The unfortunate part of doing business with Nintendo is that it may take a very, very long time before it becomes clear to fans whether this project became cancelled or was fully realized by a staff with a creative vision worthy of the Nintendo Seal of Approval. The Wall Street Journal and large, well known video games publications are reporting on this as if it is pure fact, which typically means that there is more known about this behind the scenes which may currently be protected by NDA contracts (Non-Disclosure Agreements) signed by the press. There’s also the chance that this is just a very early business discussion which hasn’t fostered into a full production yet.
Given that the Film and Game Industry are melding together more and more with Assassin’s Creed, Ratchet & Clank, and many others all getting their own film re-incarnations, it’s safe to say that this is a 50 / 50. Even though many are asking “is it real?” it’s clear that some form of business arrangement is being made even if Nintendo + Netflix would later deny such claims.
