[Update: This title has been confirmed and announced as The Outer Worlds at The Game Awards 2018 but may or may not be published by Take-Two Interactive as previously expected although the game will be developed by Microsoft-owned Obsidian Entertainment and remain multi-platform.]
You may have heard that the team over at Xbox has been purchasing big name studios in an effort to increase the output and quality of their first party lineup of games next-gen. As part of these high profile acquisitions Obsidian Entertainment is now a subsidiary of Microsoft Studios Global Publishing and has been promised an unlimited budget as well as creative freedom for its projects.
While this should lead to some very exciting releases during the next generation of video game consoles, there was already a nearly finished product getting ready to prep for reveal and subsequent launch in the works at Obsidian. The game appears to be an RPG title which Obsidian has begun teasing and will release under publishing and distribution by Take-Two Interactive.
Fans of the genre have already started to draw comparisons based on the recent tease material consisting of 50’s inspired advertisements of mock brands made to represent a dark but almost humorous reality in which the game will take place, as well as a website dedicated to the same. Many have called this unannounced project “Obsidian’s answer to Fallout” with inspirations expected to drip in from the BioShock series as well.
As many may know, the original Fallout and Fallout 2 creators split off into two teams after Interplay shut down; Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Entertainment. Both are comprised of many industry veterans and while Obsidian was able to secure the privilege of creating Fallout: New Vegas for Bethesda, inXile has also made their own tribute to the genre with Wasteland 2 – widely regarded as a modern day sequel to Fallout 2. Microsoft has acquired both of these companies as first party studios which could lead to some very interesting Xbox announcements in the future.
However, Obsidian’s currently teased project was already secured for a publishing and distribution deal formed before this acquisition allowing Take-Two Interactive to play part to its hope of success. It is currently unclear what that means for the platforms we will see the game released on and / or any exclusivity of sequels that could come to the franchise in the future. At this point, we just don’t know that much other than rumors that the title is using Unreal Engine 4. It is expected that the game will be given a formal announcement at The Game Awards 2018 which takes place on Thursday, December 6, 2018, little under a week from now.
