When it first released, Tomb Raider did not originally sell enough copies that Square Enix had hoped to get sold. There was a lot of money invested into this title, and it finally became profitable recently after being a loss up until this point. Square Enix plans on making a sequel for Tomb Raider in the near future; they are going to use the same engine that was built for this new Tomb Raider, hopefully saving money and pulling in some good sales this time around without the need to invest in another engine.
The developers at Crystal Dynamics have wanted to create an improved version of Tomb Raider and port it to PS4 and Xbox ONE for a while now and that could also help bring in some money to recoup the losses of the highly praised reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise. It will be the same game, except it will have improved graphics and animations. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will be available for purchase on the PS4 and Xbox ONE January 28, 2014 in North America, but not until January 31, 2014 in Europe.
