Octodad - Dadliest Catch

Octodad: Dadliest Catch is an indie game that has arrived on Windows PC, Mac OS X, and Linux gaming platforms (and is coming to PS4 soon) from developer Young Horses who have put together one of the most unique and interesting pieces of entertainment seen in a while from the games industry. Although not your ordinary game, the controls found in Octodad: Dadliest Catch are intuitive and fun. The plot is pretty thickened by the subtle realization that there’s more to do with the underwater takeover of the surface than appears to be, but we’re not one for spoiling storylines here at RealGamerNewz.

The gameplay found in the title contains various forms of action including some that resemble the wonky “player versus controls” aspect found in titles like Surgeon Simulator 2013, while others feel like puzzles done right. The humor in the game comes in at key moments through the fusion of dialogue and gameplay while graphics play their part in keeping the light-hearted atmosphere afloat. It’s hard to imagine any type of gamer disliking this title.

Although the novelty of having to control everything as an octopus creature disguised as a human in a suit does wear off eventually, the fact remains that there are mysteries to be uncovered and an overlying reasoning to what’s going on that makes the player want to push forward and discover the root of the events they are witnessing. This coupled with what seem to be challenges of a mental sort, using classic gameplay tricks to mask the unique nature of these mechanics seems to keep Octodad just on the borderline of innovative and comfortably familiar. This is a great feeling and helps keep the fun factor boosted at all times.

Artificial Intelligence on the enemies players encounter are very straight forward and the challenge in the game really does focus on using completely unusual and abnormal controls. This really does help replicate the feeling of operating in a human body while the player themselves is actually of the squid-like variety – giving an alternative reality feeling to the whole experience.

The characters in the game mainly consist of every day people going on about their lives which the player must avoid arousing the suspicion of. Certain characters will be able to detect the presence of an aquatic freak of nature like Octodad, while others go on blissful and ignorant to the strange miracle of sea creature life going on around them. Other characters are much more drawn out both in animation, artificial intelligence, as well as in animation and dialogue. Fleshed out characters that help mold the plot arch of the game become important to the player as a way of gauging progress towards a deeper meaning coming up, or often provide reason and instruction for the task at hand in a way that feels organic.

The music and sound effects often contain comedic value in Octodad: Dadliest Catch. The game’s starting point is that the sea creature players take control of has taken the place of a real life human husband in a family of four. The wife of the player seems to understand the speech given by the player, but most other people around are concentrated more on main character’s appearance.

Final Verdict:

Octodad must go through his epic journey with or without your help, and there will be times when the challenges presented in the game make players want to give up on him. Overall though, the interesting and different feel given by Octodad: Dadliest Catch is sure to give birth to a new type of experience for gamers worldwide.
