Worlds Will Change…
With a full orchestra, dozens of world premieres, and world famous presenters from within the entertainment industries, The Game Awards 2018 took place in the Microsoft Theater (Los Angeles, California) and is one of the most digitally distributed products of all time and was streamed live in 4K HDR resolution as well as VR formats around the globe on more platforms than any other industry event or live awards show in history. In this article we will cover the play-by-play as well as provide coverage of the awards, world premiere announcements, game trailers, some commentary, and the full high definition replay footage of the event in case you missed the incredible ride.
The Game Awards 2018 pre-show opened up with an orchestral symphony followed by a sizzle reel containing games like Marvel’s Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, Red Dead Redemption 2, Death Stranding, Black Ops 4, and more. Geoff Keighley recapped the nominees, presented a few awards, and discussed the expansion of The Game Awards which was a massive hit in 2017 as it garnered a positive gamer and critic response. Voting on the awards has been expanded to even more platforms such as Discord or Amazon Alexa. Viewers can also receive free games in their Steam account while watching as well as receive discounts on nominated titles live.
The tag-line “Worlds Will Change” is also discussed with titles like No Man’s Sky and Fortnite highlighted as titles that have evolved a great deal since their initial release spawning the “Ongoing Games” category. Many announcements are said to change games during the show. Over 65 publications helped create the nominees while winners are chosen between a combination of mixed jury, fan-voting, and unbiased input methods overseen by a board of judges.
Red Dead Redemption, Celeste, God of War, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Monster Hunter World, and Marvel’s Spider-Man are all nominated for Game of the Year 2018. The Pre-Show gets its first World Premiere for a Nintendo Switch title called Sayonara Wild Hearts describing itself as a Pop Album Video Game starring Howling Moons, Stereo Lovers, Hermit64, Little Death, and more. The game features flashy neon graphics and animated models with a release coming in 2019.
The controversial Josef Fares took stage and told Geoff Keighley he should get his own award for how great the awards show has become over the years in addition to expressing his gratitude to be back on stage. Josef is nominated for Best Game Direction of his co-op game, A Way Out.
Black Ops 4, Dead Cells, Destiny 2 Forsaken, Far Cry 5, and Mega Man 11 were all nominated for Best Action Game. Dead Cells took the prize and its developers at Motion Twin took stage to receive their award from Joseph and Geoff.
Another World Premiere debuted a new title from 505 Games’ new Montreal studio which show Kindred Aerospace clips being shown in a ship which apparently has explored space with humans on board. The game’s theme for settling new planets is contrasted by a grim vibe. Sign-ups for more info are at savageplanetgame.com and the title is revealed to be coming for PS4, Xbox, and PC. Gameplay will be shown in 2019 but until then teasers and hints will be revealed as part of an ongoing process.
Best Role Playing Game contained nominated Dragon Quest XI, Monster Hunter World, Ni No Kuni II, Octopath Traveler, and Pillars of Eternity II. Geoff announces that Monster Hunter World has won and representatives for Capcom took the stage to receive the award. They discuss their goal has been to make a game which will win awards, from the very beginning. In a few days a new announcement will come from Capcom regarding the MHW team.
Twitter has partnered with The Game Awards to create their own award relating to the photos being shared by gamers online every day. An interactive extension for Twitch also allows content creators to predict the winners of The Game Awards and this will be tracked to see who was the most accurate in the end.
Cloud9, Fnatic, London Spitfire, OG, and Astralis are all nominated for Best ESports Team which is won by Cloud9 for the third time in a row. Best ESports Game nominees included CS:GO, DOTA 2, Fortnite, League of Legends, and Overwatch which was awarded to Overwatch for the second time in a row. The Best ESports Event nominees were ELEague Major: Boston 2018, EVO 2018, LoL World Championship, Overwatch League Grand Finals, and The International 2018 with LoL World Championship winning. The Best ESports Host nominees were Alex Mendez, Alex Richardson, Anders Blume, Eefje Depoorte. The Best ESPorts Coach nominees were Reapered, Ppasarel, Zonic, Falco, Yamato Cannon, and YNK with Reapered taking the win. Best ESports Moment nominees were C9 Comeback Win in triple VS Faze, G2 Beating RNG, KT vs IG Base Race, OG’s MAssive upset of LGD, and SonicFOX to which C9 took the win.
