Red Dead Redemption 2 makes over $725 million in 3 days, bigger than any film, music, book, or tv show

RDR2 is a cinematic action game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One which tells a story of the last real outlaw gang in the wild, wild west. Historical accuracy of the 1899 time period is paired with some of the most well polished storytelling, gameplay design, visual effects, and soundtrack ever seen. The result is that Rockstar Games’ latest release has set a new record of ‘largest entertainment launch weekend of all time’ by making over $725 million in its first 3 days and surpassing every film, television show, book, or video game (except GTA V) ever made in sales.

Video games are an ever-expanding medium, and Rockstar Games knows how to marry cinematography with interactivity more so than most game studios. Their willingness to dedicate to quality at any cost has come under scrutiny more than once, most recently with the scandal of co-founder and executive Dan Houser bragging about 100 hour work weeks. But work culture aside, this game is undeniably the most highly produced game of recent years and does a good job of showing the world what video games are all about.

While video games are uniquely positioned to combat issues like piracy, given their cutting-edge technological nature, the gap between the highest selling video games and the highest selling films cannot be denied. Video games are the new favorite medium for storytelling across humanity and continue to grow mainstream acceptance from new demographics every year.

Grand Theft Auto V is still the record holder of largest entertainment launch of all time with $1 billion USD grossed in 3 days but Red Dead Redemption 2 took place on a weekend whereas GTA V released on a Tuesday. RDR 2 is the second biggest launch of all time, and takes first place for launch weekends. Just to be clear, the western game will have to continue performing at this rate if it hopes to surpass the long term sales of GTA V though which are still piling up to this day. Call of Duty’s Black Ops 4 previously held the title of Top Selling Game of 2018 with $500 million USD being made in 24 hours, but that honor has also been snatched up by RDR2.

Other records set by Red Dead Redemption 2 include:

  • Highest ever pre-orders for a PlayStation Network game
  • Highest Day One sales for a PlayStation Network game
  • Highest opening 3 day sales for a PlayStation Network game

The exact amount of units sold for Red Dead Redemption 2 has not been revealed by Rockstar nor any digital platform holders. The amount of money being declared in revenue may be added to by various special editions. However, Red Dead Online will likely bring in a lot of income as well as long term sales continuing to add to this successful launch.

At the time of this writing, Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 95 million units worldwide and grossed over $6 billion USD in revenue, including revenue generated by Grand Theft Auto Online – which was later added to GTA V as a free online expansion to the game. Rockstar Games is expected to publish a sequel to the PlayStation 2 classic “Bully” next, which is sure to draw controversy possibly fueling sales even higher as more and more gamers buy new systems and are able to become customers of the world’s most successful entertainment medium.
