Life is Strange - Episode 1 Chrysalis Review

Presentation: Life is Strange is a modern day story of time travel, teenage angst, and the high school story wrapped up into one. In gameplay terms this is an episodic, cinematic, interactive drama adventure game, with point and click elements. As we all know time travel is sticky business. Throughout the course of the game you can see how simply rewinding time and changing a choice can alter something, for better, or for worse.

Soundtrack, Audio, Voice: The game uses modern band music that women would like as Max’s favorite songs. The score is usually a nice piano theme that resembles the introduction and new day theme of the first episode. Voice acting is pretty well done. Teenagers sound like teenagers for once in a game, or movie. Saying words such as “chill” and “hella” which is very authentic.

Graphics, Physics, Glitches, Engine Performance: The graphics are not the best you could argue, but look sort of like a painting come to life in some aspects. In its simplicity it looks great to someone such as myself though sometimes lip syncing does not always add up, which draws you out of the cinematic experience from time to time. I experienced one crash within the game when it could not transition through cut scenes during a load time. That’s to be expected though with many episodic games since the budget is usually lower and they take less time to produce.

Controls / Gameplay: At least you do not find yourself pressing triangle all the time. You can walk around the campus, and other small locations you go to, look at certain people or objects, and even take pictures of those things when allowed. Talking and making choices is one of the biggest gameplay elements in this game. Choices seems to be a recurring theme in our modern society, teenage years are where a lot of big ones are made. But imagine if you could just rewind time and simply choose something else? You can only see the short term consequences not the long term, but it would be nice to have multiple options that you could change right away. That is what you can do in this game, time travel and choices, simply rewind time if you wanted to choose something else. Rewinding time can even help you find objects when you need to do simple puzzles or something of the sort.

Story: You play as a young girl named Max. She is the shy girl in school that never really talks. But one day everything changes. She has a vision, or maybe she even jumped into the future, she sees destruction, then bam!  she’s back in the class room. As her story continues throughout the day she realizes her true power of being able to rewind time to her favor. How you choose to rewind time is your choice, you can help others, or simply not. As you meet more and more characters you can get a sense of who they are. Though this is like a TV show pilot we are merely introduced, but I am looking forward to the character development that will occur very soon.

Replay Ability: Average – I imagine the replay value will increase as the other episodes release.

Final Verdict:

Life Is Strange seems like the perfect modern day telling of the coming of age story. With interesting characters, great design, authenticity, and a plot coming to form, I look forward to what Dontnod Entertainment has to come. This studios’ first IP since Remember Me has all the uniqueness and charm that went into that game, despite being way different. I give Life Is Strange – Episode 1: Chrysalis an 8 out of 10 making it one of RGN’s Silver Games, be sure to check out my Video Review above as well.
