With much talk about resolution leading up to and during a game’s release, 720P, 1080P, 30 frames per second, and 60 frames per second have become well known buzz-words, or household names if you will, for describing the approximate or sometimes exact quality level of a game’s visual performance. While the resolution being scaled up to 720P or 1080P by the console, natively drawn / rendered at those levels by the game engine itself, represents how large of an image will be displayed (pixel depth) it still takes a great development team to bring more detail into that larger space.
That being said, 30 vs 60 frames per second is a simple issue of performance and effects the tactile feel of playing a video game, particularly if frame rates are stuttery. Depending on the game engine, higher or lower frame rates may be required for optimal enjoyment. Some games have been notably hard to play or even unplayable for having frame rates drop between the 15 – 25 range too many times. Fallout: New Vegas on Xbox 360 for example maintained 28 – 30 frames per second at almost all times while on PlayStation 3 suffered frame drops to 22 frames per second frequently. This did not break the game, and it was still playable and enjoyed by many but has caused it to age poorly on the PS3 and Bethesda may have wanted to ease some fears with this new announcement.

While 30 frames per second locked, or a varying 29 – 45 frames with smooth performance can often provide a playable experience, many desire 60 frames per second since on most game engines it will provide a significant improvement on input lag, latency, render delays, and more. This requires more power, and so many games coming out last-gen on PlayStation 3 such as The Last Of Us have come to the PlayStation 4 generation of hardware with an upgrade to 60 frames per second.
Fallout 4 was confirmed by Bethesda to be running at a locked 30 frames per second on PlayStation 4 and Xbox ONE with resolution set up to 1080P HD. On the Windows PC platform the development studio says they will not do anything to hold back performance, so those with mid-high end Gaming PCs should be able to find out exactly what this long-awaited game and its engine are made of when they put it to the test November 10, 2015.
