Castle of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse Review

Castle of Illusion Xbox Review RGN 2

Castle of Illusion is a remaster of sorts of the classic and successful Sega Genesis game of the same name. Now, based off the original title which I never got a chance to play but did watch some gameplay of online, there are some differences in major points even though that is not the purpose of this review. But besides the point, lets jump into it shall we?

Soundtrack, Audio, Voice:  The soundtrack consists of, well, Disney sounding music… of course only makes sense right? While it usually keeps an oddly happy tune even during dark parts of the game this seems off at times. A Narrator will narrate Mickey’s events over the course of the game as the chapters move along. Mickey also talks every now and then being besides the Narrator and the grunts of creatures and other things these are the only sounds besides effects taking place.

Graphics, Physics, Glitches, Engine Performance:  The graphics are not the best but fit the gameplay style well at least, and make the environments have a cool look. Not too many glitches came up in this game and it has very super ‘cartoonish’ physics when looking at things like how Mickey jumps and how enemies react to being attacked.

Controls: Castle of Illusion controls basically like a standard platformer. There’s not really any depth besides attacks, jumping, and moving despite some segments changing the camera angle slightly between a second and third person perspective which can mix the gameplay up for players new to the genre or with no experience in the original Castle of Illusion such as myself.

Gameplay: As I stated before Castle of Illusion plays like an everyday platformer with no real difficulty. That would make sense since it seems to be targeted towards a younger audience of people. Boss fights are extremely easily usually as well, for example a segment where you have to fight a Grumpy Old Tree is incredibly easy as players just jump over him when he rolls to attack. Sometimes you get special segments like running away from a rolling apple Indiana Jones-style.

Story: The story is basically save the damsel in distress while fighting monsters along the way, unlocking doors to get to new locations then bam – final fight. The game’s really uninteresting plot takes gaming back to the simple idea of linear and predictable plot lines but this somehow seemed refreshing to me after playing some other titles that have constant plot twists and changes in story direction. While it is not the greatest story in the world it’s also not bad and younger audiences will enjoy it as well as fans of the original game and Disney fans in general.

Final Verdict: Castle of Illusion is a game that is fun but at the same time very simple and made for simple minds. No challenge is presented but the game manages to remain fun in the gameplay aspect without a  juggernaut story and decent level design. Castle of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse gets an 8 out of 10 making it a Silver RGN Game.
