Pikmin 3’s Revival of Wii U

Three days after the launch of Pikmin 3 in Japan and already the game has been driving sales of the Wii U.  Just four days after it’s launch, Japanese retail and rental store Tsutaya noted that Pikmin 3 was topping the charts and indeed helping hardware sales of the struggling Wii U. The store’s Director of the Game Rental Planning Group quoted,

“Pikmin 3, that came out nine years after Pikmin 2, is having a really good start. Sales at Tsutaya are comparable to the release of Super Mario Bros U and have driven greater sales of  Wii U units.”

To put that into perspective, New Super Mario Bros U sold 163,528 copies in it’s release week in Japan. Pikmin 3 is just one of the few games coming out over the course of the next year which is critical to the Wii U’s revival. Over the course of the next 6 months, the Wii U will be getting some key exclusives including The Wonderful 101 in September, Windwaker HD in October and Super Mario Lands in December.

Many consumers have argued that the Wii U’s price at $299/$349 in America and $349/$429 price tag in Australia has been affecting sales, but given enough worthwhile games and people will be willing to overlook that price despite it still having a large price difference compared to the PS4 at $399 USD/$449 AUSD and the Xbox One at $499 USD/$599 AUSD.

Pikmin 3 is scheduled for release on July 26, 2013 in Europe, July 27, 2013 in Australia and August 4, 2013 in North America.
