Rumor: Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 in November (Or is it Iron Wolf?)

More rumors must be discussed as reports have come in that a retailer has listed Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (first broke by HipHopGamer of HipHopGamerShow.com) in their pre-order section. This could be a case of the retailer in question jumping the gun on displaying this year’s COD release (which has already been announced by Activision but with basically no details given officially at the time of this post), or it could be an error on the retailer’s part.

Judge for yourself, however there has also been heavy rumors about this year’s game being named Call of Duty: Iron Wolf. This could be a fan fiction that rumor mills are being hopeful with or it’s the real deal. Supposedly people have been spotted playing it on Xbox Live already. But as always, time will tell the truth to these rumors.

Z2Live Acquires Vancouver Studio Big Sandwich Games

Will we see a revival of this formula that has worked so well on the PC? Micro-transactions in place of monthly fees and expansions instead of downloadable content packs and updates. If this acquirement can lead to further competition in the free-to-play indie market then we may find out.

Today Z2Live has announced to the press that they have acquired Big Sandwich Games. Together these game development figures are likely to bring more high quality games to the scene.

“Big Sandwich Games clearly executes at a level that meets our bar for quality,” said Lou Fasulo, COO at Z2Live. “The acquisition represents a key part of our long term strategy to build, operate and scale genre defining games.”

Best known for Battle Nations, Z2Live is a strong proponent of Free-to-Play and has reached a playerbase of over 25 million worldwide. With fully loaded, indie Vancouver studio Big Sandwich Games in their arsenal and are likely to be cranking out plenty of gaming goodness soon.

Borderlands 2 Doomsday Trailer + Release Date

2K Games brings forward a release date for the already highly anticipated sequel to 2009’s RPG/FPS mash-up. In this genre-blending series gamers have cherished the drop-in/drop-out online co-operative fundamentals of Borderlands. The community also had a high interest in extending that experience with more and more DLC packs. With Borderlands 2 Borderlands is promising more of that, but also the potential for an “all new experience”.

You can pre-order Borderlands 2 at the merchant of your choice. The game will release September 18, 2012.

“Borderlands 2 is a passion project, through and through,” said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. “The result is a sequel that has improved every successful aspect of Borderlands while innovating with an all-new experience.”

“The addictive gameplay and shooting and looting mayhem of the first Borderlands is back and better than ever in Borderlands 2, taking the franchise to an entirely new level,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “With more guns, more enemies, more missions, an engaging story and all-new characters, Borderlands 2 promises to bring a new era to gaming this fall.”

Rumor: Xbox ‘Live TV’ Project Cancelled

XBOX LIVE TV

You may or may not have heard about the project currently known as Live TV to the gaming community. This feature was announced at the Microsoft E3 2011 Press Conference and according to ongoing reports was originally planned to resemble something beyond the Netflix/Hulu setup to compete with something even more sophisticated – offerings we see from cable providers.

All of this was in the process of being added to Xbox Live with most speculation and rumor hinting at an eventual increased cost for higher-grade membership of Xbox Live that would allow access. In other words, if you want to watch – you would have to upgrade your account and pay extra  at some point for a higher status (Diamond was a nickname among speculators), if not then you would presumably have the option to remain a Gold member.

According to the latest info surrounding this undertaking, which had Microsoft execs talking shop with the likes of HBO to make headlines, the entire project may have been cancelled for the time being. Royalty costs of digital streaming have still been in a transitional stage but we are starting to see owners of digital content value their intellectual properties more than before.

Netflix and Hulu are feeling the crunch and that’s why Netflix has been having to explain itself to customers about increasing fees and decreasing selection while Hulu seemingly planned ahead for this cost increase by leaving advertisements in to help cover content costs. Is it possible this is happening because of an upcoming shift to new hardware – or is does Microsoft believe it’s just too expensive for Xbox Live consumers during the global financial crisis? Only time will tell.

Thanks to VGP via GameGrep for advancements on this ongoing rumor.

Update: As far as we know this shouldn’t have any long-term effects on the YouTube/Bing Voice portions of Live TV.

You Know You Were Thinking It! Part 2

Welcome back to You Know You Were Thinking It! a series from Deon Lofton of RealGamerNewz.com where Deon will be exposing those hidden thoughts that are in the back of every gamer’s mind.

1. Is camping really the future of First Person Shooters? I hope not.

Call of Duty Campers

2. Duke Nukem? Who? Remind me who that is again? (Here’s a video  for those of you who may be a little young for this one.)

3. Ever wonder what’s really on Link’s mind as he is roaming through the forest?…………. It’s probably not what you think (hint, hint).

4. We all have played a game that was very difficult. For me, that game was Final Fantasy 7.  I am still stuck in the factory, 15 years later – talk about difficult.

