ONE PIECE Unlimited World Red is an action / adventure game with open level design and three dimensional gameplay elements. Supervised by the Unlimited Series Creator Eiichiro Od, right off the bat Unlimited World Red gives players the ability to launch from rooftop to rooftop in the open world anime setting that the game takes place in. As you fly through the air from place to place there are also collectibles scattered around requiring specific jumps to be discovered and performed. There’s also loot and encounters with townsfolk as well as enemies. Combat often can consist of throwing enemies into each other, destroying barriers by collecting keywords from an area, which usually involves hunting and defeating certain enemies on a given level, and other chaotic activities. All the while, players are able to level up each character and ability.

The game is actually really smooth for a current-gen release and this goes for the graphics as well as engine performance. Gameplay during battle feels just like an anime showdown from the famed series by the same name as this game’s title. Players partake in a number of well known moves from the main character Luffy as well as playable characters Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Franky, and Brook who are all on a quest together involving the Straw Hat crew taking on a series of situations, scenarios, and bosses including Rob Lucci and Caesar Clown to name a couple. There are also a number of unique moves fully animated to high precision in high frame rate for each character which is refreshing to see in a world where so much is re-used these days.

Fighting in Unlimited World Red feels fluid and gives the feeling of immersion as if one is somehow controlling a live animated television show. Using your arms to stretch and attack, crazy speed punch moves, and more including special attack moves (all brought to life from development studio Ganbarion and based on the television anime series the franchise is known for). These special attack moves can be leveled up as players progress throughout the game. There’s also a Counter Attack system, long distance targeting, lock on, and free aim. take out hordes of enemies to progress on the way to each new stage. Rush Combos are great for curbing the button mash syndrome, and rare reward items chosen by the mood at the end of beating a chapter.

Each chapter is an episode which ends with a ‘to be continued’ moment keeping the player craving more. Cut-scenes bring the world to life around you. ONE PIECE Unlimited World Red does a great job of delivering a real anime experience while keeping frames per second very high, action very intense, and enemies coming at you in an unexpected ways. Fishing, catching insects, or doing local multiplayer battle are among other side-content experiences complete with their own level up systems and equipment items. Jobs are also offered to players along the way as side-content by in-game characters with their own sets of problems and needs while playing through the game’s main story. There are various dangers in the open world to face while navigating as well.

Unlimited World Red features some great boss battles which help progress the story more organically. Having multiple playable characters unlocked leveled up individually keeps battles feeling fresh through time as each is mastered for their own ability. Players will also explore areas with computer (or real life people) playing each character to make up your squad on each exploration attempt. change leader on the fly to play as some one else on the battlefield or to use their abilities to get through a challenge in the game-world while pursuing special interest missions or the main story-line itself. Each character presented in the game (nine in total) has their own unique set of moves and style and work together to defeat the enemy. There are even some QTE style GUARD moves which sometimes appear and are different for each character / given circumstances of the battle situation.

Looking at it from the big picture, players are also faced with expansion and development of the community at large. By defeating the environment around you to stock up on supplies such as rusty scrap iron, flower nectar, and gunpowder. Don’t forget to find and open all chests and destroy all small shrubs to collect sacks of gold or loose coins. Use your materials to develop the land around you, allowing shops and new encounters to be created thanks to your investment of resources in the areas you frequent. The game also features luxury replay value assets such as item accumulation / storage and unlockable clothing as well as attribute modifiers that temporarily enhance your crew’s abilities to give that extra boost mid-battle. Last, but not least – there’s also a companion character named Pato who helps out during the journey both on and off of the battlefield. Unlimited World Red features AI Companions, Local Multiplayer / Co-Op (2 players on PS3 + Wii U version and 4 players on 3DS and Vita).

Final Verdict:

ONE PIECE Unlimited World Red is a highly addictive and entertaining action / anime adventure that brings the thrill of the television franchise to the gaming world once again. This time, the world is more open than ever, the action is more interesting, and with tons of playable characters the combinations are endless. Using each different attack on the enemy at your disposal, players face hordes and bosses alike. With plenty of side content, an intriguing story-line campaign with the ability for co-op, and the new Coliseum Mode, Unlimited World Red is the most complete package for a ONE PIECE game yet. If you’re lucky you might still be able to pick up the “Day One Edition” of the game with an exclusive quest branch as well as costume content.
