“Bayonetta 2 Would Not Exist Without Nintendo” According to Platinum Games

B2

Bayonetta 2 is coming to Wii U exclusively, and many fans are not happy. The first Bayonetta released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 back in 2010 and while it garnered critical acclaim and developed a fanbase, it didn’t sell well enough for then Publisher Sega to continue funding the sequel. It is now making its way to Nintendo’s newest console only, though many are still clinging to the hope that it will see a release on other platforms. JP Kellams, creative producer for developer Platinum Games spoke addressed this situation.

Kellams spoke about the difference with the Japanese gaming industry and how Bayonetta 2 would not be available on other platforms due it being saved by Nintendo, during a presentation at the University of Central Florida’s Center for Emerging Media.

When asked how Platinum Games hoped to keep Bayonetta’s fanbase, after jumping platforms and going exclusive. JP had this to say:

“Without getting into some stuff that is both business and confidential, the simple question I’d like to ask you is, ‘Do you want to play Bayonetta 2?’ Bayonetta 2 would not exist without Nintendo white knighting that project. So while I totally understand that people want to play it on the platforms that they’ve played it on previously, we really wanted to make Bayonetta 2.”

She’s back and like it or not, it’s all thanks to Nintendo.

Kellams also added:

“We really wanted to make Bayonetta 2. And Bayonetta 2 is a project that we were passionate about. And when we couldn’t… when the business situation changed and we couldn’t make it the way that we were originally planning on making it, we definitely wanted to make sure that our project survived. I’ve seen Bayonetta 2 – I look at it every single day of my life when I’m in the office. It’s really cool and the world is going to be a better place because Bayonetta 2 is in it.”

I for one, am glad that Bayonetta 2 is a reality. I will admit to wanting to grab a pitchfork after learning of its exclusivity, since I had no interest in Nintendo’s console. In some ways I still don’t, but I loved the first Bayonetta; it’s one of my favorite action games. Based on the footage and details given thus far, the sequel is shaping up to be even better than the original. I will most likely buy a Wii U at some point to play it. I’m sure there will be other games worth playing on it.

Hopefully others will develop the same mindset, or at least quit being so angry and hateful towards the developers. They put a lot of hard work into Bayonetta 2, it’s great that they get to finish it. Many franchises don’t always get a second chance, if you really are a fan, be thankful that this did.
