BattleBlock Theater Review

Foreword: Before I get into the review, let me say that we will also have a special Co-Op Review coming soon that especially covers the multiplayer aspects of the BattleBlock Theater experience on Xbox 360.

BattleBlock Theater was developed at The Behemoth by the creators of Castle Crashers and Alien Hominid.  It has been in development for the past 3 years and was just recently released on April 3rd. If you want to buy this game, it will cost you just 1200 MSP or 15 USD on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

First, let’s get into the story. When you first play the game, there is about 5-10 minutes of some background story. You are on a ship with many others when you crash onto an island. There you’re taken prisoner by evil cats. The cats force you to work these obstacle courses for their own entertainment. Your job is essentially to escape, which you can only do by completing all the levels. I know the story may sound cheesy, but you don’t really need to pay attention to the story, as there is not much of a story. This game is more of an action/puzzle game, not a story game. It is fun to keep up with the story as you might start to care about the other prisoners, and want to escape. Fun Factor and Gameplay are the focus of BattleBlock Theater. Overall the story is just, silly. It’s childish but still fun and enjoyable.

The gameplay is unique and very interesting. The main part of the game is jumping through each obstacle course, or levels. There are 10 levels in a chapter, and 8 chapters in the game. But the 10th level of each chapter is sort of like a boss level. It’s significantly harder than the others and is timed. Every 3 levels the game auto saves and brings you back to the main menu, where you can visit the gift shop and unlock more prisoners and weapons or just continue playing. Each chapter gets slightly more difficult so early on in the game is easy, but later on it gets harder noting a decent pace like most games should.

BattleBlock Theater Review

Trying to play this game for the first time, might be difficult for some people as the tutorial sucks. It only teaches basica moves like how to jump and punch, so you pretty much have to learn everything by yourself. Don’t get me wrong the game is easy to play and learn, but if you’re a slow learner you might have trouble enjoying this game.

The objective of the game is to navigate through each level and collect at least 3 gems to unlock the exit. There easy to find and easy to get. You have to get at least 3, but some levels have up to 10. Also in each level is a ball of yarn. You want to collect these as you can trade them in for weapons  at the gift shop. You use gems to buy prisoners and yarn balls to buy weapons. You don’t have to buy any prisoners the entire game but it’s just fun to collect them. On the other hand you will need to buy weapons.

To progress through the game you will need them because the enemies become to strong to just punch. The enemies very through out the game. Usually you will come across straight up cats that will attack you, and the only way to kill them is drown them or shock them. But some enemies get more difficult to kill, and they start to get weapons. It is almost impossible to kill them without weapons.

BattleBlock Theater Review 2

This game has great replay availability. There are two difficulties normal and hard mode, and there are achievements to beat missions on hard mode so you can replay the game if you are a achievement hunter. Even if you don’t care about the achievements you still will want to just hop on the game every once in a while and play a couple of levels. The game is just fun like that.

Final Verdict: Overall, I highly recommend this game to anybody of all ages. The game is simply enjoyable. It’s how a games should be. Considering how much fun will you have with this game, 15 bucks is a great deal. Some games will run you 60 and only give you 8 hours of gameplay. I easily already have 15 in this game and plan to play more. RealGamerNewz awards this game a solid 9.5 out of 10 and rates it as a Platinum Game in the RGN Ratings system. You can’t go wrong with BattleBlock Theater. The only reason that I didn’t give this game a perfect score is because it is really meant to be played in co-op, and some people just don’t have any friends to play it with. This game is absolutely flawless. No glitches, no ‘BS’, no problems, just all fun.
