TRITTON Kunai PS3/PS4 Headset Review

TRITTON Kunai

Last week I received a TRITTON Kunai headset from ThinkGeek.com. The TRITTON Kunai is a gaming headset compatible with the PS3, PS4, and PS Vita. I tested it on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Apparently the headset can also be used with an iPod via the 3.5mm cable.

Right out of the box I noticed the Kunai headset felt very high quality. It feels like a sturdy headset and not some cheap little toy like so many other “value” headsets turn out to be. TRITTON is a fairly well known name among competitive gamers so a well made headset is pretty much to be expected. Considering it was just $49.99 at ThinkGeek, the Kunai is actually one of TRITTON’s cheapest models though, so that was cause for a little skepticism when some of their other headsets go for well above $100.

I tried it out first by playing Black Ops 2 on PS3 and did run into an issue. The way that this headset needs to be hooked up for it to work properly with a PS3, you have to be using RCA connectors. Otherwise you’re not going to get in-game sound in the headset. The only thing you’ll be able to hear is when other people talk. This is a problem because many gamers probably use an HDMI cable, not RCA component cables since HDMI provides higher quality video. But you won’t really be able to use this headset if you’re using HDMI. So you’re left with the decision of whether you want to sacrifice video for audio.

TRITTON KunaiIt also presents a problem in terms of creating a mess of wires. A 3.5mm wire leading from the headset first connects into a small in-line volume control box that comes with the headset (pictured left). This has a few dials on it that allow you to adjust the volume of incoming/outgoing audio as well as mute yourself if you want. This is helpful for making adjustments while gaming without having to fumble with buttons on the side of the headset itself.

So a wire runs into that volume control box then out the other side. That wire then splits into two wires – one ends in a USB connector that goes into the PS3 and the other ends in the RCA components that plug into the back of your television. Then the RCA components that originally went from your PS3 to your TV now have to be plugged into the backs of the components from the headset’s RCA cable (they have dual male/female ends). When all is said and done, this can lead to one heck of a wire nest.

Using the headset with PS4 is much simpler, the 3.5mm wire can simply plug into your controller and poof! You’re good to go! So if you end up buying this headset I would definitely recommend using it for gaming on a PS4.

As for audio, the headset is awesome. The ear cups are very well padded so wearing this headset for extended periods of gaming is still comfortable. The headrail is adjustable, of course. Audio is very crisp and clear and gives you a slight advantage over gamers not using headsets. Unless you are used to using a good headset, you might not realize just how important sound is in first-person shooters like Call of Duty. There’s a reason there are perks in the game that reduce the amount of sound you make when sprinting. When using your TV speakers, the sound is probably negligible but when you have a headset on you can be alerted to someone’s presence when you hear them stomping around behind you.

The sound quality captured by the microphone on the TRITTON Kunai is very clear as well. You know how sometimes when you send someone a message online and you listen to it beforehand you realize you sound nothing like you do in real life on the message? That’s because the microphone you’re using sucks. That’s not the case here. You sound totally normal.

Specs/Features:

  • Speaker Diameter: 40mm
  • Supra-aural (on-ear) cups swivel to provide a comfortable around-the-neck resting position
  • Neodymium magnet
  • Frequency Response: 25Hz–20kHz
  • Total Harmonic Distortion (THD): <1%
  • Resistance: 16 ohms
  • Dimensions: RCA cable length 14 ft., 3.5mm cable length 3 ft.
  • Adjustable headrail
  • Detachable microphone

Final Verdict

For $49.99 I would definitely recommend this headset for PS4 gamers. It’s very affordable while still providing good quality and several features. If you want to use it for PS3 gaming, just make sure you’re using RCA cables.
