Xbox ONE Broke? Pay Microsoft $621… Or Option B…

Xbox ONE Broken

Apparently gamers will not be able to get free shipping on broken Xbox ONE’s that they have to send back to Microsoft for repair under warranty. The legality of this is still in question but MS is rolling forwards with the practice as they have been receiving an unknown number of defective units for repair / replacement. But it gets worse…

Users suffering from a bricked next-generation Xbox ONE console can pay Microsoft £381 (US$621) in order to get a system back in 2 days flat, ship the broken Xbox ONE out at their own expense and get the £381 (US$621) fee refunded but only if the broken system arrives in 2 weeks or less and only if Microsoft determines that the defect was covered by their warranty. If they decide it wasn’t? You’re out the price of another console plus fees and shipping. Sounds great right? It gets better…

If you don’t want to pay upfront for a new console and wait for a refund you will have to wait for a shipping box to arrive and Microsoft will give you the slowest replacement service they possibly can. Promising only a “MINIMUM” of 2 weeks to get a replacement console in your hands.

Let’s hope that your Xbox ONE doesn’t brick in the first place, and in the event that it does – let’s hope they decide it’s covered by their warranty regardless of which option you end up choosing.

Oh, by the way you’ll get a free downloadable game if your console bricks… which is probably the least of your worries after reading this warranty policy procedure. 🙁

PS4 News: PlayStation 4 Supports Free Cross-Game Party Chat

PlayStation Vita was the first Sony console to be able to host cross-game chat conversations. For years Xbox 360 gamers have cherished the feature as one that gives its system a unique edge on PlayStation 3’s PSN network. It was often included in lists of reasons why Xbox gamers felt comfortable paying Xbox Live Gold’s fee.

Although there will be PlayStation Plus optional subscription service (and possibly a multi-tiered one), many features of PlayStation Network on the PlayStation 4 will not require any fee at all. Among these features is the ability to play online multiplayer games you own on the system as well as Cross-Game chat.

These features being free on PlayStation 4 will prompt Microsoft to either change their formula for online pricing or face skepticism from some gamers arguing their actual value. Of course this issue is just one of the many factors being calculated by gamers on the fence about which console manufacturer to invest with in the next generation of gaming.

Microsoft Buys Video Search Company for Upcoming Xbox 360 On-Demand Video Service

Like how your cable box glitches and struggles to change channels without latency? Oh. Well Microsoft doesn’t either apparently. They are working with integration on their newly purchased company VideoSurf (rumored to have cost them $100 million) to enable a Bing video search to work over their newly announced Internet Protocol Television solution. To translate that into english: your Xbox 360 can become your cable box with this new service, hypothetically.

GamaSutra also identifies a number of “40 major entertainment partners, including Comcast, Verizon, HBO, Syfy and Bravo.”

We will find out when Microsoft brings out their next dashboard update and entertainment service upgrades what this is really going to be like. For now we wait and watch Netflix teetering on a crash and burn if Microsoft can knock this out of the park for Xbox Live.

It was only a matter of time for some one to approach the cable companies for programming in a streaming, on-demand fashion, but will it be enough to compete with the industry-leading Blu-Ray standard and the PlayStation Store’s superior number of major hollywood film publishers?
