Alan Wake Available on Steam for PC

Former Xbox 360 exclusive Alan Wake has just become available for PC via Steam. Check out the excerpt below from the official press release:

“Remedy Entertainment Ltd. is excited to announce that Alan Wake has finally made its way home and is available now for PC through Steam.

The PC version includes the original game along with the two pieces of downloadable content (The Signal and The Writer) and everything you’d expect from a PC version and more.”

Australia Finally Gets R18+ Rating

Australian gamers have long since battled for this day to come and it is finally here. Today the Australian government announced the R18+ rating will be approved for the video game industry. For those that don’t know, the R18+ rating is the equivalent to an M rated game in America. This is regarded as a game for adults, and when purchased usually a form of ID is presented or a parent/guardian’s consent is requested otherwise the purchase is turned down to minors.

In Australia they haven’t had such a rating and instead games have been modified to culturally match a younger crowd. If this type of dumbing down of violence, blood, gore, etc. wasn’t effective enough to classify the game in the 15+ rating, the game would likely be banned from release.

Now that Australia has the R18+ rating system for available for game publishers to utilize, we should see a little less censoring of games and a little more parental awareness about the various different types of games and appropriate age groups.

“The amendments to the Classification Act 1995 and Broadcasting Services Act 1992 are expected to come into effect by January of next year.

The average age of gamers is 32 with women making up 47 per cent of Australian gamers.

The demand for an R18+ video game rating has been overwhelming.

The Attorney-General’s department received 58, 437 submissions in response to a discussion paper released last year, 98 per cent of which supported the introduction of an R 18 category.”

Every book on the ground in Skyrim is now part of a real E-Reader book collection

The books found on the ground in the Elder Scrolls series are known by fans to be an immersive set of lore interactions. Though the mechanic of reading books in a video game might not be popular among today’s gaming audience it is still practiced as a storytelling technique that can even provide a chill to the gamer under the right circumstances.

It could even be argued that this format holds immersion better than having certain things explained to you by a narrator or character within the game. The elegant solution is that you are still your character holding a book while the cold wind blows around you and your journey awaits your blood-stained sword.

Apparently the cult following that supports this type of lore reading in Skyrim has grown quite strong and now Capane.us has gone so far as to add the Skyrim books to the E-Readers: Kindle, Nook, iOS, etc. You can download it for free on their website at the time of this original post.

Modern Warfare 3 Gets Hacked on Xbox Live, What Else is New?

As we all know most Call of Duty titles have been giant hack lands for hackers. Every iteration of the game has arrived at our doorstep with promises from the developers that this time things would be better. Black Ops saw a small window of time before it resembled Modern Warfare 2 in terms of campers and exploits. Now we have Modern Warfare 3, the game that just released in the Call of Duty series, finally hacked.

It took less than a month. You can now find infected lobbies in the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 according to a new post at MP1st.com. It is unclear if this effects the PlayStation 3 or the PC versions of the game but it is this author’s opinion that it probably effects all of them and is just worse on the Xbox 360 due to the fanbase being more into game-breaking exploits. If you were on the fence about picking up this game and worried about the multiplayer, this may be an indicator that you should just wait until Call of Duty 27 before hopping back in on the franchise.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on PS3 #1 in Japan

Weekly sales numbers being discussed over at Gamasutra include the new entry to the Call of Duty series, however this entry paints a well-known picture of the industry’s differences from continent to continent.

While the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty is the highest selling in the United States, Modern Warfare 3 ranked in with over 210,000 units sold in Japan and the large majority of it was on the Playstation 3. The Xbox 360 version ranks in at 7th place in the Japan sales.

This story originally floated up from a NeoGAF forum referring to data from Media Create. Typically you should probably take numbers like this with a grain of salt, but in many cases there are some who swear by them for indications in trending market movement.

Starhawk EULA Updated: Gameplay Videos Sanctioned Officially (Again)

Starhawk’s EULA agreement has been updated with the recent 1.0.3 update to the Starhawk Private Beta reminding testers that they are not only allowed, but also encouraged to record their gameplay, discuss their opinions on the game, give feedback on balance, points, gameplay mechanics, or just get the word out there overall.

This is a great chance for Starhawk to become seen by a larger mainstream audience than predecessor Warhawk was able to capture the attention of. While Warhawk lived on to become an icon in multiplayer gaming for those who stuck with it, many were turned away by the game’s steep learning curve and overall domination over new players before the implementation of ‘noob servers’ a.k.a. Rookie servers.

Most beta tests will have their testers agreeing to an NDA or Non-Disclosure Agreement clause in their EULA that would discourage any gameplay recording or even critical discussion of the game in the general public media. Starhawk’s developers at Lightbox have decided to take a more open approach to feedback and footage distribution and seemingly opened the floodgates!

If you have yourself a way in to the Starhawk beta and have been wanting to record gameplay videos, you’re in the clear!

Assassin’s Creed Revelations: Ancestors DLC Announced… Already

Have you picked up your copy of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations yet? No? Okay. Well, there’s already DLC being announced for it. So hopefully you can raise some extra money above and beyond the retail price if you’re interested. The DLC package is being released for a modest $3.99 (320 MS Points) on PSN and Xbox Live Marketplace with 4 new characters for the multiplayer mode.

You’ll catch a few new characters for multiplayer mode… and… well that’s pretty much it unless you count their weapons, assassinations, and ’emotes’ as extra content. This DLC pack will release December 13, 2011 shamelessly less than 30 days after the release of the game itself. I’m sure it’s not already on the disc or anything, like 9% sure.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Cheaters Will Be Banned Soon

Robert Bowling has announced via public forum that Modern Warfare 3 players who find themselves cheating, glitching, exploiting, and most of all “boosting” will be subject to being banned from the game soon. The first round of what could be a never ending wave of player bans is said to be rolling out in the near future. As for how exactly they planned to stop cheaters in the first place, this is where things get interesting.

Whereas we were told in the past that Treyarch was able to learn from Modern Warfare 2’s mistakes meaning that Black Ops wouldn’t have the same exploit problems. The Modern Warfare 3 team have painted an entirely different picture as to their approach to the problem. In fact they are relying on banning rather than coding away the exploits, or so their public statements would lead us to believe.

The attitude that you can’t ever stop hackers and cheaters, only hope to control them, is a very logic-based approach with widespread support. We had just hoped that possibly this conversation of cheaters and hackers numbering in the thousands and millions would have been over 3 or 4 CODs ago.

Steam Has Been Hacked: Credit Card Info and More

Worldwide industry source GamaSutra reports that Steam has been hacked via an announcement made by Gabe Newell directly. While the cause of this breach and the exact amount of effected accounts remains unseen, it is confirmed that Credit Card information (and more) has been compromised. Steam makes up a huge segment of the PC Gaming market and is a newfound mecca of gamers across the globe.

Here are the official statements:

“Valve’s games-on-demand Steam service has been hacked, the company said Thursday, saying that a database containing private user information has been stolen.

That information includes user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information, according to an email sent by Valve managing director Gabe Newell to Gamasutra.”
