Microsoft Studios and Team Dakota have begun sending out Beta invites to Windows 8.1 gamers who signed up at their Official Beta Sign Up Website. For those who are unaware, Project Spark is a user-friendly way for players to create their own worlds, artificial intelligence behavior scripts, and other gameplay elements together with a large online community then enjoy those experiences together.
This system is designed specifically for ease-of-use and to posses the capability for creating compelling gameplay. The entire game is planned for release on Xbox ONE next-generation gaming console at some point in 2014 and will also see an Xbox 360 installation.
For now, the Beta is a Windows 8.1 exclusive and the retail version will not release for Windows 7. Some may remember that the essence for many of Project Spark’s design philosophies are inherited from Microsoft’s “Kodu Game Lab” which sought to make a game design platform like Project Spark’s that was easy enough for a child to use and fun enough for all ages to play the gameplay that resulted from that creative process.
Kodu released on Xbox 360 and Windows PC in June of 2009 and is typically considered a middleware whereas Project Spark is more of a full-fledged video game experience reworking the entire concept from the ground up and adding for the first time a new Crossroads mode which aims to blend creation with playing across the populated online world of Xbox Live.
