It’s been rumored for awhile now and eventually confirmed at the PlayStation 4 Sony Conference that Diablo III will make it’s way to the PlayStation 3 and recently announced PlayStation 4. My guess is realistically we won’t see it until early next year. This got me thinking, shouldn’t we have some kind of cross-platform gameplay, seeing as the PS4 will be architecturally built like a PC? It would be an idea worth considering since Sony is typically open minded to this sort of thing.
Microsoft attempted this with Shadowrun for the Xbox 360 but it’s execution was pretty underwhelming. Credit should be given to Microsoft for taking the risk and one everyone should take a second look. When Defiance was being published it was learned that the team behind the MMO Shooter wanted to allow 360, PS3, and PC players to game together but Microsoft declined. Microsoft also allowed Final Fantasy XI Online to have cross-platform play, but that was a long time ago.
Sony’s online service has been increasingly improving as of late, while also being very supportive of indie game developers. With this in mind, Perhaps they can extend the same courtesy to PC game makers and come to some kind of agreement on how to implement this gameplay feature.
But I admit, there could be problems. Graphics would be a mixed bag between the versions, online servers might not function properly to operate two different systems and the interface could look like a mess. All because PCs are made to support different system requirements whereas consoles are designed with standardize hardware.
But I’m looking into the future. The lines between consoles and PC continues to blur with each passing year, and one day, they’ll be indistinguishable from each other. It’s inevitable, whether you agree with me or not. Hell, Valve’s Steambox trying to fight it’s way to your living room, so what does that tell you? Maybe this whole article is nothing more than ravings of a madman and cross-platform gaming will never come to pass. But you’ve got to make a few wrong choices to get the right one. Someone has to make the choice. All that’s left is who will choose first, Microsoft or Sony.Follow RealGamerNewz: YouTube | Facebook | Twitter | Google+ | RSS