A new World Premiere launches a moment later from the creators of The Stanley Parable which was nominated for many awards in 2013 but did not take a win unfortunately. The joke is made that they’ve locked the source code away forever, until they realize it hasn’t come out on consoles quite yet. New endings, new content, new adventure, and new fun is teased for Stanley who will see his experience release on consoles for The Stanley Parable: Ultimate Deluxe Version in 2019 on consoles and PC.
Best Student Game was awarded to Combat 2018 (renamed to Tanknarok), a game from Norway. Nominees were Combat 2018, Dash Quasar, Jera, Liff, AND Re:Charge.
Among Trees from FJRD Interactive was given a World Premiere. The serenity of the wilderness, running waters, plants growing, nature’s beauty is captured in the first moments of the pre-alpha trailer. The game will reach Steam Early Access in 2019. With this, the pre-show concluded and the main show began.
Shawn Layden, Phil Spencer, and Reggie Fils-Aimé (the bosses of Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo) all took stage together right next to each other and discussed coming together as a community to celebrate the most immersive and entertaining medium in the world. They announce they are united to their commitment to pushing the industry forward and wish luck to all nominees and congratulations to all winners.
The Game Awards Orchestra took stage next and performed a brand new theme for the awards show with gaming footage timed to the melodies playing behind them. Geoff Keighley took stage again and formally began the awards show after thanking the orchestra and welcoming the audience.
The first big award is presented by Jacksepticeye and Pokimane who were nominated for content creator awards. Best Narrative nominees included Detroit: Become Human, God of War, Life Is Strange 2: Episode 1, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Red Dead Redemption 2. The winner was Red Dead Redemption 2 for which Michael Unsworth of Rockstar Games took stage to speak. He thanked the fans of the game and stated how incredible it feels for the developers to watch players worldwide enjoying the game and he spoke about how fantastic all nominees are this year.
Another World Premiere is debuted after a Nintendo Switch splash screen and the Avengers are seen on-screen as a cinematic and gameplay mix are displayed for the co-op multiplayer title the world has been rumoring but never seen before. X-Men are also shown, and a number of surprising Marvel characters. The game is Marvel’s Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order exclusively on Nintendo Switch during 2019.
The actor and writer / director Jonah Hill took stage next and gave a shout out to Woody Jackson. He will go on to introduce Greg Thomas who has been in the industry for over 30 years leading to NBA 2K among other projects. The Industry Icon award is bestowed upon him and a sizzle reel of various projects he has had a hand in are shown including Pipe Dream, many many classic sports titles, and modern game franchises like WWE 2K and NBA 2K which is said to be the greatest basketball game in the world by Michael Jordan himself.
His company Visual Concepts is also celebrated as Greg Thomas takes the stage and accepts the award while discussing his place in the industry. He states that his passion has never been about making a name for himself but instead has been about making great games. Many sacrifices and the loyalty of his family are also mentioned as part of the road he has taken to make so many blockbuster games. The business partner and co-founder Scott Patterson as well as his brother and the leader of the NBA 2K team Jeff Thomas are invited on stage by the Industry Icon winner. 6 worldwide studios and over 350 employees are considered family by this Industry Icon who also thanks the executives at Take-Two Interactive for believing in him and his team and giving them the freedom to make their games.
The Game Awards and Facebook Gaming took a few moments throughout the show to recognize Global Gaming Citizens including Steven Spohn of AbleGamers who figured out how to play video games even while being disabled and made it into a career in which he can help other people with disabilities to play video games. The world told him to go home and get comfortable since he may die soon, but instead he has made the world a valuable experience for himself and reached out into the world to help others as well through AbleGamers. Global Citizen is a movement using its collective voice to end extreme poverty by 2030.
The producers of Rocket League (a two-time Game Awards winner) revealed the next chapter for the unique title in the form of a brand new announcement for DLC. The additions to the game include the McLaren 570S Car Pack available tonight during The Game Awards.
A commercial break takes place in which PlayStation reminds us of their heavy exclusive lineup including Marvel’s Spider-Man, Days Gone, third party titles like Black Ops 4, and more. Nintendo also showed a commercial break featuring Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with throwbacks to Street Fighter as well as gameplay footage with beloved characters being shown. The game’s release is just hours away we are reminded! December 7, 2018 it becomes available.
One of the most interesting looking films coming soon (Alita: Battle Angel) is given a trailer spot as well with live action and animated graphics combined. Alita: Battle Angel’s star next took the stage to discuss delivering powerful performances in video games. The Best Performance nominees were the star of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Bryan Dechart of Detroit: Become Human, Christopher Judge from God of War, Yuri of Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Roger Clark of Red Dead Redemption 2. Roger Clark of RDR2 won the award for his portrayal of Arthur Morgan in the western outlaw tale. He took the stage to thank the world for his award, discuss how incredible the game industry has become, and thanked his wife for being supportive through the 5 years of his time spent making the game with Rockstar Games.
