BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is an 2D Fighting game from Arc System Works and Zen United for the PC. The game originally released on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009 and serves as the spiritual to Guilty Gear. The game’s story centers around Ragan, The Bloodedge and his attempt to destroy the NOL which helped control who could tap into Ars Magus, the power created by Science and Magic thus causing total chaos in the world. There has been a bounty placed upon Ragna’s head for his actions and the fighters will stop at nothing to claim it. The Story is told through Cutscenes, text with art splashes as well as Pre-Bout Chatter. The story ties each and every character together in some form or fashion making you care about the cast as a whole. Players will laugh, cry, and cheer at certain moments in the story and it will bring them closer to their favorite character.

The fighting system has a 8:1 control style meaning that every direction of the controller, fight stick or keyboard used with each character will yield a different move and both are very responsive. Every character in BBCT has there own personality and special moves with no copycats in sight. BlazBlue’s controls flawlessly on the PC and the mouse and keyboard functionality can be used in place of a fight-stick if players can’t afford one or if they want to avoid the hassle of purchasing the right converter. In the games Arcade and Online modes players can test their skills against the computer or human opponents just as they did on the console versions. Practice mode is back as well giving players a chance to spar with their favorite characters and hone their skills. The long load times that plagued the consoles versions of the game are back in full force, which is a disappointment considering the fact the game is a digital download. The games’ online is back and is improved by the stabilization of the PC servers and has very little lag.

The graphics and sound design of BBCT are impeccable. The PC opens up the already amazing color pallet from the original release and adds insane detail. Players will be able to see every nook and cranny of the gorgeous backgrounds. The entertaining voice acting and killer soundtrack is back and they both still hold up. The banter before and during fights is still awesome and will have players chuckling from time to time. It is disappointing though that Continuum Shift and Continuum Shift Extend aren’t offered as add-on’s to give players the full package. BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma is right around the corner and it’s a shame that they will have to purchase these titles separately to prepare them for the sequel but its still an overall quality title all its own.

Final Verdict:

BlazBlue Calamity Trigger is still a solid fighter that PC fighting game fans should pick up. It is a bit of a disappointment that long load times of the games original release are still present and the games sequels aren’t offered as expansions/add on’s but these things alone should shy away games that haven’t played the game or others who are returning to the series.
