Director Neill Blomkamp was the director from Hollywood set to bring the Halo franchise to life as a full feature film until investment firms Universal and Fox dropped their support. Having that happen to him, Blomkamp claims to have now accepted this event in his life as a good thing. With similar narrative devices such as an alien race being used in District 9 and a Halo-like planetary extension being used in the upcoming Elsyium film he’s directing, Blomkamp essentially is saying he would have never been able to do things his own way if he’d stuck with the Halo project. For better or worse, the director is seemingly happy with the way things turned out.
If you haven’t heard yet, Elsyium is going to be hitting theaters August 9, 2013 and despite some critical skepticism about the storyline used in District 9, most film goers seem to enjoy Blomkamp’s films. Time will tell if he can continue to repeat the success of the “this was going to be the Halo movie, but now it’s not” box office opening that District 9 saw. Until then, we will continue to keep our eyes open as this one is shaping up to have some interesting sci-fi plot themes including the evolution of society and the negative effects that may come with that evolution.