Next, John Sebastian took stage to talk about Far Cry. The latest game in the series ended with nukes dropping on Montana which has led to the first ever apocalyptic Far Cry game, Far Cry: New Dawn, which had its own World Premiere trailer shown featuring the explosively different style put forward by Ubisoft. The bombs dropping were supposed to be the end of everything, but for some it was just the beginning. A new reality was possible for the outlaw elements of the world who thrive rather than survive in such times. Two villains are revealed with a gameplay sizzle reel showing driving while shooting, with a dog riding shotty, unique weapons, zip-lines, destruction derbies, and more. Far Cry: New Dawn releases February 15, 2018.
Another World Premiere immediately followed this showing for the first time (from Supergiant Games) a hellish animation introducing HADES. Gameplay is shown for the game which features elemental upgrades, isometric battles, and a labyrinth from which there is no escape (even in death). Death is your only family. One of the original designers of Assassin’s Creed took the stage next, Patrice Desilets, and spoke about Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey a single player game set in Africa with open world, survival elements. The game features players taking the roles of all variations of apes, humans, and their various evolved forms leading up to Lucy one of the first near-humans. Panache Digital Games and Private Division workeed together to make the game which takes place 10 million years ago and beyond as humans make their long evolutionary track towards what we are today. Hunting, surviving, family, animal instincts, learning to work as a group, it all happened gradually. This game seeks to explore that when it releases in 2019.
A commercial break for Forza Horizon 4 aired next showing off vast vistas and break-neck speeds on winding hairpin turns under atmospheric views including the northern lights. A new DLC will release for the game on December 13, 2018. A special video from AMD shows off Ryzen, Radeon, and highlights the various parts of gaming culture that are important to the industry as well as announcing a PC Giveaway at AMDFnaticDay.com. Next, a program called GirlsMadeGames is shown which encourages female game development and sees a competition between girls to produce titles and get their games brought to mainstream. 5,600 girls participate in 52 cities across the globe. Next, a commercial is shown for Magic The Gathering Arena which is available to download for free.
The next World Premiere is shown. Midwinter’s logo is etched out of snow, SpatialOS is given a splash screen, and then we are met with space debris and a space station in which a character awakens frantically. Rushing around with a crew of folks who all jump into pods launching down to an unknown planet. The crew then embarks on a discovery mission. Scavengers is the name of the game which is available for sign-ups at this time.
Josh Holmes took the stage to discuss Midwinter Games in Seattle, Washington which was formed by industry devs who have worked on titles like Halo and Battlefield. Their new game Scavengers features players co-operating to survive but competing to win. Starting in 2019 there will be public play-testing available.
Panic At The Disco lead singer took the stage next to present and after some fumbling and joking around the nominees for Best Score / Music were presented. Celeste, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Ni No Kuni II, Octopath Traveler, and Red Dead Redemption 2. The award itself even got a Spotify sponsorship. The winner of this award was Red Dead Redemption 2. Woody Jackson took the stage to thank his family and Rockstar Games for the opportunity. After getting his shout out from Jonah Hill it is great to see him win this award and The Game Awards Orchestra played out the award by remixing the theme in symphonic matter.
A new podcast is announced with partnership through Dolby Atmos and Spotify called ScorePoints. Best Audio Design Black Ops 4, Forza Horizon 4, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Red Dead Redemption 2 and the winner was RDR2. Best Art Direction nominees AC: Odyssey, God of War, Octopath Traveler, RDR2, and Return of the Obra Dinn. The Winner was Return of the Obra Dinn. Best Mobile Game nominees were Donut County, Florence, Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, and Reigns: Game of Thrones. Florence won that! Best VR / AR Game nominees Astro Bot, Beast Saber, Firewall Zero Hour, Moss, Tetris Effect. The winner was Astro Bot. 49% of votes predict that Ninja will win the Twitch award.
Warframe on Nintendo Switch is given a special look through a gameplay trailer. The trailer features a close look at the evolved systems the game has upgraded over the years as well as characters, combat, and more. Warframe is available now for Nintendo Switch. Square Enix got a trailer for Shadow of the Tomb Raider which received a free trial. A new video about the health damages caused by vaping and the dangers of nicotine to the human body is shown sponsored by Truth.
