Painkiller: Hell and Damnation is sequel of the 2004 original Painkiller and its expansions developed by Nordic Games the creators of the Darkstalkers series and The Farm 51.

Painkiller is a First Person Shooter title center around Daniel Garner who is given the task to collect souls by the Grim Reaper to save his girlfriend Sarah from the depths of hell. The game has the same feel of classic shooters from the era (think Unreal Tournament, Doom, Quake etc) but stands out due to the hellish setting. Dan has a killer arsenal of weapons ranging from shotguns, rifles, saw-launchers and more. The weapons also have alternate firing modes that aid you dispatching the enemies that are out to kill you. Each area sends a horde of enemies to kill you and you have to eliminate them to advance to the next area. You can find gold throughout the area to by shooting coffins or chest. Dan can also find ammo crates, and hidden golden cups to unlock “Tarot Cards” that will give special abilities and powers. When the demons fall you collect more souls for your quest you collect 66 souls you turn into a demon, who can disseminate your foes with ease.

Dan has a long road ahead of him as each area brings with it a bigger hoard of enemies with new enemy types. There are Demon Knights, Skeleton Soldiers, Dark Mages, Repears and a host of others. When Dan makes his way through the different levels there will be huge demons that are as huge as the height of the levels and will try stomp, slam and crush Dan into oblivion. You have to be quick and dispatch the enemies before they pile up and overwhelm you, which gives this game a classic fps feel which is missing from a lot of games in the genre today. You can even play this game with a friend via the games’ Co-Op mode.

Painkiller: Hell and Damnation does have a multiplayer suite that includes, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the flag and Survival mode. In the Survival mode you and a group of players have to fend off waves and waves of enemies during a set time limit, which opens up the match to become very frantic during play sessions. The only thing I can fault this game on is the lack of variety in the levels. It feels at times there is a straight forward march killing demons and making it to the end of the stage. The settings are cool, graveyards, haunted houses, broken cathedrals and more await Dan as he makes his trek to save the woman he loves and even the set pieces in the world (That I will not spoil in this review) will frighten you and the bloody body count will keep you on the edge of your seat. The problem is the world you traverse on is basically flat with objects and items scattered throughout only change the structure heading in and out of buildings. Those things aside Painkiller Hell and Damnation stays true to its roots breaks away from traditional shooters and delivers a thrilling yet sinister tale to one man’s road of redemption.

Final Verdict:

Hell and Damnation is a stellar sequel in the franchise. The crazy gunplay, supernatural power ups, and over the top enemies return to the single player with solid multiplayer modes. The only thing that hold is it back is the unchanging level design that are typically in retro style First Person Shooters such as this, other than that go and purchase this title today.
