With the success of The Walking Dead episodic gaming experience Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida brings it to consideration that many other PlayStation titles could benefit from sometimes having episodic content. Imagine being able to download a smaller title in between large releases.
This business model seems to work great for standalone DLC coming out these days such as “Episodes from Liberty City” the Grand Theft Auto IV DLC that you can buy and play without owning the original game. Other examples include inFamous Festival of Blood and Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty.
The cheaper price-point for a smaller game is an accepted tradeoff for gamers that are waiting for the next full release from their favorite franchise or just don’t have enough cash to grab it yet. It can also serve as a great way to draw in people who ordinarily may not have chanced it with a full price game. Once they play the cheaper episodic content that can drive them to pick up the full titles.
Yoshida had this to say in interview:
“Episodic has been talked about for a long time and most people are skeptical until [they] play The Walking Dead. Now we are big fans of episodic gaming. We’re believers now,” he told Polygon.
“Hats off to [the] Telltale guys, they proved it works. I’d be happy to see some of our games adopt that model in the future.”
