Awesomenauts Assemble is a 2D side-scrolling MOBA game from Romino Games & Abstraction Games.for the Playstation 4. This game is a re-release of the 2012 original “Awesomenauts”. Whenever evil forces need to be defeated and there is coin to be had the Awesomenauts answer the call. In AA players can take control of the Nauts or the opposing faction to take out the other teams Solar Collector or their home base. The teams need to have their Solar Collector in working condition to complete their contracts so who ever destroys the other teams home base wins.

The Awesomenauts have a lot of members but only three can step on to the battlefield at a time and will have the help of base drones as well as turrets to help you break the opposing squad defenses each with their own abilities and skills. In true MOBA style there are unlimited lives and the games resources (money and health) are gained on the battlefield. When the player first spawns or when they die they will be dispatched on to the level via a drop ship. The Nauts can purchase new abilities and upgrades on the field with the money they collect from dropping in to battle, collecting throughout the world and vanquishing the enemy.

When players hit the turf with their Awesomenaut they control them with the analog stick and jump with the X button to jump . When players purchase additional powers from the store those will be automatically assigned to the face buttons for use throughout the match. Their are cool down times with some abilities so that they are not abused by the players. Depending on which character gamers select they will have to adapt to their characters combat skills and abilities to survive in battle as their health is very limited. The controls are a bit on the slow side which is standard for some MOBA’s but for AA the pace should be hastened because of the side-scrolling setup. The Nauts use close quarters combat heavy fire power, as well as long range weapons and gadgets to dispatch their enemies.

AA boast both single and multi-player modes that are both online and offline for gamers to enjoy even if they lose their internet connection. The presentation of Awesomenatus Assemble is akin to a Saturday morning cartoon. The games intro cut-scene is made as a cartoon intro sequence complete with its own theme song. The characters interact with each other with very cheesy and campy dialog while the levels are very cartoonist with goofy looking set pieces. The levels have also have different layouts but are primarily the same.

They also have secret passages as well as alien life forms that can be dispatched for money and/or health. The only problem with the levels in Awesomenauts Assemble is that they are too large and combined with the slow speed of the characters it really slows down the action. The sound design of AA is amazing the songs, the voice acting and sound effects are all top notch and play off the cartoon show vibe; rounding out the overall presentation. Awesomenauts Assemble is a good MOBA game that plays perfectly off its 2D aesthetics that anyone can play but some players may will have to adapt to do fully enjoy the game.

Final Verdict

Awesomenauts Assemble is a breath of fresh air in the MOBA market that is inviting and accessible to all gamers. It brings everything that was great from the original release to the Playstation 4 as well as it all of its problems. The slow movement of the characters and the huge levels may offset some players but overall the game is fun to play alone or with friends. on and offline.
