Jungle Rumble is a 2D Real Time Strategy / Rhythm game for the iOS and now PlayStation Vita from developer Disco Pixel. Players take control of the group of monkeys, the Mofongo Tribe” as they fend off a neighboring tribe who is trying to steal all of the bananas in their part of the jungle. The game begins with a short intro cinematic and a tutorial on how to play the game. The game will also give a short tutorial whenever a new gameplay mechanic is introduced.
In the early stages of the game, the Mofongo tribe leader will teach you how to move around fluidly. The monkeys throw coconuts at their rivals and team up to fight bigger squads of enemies all while keeping the beat. The moves are placed on a four step rhythm, each representing a different beat of a conga drum.
When players get used to the basic game mechanics in the first act, Jungle Rumble picks up the pace in the second and the opposition will be come even more fierce. Players will have less time to complete levels and even more monkeys to deal with. When players end each level they will notice that their rating (gold, silver, or bronze) will be determined by how fast they cleared the stage, how many monkeys from their tribe are left standing, and did they dispatch all the enemies before grabbing the bananas and ending the level.
This is where the RTS elements come into play because the player not only has to time their moves to the beat but they also have to watch their foes before they get taken down. The third act will turn the story, as well as the gameplay, upside down and player wits will be tested like never before – but we will not spoil that for you here. The gameplay is fun, very upbeat, and addictive. The music syncs to every move the player makes while in-game.
Jungle Rumble’s user interface in the menus can be a bit daunting. Some players may find it hard to pick up where they left off in each section and will have to carefully tap the next level order to play. The game also keeps a very fast pace leaving some rhythm-deprived players out in the cold if they don’t time the beats just right.
These quirks aside, Jungle Rumble plays just as smooth as any other great mobile or handheld rhythm game out there on the market. The sound design is something to behold, as the game’s soundtrack completely syncs to the players moves and the conga drums add to the soundtrack as the missing instrument while you play. The graphics and art style are very stylistic and gamers will see the heart and soul that Disco Pixel put into the look of the game.
Jungle Rumble is a great hybrid among the many other games in the RTS / Rhythm genres. The game boasts a touching story, addictive gameplay, as well as an amazing soundtrack. The game has little blips that may slow down the game’s progression but the game is still wonderful to play. Jungle Rumble also has a bit of a learning curve that some players will have to get used to, though others may grasp in minutes. If you are looking for a new game to add to your PS Vita library or just want to try something different then Jungle Rumble is the game for you.
Jungle Rumble is a fun, cute, and daring mix of both Real Time Strategy and Rhythm game genres. The music and art style blend seamlessly with the gameplay to create an experience like no other. The game does have a couple user interface issues on the PlayStation Vita and the controls take a bit to get used to but all in all Jungle Rumble is a blast. There is no other game like Jungle Rumble available on the market today and if you are a PlayStation Vita owner or an iOS user this is a must own.
