Today Square Enix tempered expectations before their E3 Press Conference tomorrow at 10AM Pacific Time by revealing the release date of Kingdom Hearts III. One of the longest waits in gaming history is soon coming to an end thanks to the Unreal Engine 4 development path Square Enix has chosen for their current lineup of games. Originally announced at E3 2013, but in pre-development since as early as 2006, KH3 has undergone a number of iterations and so much money, hard work, and love has been poured into the project that it’s surreal to think fans will soon get their hands on it.
Disney and Square Enix first teamed up in 2002 with the release of the original Kingdom Hearts for PlayStation 2 in which characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck received a much more mature but still pleasant envisioning. The role playing game series combines action adventure elements with traditional Square Enix art design and the resulting product is an international blockbuster of the gaming industry. Even gamers who were too old to be caring about Mickey Mouse suddenly found themselves enamored by the Disney world all over again as the RPG gameplay and story of the key-blade hero took the world by storm.
With the unfortunate situation of Square Enix in-house game engines sidetracking the company, although they were incredible game engines, the team behind Kingdom Hearts III has been able to finally approach the finish line for this new installment of the popular hybrid series by switching focus over to the well documented and highly intuitive development environment offered by Unreal Engine 4. The final game will no doubt use a heavily customized version of the game engine, as Square Enix will tweak things to their liking to produce visuals on par or perhaps even beyond Final Fantasy XV. The many teasers we have witnessed of KH3 up to this point certainly provide an insight into a world of incredible artistic integrity with a similar combat system to FFXV, but with that KH spin put on it. Fans are also excited in terms of the types of worlds that will be in the game including new worlds like Toy Story, Monsters Inc., and more.