Terrible scenes are shown highlighting a new collection of horror IP – based content for Dead By Daylight on PC, PS4, and Xbox. Dedicated servers are also announced to be coming to the game by Summer 2019. A new chapter Darkness Among Us is also given the World Premiere treatment.
Casey Hudson of BioWare takes stage next to represent Anthem and mentions that the game is almost done before showing some more of it. The World Premiere trailer focused on the story elements of the game in which humans struggle against monstrous beings using the Javelin technology. The Game Awards Orchestra played a tribute to the upcoming title and then Crash Bandicoot took the stage to give Geoff a question mark crate with a trophy.
The World Premiere of Crash Team Racing Remastered is shown to be the original game ‘revved up to the max’. Beenox will develop the game for Activision on PS4 (and likely other platforms).
The next presenters were the voice actors from God of War and they discuss how large the gaming community has become and reveal the nominees for Content Creator of the Year as Dr. Lupo, Myth, Ninja, Pokimane, and WillyRex. There is hesitation before the announcement, to which Kratos’ voice actor says “Read it, boy!” and the crowd went wild. Ninja took stage as the winner of Content Creator of the Year 2018 thanking his family and expressing how incredible the year has been for the industry. He expressed his passion for bringing joy to those who like to watch him play video games and got a little choked up as he hoped for another great year next year for all content creators.
The Outer Worlds is next revealed by the 20 year plus veterans who originally helped create Fallout. In a World Premiere trailer The Outer Worlds from Obsidian Entertainment is revealed. This is the game which was rumored to be a new Fallout-style RPG recently. The trailer shows Edgewater, a corporate-controlled world settled by mankind but requiring a hero of sorts. The player will have to choose who and how to help in this game of strange and varying creatures, space ships, and more. The Outer Worlds releases in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox, and PC.
Dauntless is next shown in a cinematic trailer leading to a creature battle with swords, magic, and more. The game will come to Epic Games Store as well as PlayStation and Xbox platforms. Jesse Houston took stage to discuss FrostFall, a new addition to the game.
Another Global Gaming Citizen is highlighted from Pakistan. Her passion for video games and computer science has faced particularly rough challenges in the middle-eastern world and now she has founded Pixel Art Academy to help Pakistan game developers be able to bring their ideas to the global market.
A different Nintendo Switch commercial for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate debuts. PlayStation Store got a trailer featuring Black Ops 4 predominantly and the trailer for Magic The Gathering Arena repeated in a quicker play.
A new World Premiere is shown from Hello Games. The title is called “A Hello Games Short” and uses ambient scenes to instill a deep thinking emotion in viewers for a game which appears to be focusing on abstraction with an artistic theme at the core of its premise. The Last Campfire is the title for this new game.
Joel McHale took the stage to announce the nominees for the Best ESports Player of the Year 2018. The nominees were SonicFox, Tokido, Uzi, S1MPLE, and JJonak. Sponsored by HP Omen, the winner was revealed as SonicFox who took stage donning his well known mask to cheers from the audience. He shares a heartfelt story of his friend who had Stage 3 Cancer and how he has donated to the cause and doesn’t play video games only for the fame. He loves to make new friends, bond with the community, and beat people in fighting video games. Shout-outs are given to various gaming community members and he also announces that he is proud to be Gay and gives a shout-out to the Gay and Furry communities.
Next, a World Premiere for PUBG’s winter map was given a funny cinematic trailer. The map is available for PS4 and Xbox in January with test servers live for the winter map now on PC. Dave Curd took the stage to talk about the footprints left by players, new gear, the inspiration of the new content, and even a snowmobile for the game!
Weezer band members took stage next to introduce the composer of Devil May Cry 5 with Casey Edwards featuring Ali Edwards performing Devil Trigger in a pyrotechnics fueled performance.
From the creators of Ark: Survival Evolved a new title is revealed on the open sea with magic, mythology, dragons, pirates, dungeons, and more all combined into a new open world exploration and adventure game filled with action. Atlas is a survival MMO from Wildcard Studios coming next week and features 40,000 players in each environment who form an empire and dominate the globe together. The game is 1,200x the size of a single Ark server and features various biomes filled with creative creatures as well as original monsters guarding mysterious secrets. Atlas is confirmed for PC but also comes to Xbox through the Xbox Preview Program next year.
