Nippon Ichi Spotlight: Happy Birthdays has come to the Switch

Nippon Ichi Software, the developer/publisher behind many hit titles such as the long running strategy series Disgaea, the visual novel-adventure series Danganronpa and some of the newer entries in long-running bullet hell shoot-em-up series Touhou Project have Switched their focus to the ever-popular Nintendo handheld (couldn’t resist the joke).

To extend their already growing Switch library which includes Disgaea 5 (my personal favorite in the series), shooter-fighter hybrid Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle, isometric brawler Penny Punching Princess, the RPG adventure title The Longest Five Minutes and action RPG Fallen Legion: Rise to Glory among others, NIS America has even more coming down the pipeline for the Nintendo Switch fans out there with three new RPGs, Touhou Genso Wanderer Reloaded (releasing June 17th, 2018), Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA (releasing June 26, 2018) and Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk (Fall 2018, date TBD).

There’s also fighting title SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy based on the characters from SNK (releasing September 7th, 2018), the survival horror title Yomawari: Long Night Collection which is a compilation of both titles in the Yomawari series all in one bundle (releasing October 30th, 2018), a definitive edition of the original Disgaea title releasing as well in Fall 2018 with no set release date and a compilation of SNK arcade hits in SNK 40th Anniversary (TBA 2018).

However, the title that has my most attention is their most recent release. This game being the god game/sandbox title Happy Birthdays, which released June 5th on the Nintendo eShop with a physical version also available. Happy Birthdays, a port of the 2017 PS4 and Steam title Birthdays: The Beginning is a fresh take on sandbox games where you are in charge of your own planet, shaping its appearance and climate- whilst balancing the needs of the various animals that will inhabit your planet, created by the legendary Yashuhiro Wada of Harvest Moon fame.

With full control over how your planet looks and feels, you will see various types of animals and watch your planet evolve along with its inhabitants. Featuring miniature mice, destructive dinosaurs, mischievous monkeys, bashful bears and wile wolves among many other creatures, you can create your own ideal world and run it how you want it and with the portability of the Nintendo Switch, you can shape your planet from wherever you want, whether it be the comfort of your home or on the go- making Happy Birthdays the ultimate title for running your own world at your own pace. For fans of god games such as Spore, ActRaiser, Populous or the Black & White series- I urge you to take a look at this game, especially since NIS launched the title on the eShop with a free demo of the game.
