Blacklight: Retribution is an Unreal Engine first person shooter that has been released on Windows PC through Steam as well as the next-generation PlayStation 4. Although the title is currently in beta, it’s also free-to-play – meaning you can download it now and play away to your heart’s content. Because this is still a beta, we will not assign a score or perform a full review on the title at this time. Be aware, if it wasn’t for the promise of changes inherent in a ‘beta’ title this would be getting a very bad score.
Blacklight: Retribution reminds us intensely of the Modern Combat: Domination title that hit the PSN on PlayStation 3. Both titles seem like they wish they were Call of Duty, but fail miserably to reach a minimum standard of quality. There are frame rate stuttering issues, lag issues, connectivity issues (sometimes we are told we have no internet connection even though the rest of PS4’s PSN is working fine including the Party Chat).
It seems like no matter what you do in Blacklight: Retribution the action is very random, luck-based, and glitch-filled. The controls feel wonky and take a lot of adjusting before they feel nearly normal. The maps are too large or just not populated enough so that means lots of running around to the action just for you to die and start over again. Host migration occurs on a regular basis, and hosts get such an advantage that it’s ridiculous. There are also CE-34878-0 errors occurring at times which will crash the game and prompt you to send a detailed report to Sony.
Zombie Studios may still make this into a decent piece of shooter. Somehow there is still a dedicated community playing the game, a group of newcomers who find it promising, and a potential for a real profit to be made on the micro-transaction system while allowing a free competitive FPS game to exist on PS4. However, at this time it is an almost unplayable game on PlayStation 4. We implore Zombie Studios to work on the issues we’ve revealed here and unfortunately there’s not really much more to say about the game until these issues are fixed.