An indie game sizzle reel is shown during a break from the show in which some old and new titles alike are given a chance to take the attention of players. All of the games shown are then followed by a premiere for Ashen which even features gameplay. Epic Games Store is home to all of the games which were shown. Xbox gets a Crackdown 3 commercial which features Terry Crews arguing with his video game self until he is dressed to kill. The title launches February 15, 2019 and is available day one with Xbox Game Pass.
A special commercial is shown for The Elder Scrolls Online featuring some of its most famous players including actors, an MMA fighter, as well as Geoff Keighley’s own brother!
The nominees for Best Debut Indie Game were Donut County, Florence, Moss, The Messenger, and Yoku’s Island Express. The award was won by The Messenger. Best Fighting Game nominees included BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Dragon Ball FighterZ, SoulCalibur VI, and Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. The award went to Dragon Ball FighterZ. The Best Family Game nominees were Mario Tennis Aces, Nintendo Labo, Overcooked 2, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, and Super Mario Party (clearly showing Nintendo’s dominance on the category) to which the winner was Overcooked 2. Best Strategy Game nominees were The Banner Saga 3, Battletech, Frostpunk, Into the Breach, and Valkyria Chronicles 4. The winner was Into the Breach by Subset Games.
Yet another World Premiere Game Announcement took place and this time from BioWare. The game is given a hash tag #TheDreadWolfRises and we are shown very little about it but it becomes evident by the imagery used in the clip that this is a Dragon Age game.
Ninja takes stage and has a good amount of jokes with Pepe the King Prawn. The pair presented the award for Best Independent Game. The nominees for Best Independent Game 2018 were Celeste, Dead Cells, Into the Breach, Return of the Obra Dinn, and The Messenger. The winner of the award was Celeste which also won this year’s Games For Impact award.
The majority of the team behind the title (Matt Makes Games) took stage and thanked those from the team who couldn’t come to the show tonight. The family and friends of the developers are thanked and they express how lost they were in making the game, never expecting that so many people would end up loving to play it upon release. The title has also helped people with mental illness to which the team says it came from within the person not only the game, and that mental illness patients should be confident that they can achieve anything.
From the creators of Abzu we are shown Giant Squid’s next title which features a fast running bow expert who rides a bird and does battle with mystical creatures of all types. The Pathless is the name of this new game which will launch in 2019 for PlayStation 4 as well as Epic Games Store. Geoff reminds us that special offers and discounts will be available for all nominated games, and that The Game Awards is #1 top trending on Twitter as the show goes on.
Published by Digital Extremes (makers of Warframe), and developed by HumanHead Studios, Survived By is available as the show takes place on Steam Early Access. The world premiere shows the dark side which has taken control of the pixel art inspired world which provides roguelike action for knights around the world. Elaine Chase took stage to announce the new ESports and competitive program for Magic The Gathering which has over 10 million USD of prizes kicking off first at PAX East in Boston, MA, USA. Next, Red Dead Redemption 2 which won many awards tonight had a Medley Symphonic Performance from Grammy Award Winners Daniel Manwa and his band featuring Rhiannon Giddens capturing the vibe transporting us to the America of 1899.
Hawkins, Indiana is once again called upon as the Netflix series Stranger Things is announced to be getting a new video game. The creators of the film series took stage to discuss Netflix and how incredible this year of video games has been. Stranger Things will have its own video game on Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch which follows the events of the third season. A World Premiere trailer was shown for the pixel art title with roguelike elements. The title is called Stranger Things 3: The Game and upgrades from its mobile title into a 16-bit inspired format.
Ed Boon took stage next to present the award for Best Sports / Racing Game… Just kidding, NetherRealm Studios logo, Mortal Kombat logo, electric arcs everywhere, and a bunch of skeleton stone monks are seen until Scorpion and Raiden take the screen to battle with 21 Savage music in the background. The cinematic action inspired by gameplay shows destructive moves, bone breaking, blood, gore, and the never ending battle between good and evil. Scorpion disembowels Raiden, Cuts his head off, kicks it in the air, and then hooks it, yelling the infamous “Get Over Here!” catchphrase. Mortal Kombat 11 will release April 23, 2019 with a community reveal January 17, 2019. As you may remember, DJ Killzown Jones was the first to break the story of MK11 Konfirmed back at Mo Game Con and RealGamerNewZ helped get the word out to the world.
Best Sports / Racing Game was awarded to Forza Horizon 4. Aaron Greenberg took stage to accept the award on the behalf of Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios as well as announcing that the title has been the best selling Xbox One game and a huge Xbox Game Pass sales maker. Fortune Island is coming as a DLC package on December 13, 2018.
