot fight in the game so you must run and hide to survive the strange, twisted, and homicidal inmates that are all out to get you and have many ways to kill you.
In Outlast the player experiences the story just as Miles is but you will uncover notes and documents of recent events and projects inside the Asylum. The inmates are being controlled and as the game progresses you will start to answer the question, “when did things go to hell?”. The inmates will come for Miles as the music changes and his breathing becomes hastened. They will scout the area searching for Miles and some will inadvertently help him advance to the next area. The look of Outlast gives it a horror movie feel and when the game is set on high settings the nightmarish asylum is gruesome and terrifying. Blood, bodies, and experiments gone totally wrong await Miles as he collects his story.
The sound design on the game is great, the lighting and environments work hand and hand to ensure you are scared out of shorts. The controls are easy to master but the real challenge here is to escape your enemies and get to where they cannot harm you. The textures are smooth and have little to no pop-in and there is not a glitch in sight.
The game progresses with little to no down time and every play session will leave players wanting to dive right back in. You will want to play this game again and again. Miles will also uncover new things each time which he didn’t encounter previously as the world has random events that occur all around you.
Final Verdict: Forget Resident Evil and Dead Space, this game is the new standard in the survival horror genre. Outlast is a masterpiece and for $20 on Steam it is a must-own for any survival horror fan. Overall this game wins a perfect 10 out of 10 making it a Diamond Game on the RGN Rating Scale.
