How Warner Bros Will Fill Rocksteady’s Shoes for Batman: Arkham Origins

By Derek Janson in Original Pieces

Earlier this week, it has been announced that the next installment of Warner Bros.’ Batman Arkham series will be released this fall . Reports suggested what has now been confirmed to be a prequel to the previous installments. Furthermore, this title is being developed by WB games company WB Montreal instead of the original Developers, Rocksteady. This probably means that Rocksteady is working on either a sequel to Arkham City or an entirely new IP. Personally I don’t know much about WB Montreal but seeing as they have access to all of Rocksteady’s Arkham assets, and possible assistance from Rocksteady, it should be smooth sailing.

Seeing as this is a Prequel, this will recount Batman’s earliest encounters with his famous Rogue Gallery, some of which we can only hope villains that didn’t make the cut in the previous games will appear, like Blackmask, Deathstroke (who will be on the cover of Game Informer next month) and even maybe returning favorites like Killer Croc, Scarecrow, Ras al’ Ghul and even the Joker.

But as skilled and resourceful batman is, he can’t always fight alone. This can present an opportunity to WB Montreal to add allies, aside from nightwing and Robin, possibly other legends such as Green Lantern or even Superman (my favorite would be Huntress). An ability for summoning heroes to assist you in battle makes sense, but a Co-op feature would really makes things fun. However this can present issues if added to the single-player mode so a separate mode would work better. No mention of multiplayer was said so this remains to be seen

Another anticipated feature is Location. Two that comes to mind is Blüdhaven and of course, Gotham City, which seems more likely. Having batman in a much more populated area presents more challenges but more gameplay opportunities to make the most of his vast array of gadgets and, even more exciting, a chance to operate his collection of vehicles.

Some people might be a little worried that a new Dev is working on such an acclaimed series but remember two things: Warner Bros. & Rocksteady wouldn’t just hand over batman to them if they weren’t confident in their abilities. And second, Rocksteady was a rookie when they first released Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009, their only other title at the time they made being Urban Chaos for the Xbox & PS2, which received mixed reviews. The fall line up looks even better with The Dark Knight added to the list. Montreal has some big shoes to fill, but I personally am confident they’ll create an experience worthy of the acclaimed Arkham series.