5. What’s up with these video game system intial startup times? First the beep (on PS3), then the noise of the fan (on Xbox 360), then the logo. I mean, you can practically make a cup of coffee before the system finishes loading – just saying. Here’s to hoping the next generation will be faster!

6. So, who won the battle? Battlefield 3 or Call Of Duty? The numbers speak for themselves.

7. I see Fat Princess is still eating that cake! She can’t get enough.

8. Ok I mentioned him before but, didn’t Dom from the Gears of War series deserve to live? I mean, his wife was tormented by the Locust – woudn’t that be enough? I can see it now, a Gears of War spin- off featuring Dom as the main Character! But it’s probably just wishful thinking on my part, I guess.

9. Who’s really going to win the battle? Street Fighter or Tekken? I Guess we will have to wait and see.

10. Do boobs really help sell a game? I think so. We will probably find out when we see how well Soul Calibur V does.

11. With all the fighting games were seeing this year, one has to wonder, where is Virtua Fighter 6?

12. Speaking of fighting, where is Battle Arena Toshinden? Sophia’s whip will put Ivy under submission.

13. CJ has been away from the scene for a long time. He’s probably hanging  out with his crew underground. He was the best GTA character right up there next to Luis Lopez.

You Know You Were Thinking It!

Rumor: Xbox 8 Has Unreal Engine 4 and Windows 8 in its Arsenal

Mark Rein of Epic Games talked up the Unreal Engine as he announced at the DICE Summit that the soon-to-be-seen Unreal Engine 4 is “Already Running” on products he claimed could not be named at this time. Heavy speculation is pointing to the Next Generation Xbox, called the Xbox 720 by many as the name formed out of necessity and fan-base creativity. New updates on longstanding rumors point out a new potential naming scheme, Xbox 8.

This new development in combination with the notion that Windows 8 will allow gamers to play Xbox 360 (and assumedly ‘Xbox 8’) games on custom-built gaming PC’s paints a very interesting potential for Microsoft’s next-gen. Many critics of their decisions this generation have often called out for Microsoft to become a software entity in the gaming world and license out Xbox Live as a service rather than sell consoles.

This combined strategy of ‘Xbox 8’ and the universal log-in and games library for PC’s and consoles could be something similar to what we are seeing with Sony’s PS3 and Vita. Next Generation could be the generation when gamers reap the rewards from all the intense competition going on between Microsoft and Sony.

ThisIsXbox goes deeper into the details of the ‘Xbox 8’ naming scheme, and further reinforce longstanding rumors of cross-platform services from Microsoft Next Gen across console and PC. Imagine, being able to play Xbox 8 exclusives on your tricked out Windows 8 gaming rig. Even the potential of playing Xbox 360 exclusives across Windows 8 has been heavily mentioned.

Does this mean gaming is going multiplatform from both Microsoft and Sony? Does this mean that Microsoft is bringing Xbox Live to the PC and finally admitting that Games for Windows Live is loathed at best by gamers and always has been? Only time will tell.

For now, take a look at the following excerpt from a recent article at ThisIsXbox:

“Recently we reported that alpha forms of the next-generation Xbox console which could be named “XBOX 8″ – not 8 because it’s the eighth Xbox, but because it’s the eighth generation home console and heavily shares the same software as upcoming Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

It was reported to us that the next-gen console was on display by invite only during CES 2012, running a version of Battlefield 3 in next-gen visuals – most likely to be up on par with current high-spec gaming PC’s.

Microsoft previously reported that there will be no next-gen Xbox announcement at E3 2012, but then again we also remember the amount of times they denied an Xbox 360 Slim console before that was the surprise of E3 2010!” [ThisIsXbox]

PlayStation Vita Gives Birth to Cross Platform Online and Universal Ownership

One of the PlayStation Vita’s strengths, which sets it apart from other handhelds, is its intimate bond to the PlayStation 3. PlayStation Vita gamers will be able to go face to face online with PlayStation 3 gamers over the PSN with Cross Platform Play.

Cross Platform DLC ownership is one of the other many fruits that Vita aims to deliver to loyal PSN gamers. Marvel VS Capcom 3 for PlayStation Vita will be among the games to sport the feature. If you buy the MvC3 DLC for your PS3 you get it for your PSV, no extra charge (and the opposite is true). Some DLC games will give you dual ownership as well, allowing you to avoid buying entire games twice in some cases.

Other early adopters of the feature include MotorStorm RC, Hustle Kings, Top Darts, WipEout HD, and HD Fury DLC for WipEout 2048 which are all Cross Platform Ownership enabled. Could this be a sign that digital distribution has its benefits after all?

The PlayStation Vita officially launches in the USA February 22, 2012 and is the first handheld to feature dual analog thumb-sticks, 3G/Wifi, and console quality graphics. If you’re too impatient to wait you can pick up the PlayStation Vita First Edition Bundle.
