First Steam Box Priced at $1,000, Releasing X-Mas, Pre-Orders Open

Although it is now becoming clear that the “Steam Box” will likely not be one console but instead a PC-based platform supported by many third party hardware manufacturers vying for space alongside your next-gen consoles as well as support from Valve and the Steam “Big Picture” functionality. Xi3 Corporation created the first Steambox which is a micro-sized, modular upgrade-able machine otherwise known as “The Piston”.

Valve will release its own official Steambox devices as well in the near future and developers will have these in their hands very soon to begin coding specifically for (though it is expected you will be able to play ALL your pre-existing Steam library there as well). This Steambox device is priced at $999.99 and will release this December around Christmas time. Pre-orders are now open. The specs are as follows:

  • 3.2GHz AMD Quad-Core A10
  • 8GB RAM
  • 128GB Solid-State Hard Drive
  • Linux Operating System
  • Official Steam Support from Valve

Click here to pre-order now. If you pre-order before 11:59 p.m. CST, Sunday, March 17, 2013 you will even get $100 off the $1,000 price tag.