Double Fine Productions gets a new trailer for Psychonauts 2, an adventurous title in which a 10 year old prodigy becomes part of the world’s most advanced psychic spy agency. Warning that some minds should never be read, some vaults should never be known, and that some secrets should never be told, the narrator mixes charming with chilling. More info is available about the game at FIG.CO/PSY2 and Psychonauts 2 will release 2019.
Phil Spencer took the stage next and spoke about the X018 Event as well as the state of the Xbox brand overall. ID@Xbox, Xbox Game Preview, Xbox Game Pass, etc. are all discussed including Ashen and Mutant Year Zero as part of the Winter of Arcade 2018. Crackdown 3, Gears 5, and the sequel to Ori are also highlighted as special projects to look forward to on Xbox in 2019. Devil May Cry 5 Beta and Demo will launch on Xbox One tomorrow December 7, 2018 as a temporary exclusive first look at the title, only on Xbox. A Devil May Cry 5 trailer is shown next, we have also included an extended trailer below it which was released by Capcom as a taste of the upcoming game tonight.
Lual Mayan is highlighted as the next Global Gaming Citizen who actually was a refugee until his mother got him a computer and made it possible for him to become one of the few Sudan video game developers. He taught himself gaming, programming, and made a game all about peace in a community all about war. His game is being played by people all throughout his community and he looks forward to presenting titles to the world to help make a difference in the attitudes of peace rather than war.
A new commercial for Just Cause 4 is shown. The game is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A special PUBG trailer made in live action featuring frying pans, machine guns, corn fields, and more. The game is now available on PS4 after previously being a PC and Xbox exclusive. Now, a commercial which blends ever evolving games together makes the case for the PlayStation Classic.
The Composer of Celeste took stage next to present the award for Best Game Direction. The nominees were A Way Out, Detroit: Become Human, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Red Dead Redemption 2. The winner is God of War which also won Best Action / Adventure game, and was directed by Cory Barlog at Sony Santa Monica Studio. The directors of Infinity War from Marvel, the Russo brothers, took the stage next to present the award for Best Ongoing Game. The new category was created for titles that get better and better over time. The brothers joke that 10 games were originally nominated until the Thanos effect occurred and half were eliminated (presumably for the greater good). The nominees were Destiny 2 Forsaken, Fortnite, No Man’s Sky, Overwatch, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. Fortnite won the award, and is also the winner for Best Multiplayer Game. Donald Mustard took stage to represent Epic Games and expressed how many people are working so hard on the experimenting and quality development being done to bring joy to the players of Fortnite all around the world. He discussed the fact that the industry is a new medium and that the gaming community is like one big team pushing the medium forward. He encouraged unity between all game creators and gamers.
Suddenly Geoff was interrupted by a black screen which shows Joker from Persona. The Phantom Thieves of Heart apparently have been invited to The Game Awards to announce their presence in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate! Persona will be represented by Joker of Persona 5 in the Nintendo Switch exclusive Challenger Pack 1 for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Reggie of Nintendo took the stage to discuss the game as well as the brand new announcement. He announces that the title is the biggest crossover in video games and perhaps in all of entertainment. Fans will even get the ability to summon a Persona into the game. The character comes with a stage as well as music. The theme for the DLC packs are to surprise fans with unexpected cross-overs rather than going with safe bets. The full game becomes available tonight at midnight on Nintendo Switch. The Game Awards Orchestra performed the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate theme song with much flare while highlights from the title are shown on-stage.

The presenter for Game of the Year 2018 is the team who won last year. The Vice President of Blizzard Entertainment Jeff Kaplin took the stage to discuss how special it was for Overwatch to win the award last year. Next, he lent the stage to The Game Awards Orchestra who celebrated every nominee with special numbers including Celeste, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Monster Hunter World, God of War, Monster Hunter World, and Red Dead Redemption 2. The winner for Game of the Year 2018 is God of War.
A large representation of the Sony Santa Monica Studio took stage for the win as Shannon Studstill (VP Product Development SIE / Santa Monica) discussed the incredible work of Cory Barlog and Yumi Yang in partnership with the entire team. The win was unexpected but the team did have a lot of thanks to their families, the industry, Scott Rohde, Shuhei Yoshida, Shawn Layden, Cory Barlog asked the audience to go crazy for all of the nominated games stating that every single game nominated for GOTY was a masterpiece this year. The Game Awards Orchestra played out the event and next year’s event was given a light confirmation as well.
