Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Revisited

On the journey you discover Senua’s background (how she met Dillion, how she was raised, what the other villagers thought of her, how her psychosis affected her upbringing etc.). Along the way you find Lorestones which tell stories about Norse mythology as told by Druth (a former teacher/friend of Senua).

Hellblade’s First Gameplay Trailer and Newest Dev Diary Focuses on the Protagonist’s Troubled Mind

Senua

As promised yesterday, Ninja Theory has released a brand new trailer for their upcoming video game, Hellblade. The trailer gives us a look at the game in action, while also offering a deeper look at its plot. When we were originally told that the game follows Senua’s journey into hell, many assumed she would be traversing its underworld. Turns out it isn’t just about the realm of Helheim but a more realistic hell as well. A hell that many people face everyday, the degradation of one’s mental health.

“The Hell in question is no ordinary Hell, but is in fact a Hell that is the manifestation of Senua’s mental illness. Senua experiences psychosis, including hallucinations and delusions, as well as suffering from anxiety and depression. As a player you will witness Senua’s living nightmare through her own eyes,” explains Dominic Matthews, Ninja Theory’s Product Development Ninja

Fight

One of Senua’s Hallucinations?

The indie developer aims to deliver a fantasy experience that “breaks down barriers” and lets everyone “see the world without prejudice”, citing George Orwell’s 1984 and George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead as inspiration.

“Developing Hellblade independently gives us the freedom to tackle a subject as challenging as mental health. It is a subject that we are handling with all the respect it deserves, ensuring that our portrayal of Senua’s condition is both accurate and sensitive.”

Fight2

Mental Health is serious yet sensitive issue and Ninja Theory knows this. Therefore in order to properly tackle something so sensitive and taboo, they will work together with those who have a much better understanding of the subject.

“To help us with this we are working closely with Professor Paul Fletcher, a professor of Health Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge, as well as arranging to consult directly with people who have experience of mental health difficulties. We are also very proud to say that Hellblade is being supported by Wellcome Trust, which is a global charitable foundation which aims to build a greater public understanding of science and in particular health.”

Ninja Theory has also released their newest developer diary, offering more insight on the mind of Senua. Hellblade is set to release in sometime in 2016 for PS4 and PC.

Hellblade (PS4 Exclusive) Developer Diary #9 Focuses On Music [HD 1080P]

Hellblade RealGamerNewz

The musical creative process behind Hellblade is said to have been a bit more of a focus than for most games. Some heavy rock music paired with abnormal sounds, futuristic / dark themes, and orchestral symphonic tunes are heard in the 9th developer diary of the upcoming title from Ninja Theory. For those not keeping up, Hellblade is a hack and slash / action title hitting the PlayStation 4 on a yet to be announced date.

The development studio has been taking an approach of providing the gaming community with plenty of dev diaries that way there’s no shortage of information with which to form accurate expectations of the final product (or so we hope, especially after The Order’s fiasco in which many felt misled). Check out Andy LaPlegua discussing his journey as an artist through working with Ninja Theory on Hellblade and hear some of the audio atmosphere. More information on the game will be on RealGamerNewz as it becomes available.

More Hellblade trailers and gameplay including the other dev diaries can be found here.

Hellblade’s Newest Dev Diary Focuses on the Prototyping Phase

hellblade-2

The eighth developer Diary for Ninja Theory’s Hellblade was released today. This new video, offers fans a look into the prototyping phase in the title’s development. We see how the game’s environment comes to fruition, their approach to designing its enemies and combat system. It is all very impressive considering the size of their staff and the fact that they are not working with a huge budget.

Internal testing has begun, once that phase has ended some fans will have the opportunity to beta test the game. Ninja Theory is feels it is an exciting way (I agree) for gamers to assist them with Hellblade’s development.

In cased you missed it the studio recently revealed that their title will also be making its way to PC. This won’t be launching at a later date, as it will release alongside the PS4 version. Whenever that my be.

“We’re excited to be bringing Hellblade to PC gamers and welcoming them into the Hellblade development journey. PC offers us fantastic opportunities to engage players in playtesting, usability testing and modding. We plan on grasping these opportunities with both hands to make Hellblade as good as it possibly can be for our fans.” says Dominic Matthews Product Development Ninja

Hellblade-3

Hellblade’s Story will be “Deep and Personal”, Gameplay Footage coming in 2015

Hellblade-770x414

Indie developer Ninja Theory held another Q&A on twitter today, answering questions from their fans, on their upcoming title Hellblade.

In terms of story, NT states the one of Hellblade’s protagonist Senua will be “deep and personal” and have a “pretty serious tone”. When asked by yours truly if it would span multiple titles, the response was that Hellblade was their only priority for now. The game’s script also hasn’t been finalized yet.

In terms of gameplay, fans can expect the developer to use their past experiences with other games when designing Hellblade’s mechanics Those looking for some gameplay footage may get their wish in early 2015.

Other answers Ninja Theory gave can be seen below.

  • Would love to add extras to Hellblade such as Photomode
  • No co-op
  • Not sure if Hellblade will feature RPG-like customizable attributes for Senua
  • Not sure how many enemies and bosses the game will have, but it will be a “good amount”
  • Contemplating if Hellblade will be open world or not.
  • Hellblade is a timed PS4 exclusive
  • Combat will be more about focusing on individual enemies instead of large groups
  • No actual length has been set but fans can expect Hellblade to be shorter than the average AAA title
  • Unsure if Senua will fight with other weapons besides her main sword
  • Ninja Theory will be releasing a developer diary on Hellblade’s enemies

It is obvious from these answers that Hellblade is still very early in development but it is great that Ninja Theory are allowing the fans to be a part of the process.

Stay tuned to RGN for more on the game, including more dev diaries.

Meet Senua, Hellblade’s Protagonist in Ninja Theory’s Newest Dev Diary

senua3-1

“To create a character of intense realism, beauty, anger and history. A mystery that drives the action and story forward revealing more and more seductive details as she descends deeper into a vision of hell. She is a challenging female form not sexy, not skimpy, not young, not skinny, yet stunning, compelling and believable.”

These are the notes of Ninja Theory’s Chief Creative Ninja Tameem Antoniades after reading an article about a Celtic Goddess, as revealed in the indie studio’s third Hellblade developer diary.

The new video focuses on the game’s protagonist Senua — named after the newly discovered Celtic Goddess who inspired Antoniades, and her journey from the original concept stage to her look in the amazing Gamescom 2014 teaser trailer. Senua is a Pict, a Celtic Barbarian so NT made sure to design her as such; from a her clothing to going with a more lean and muscular body complete with battle scars.

See the Art that Inspired Ninja Theory’s Hellblade in New Dev Diary

HellBlade_zombie_army_15-1024x846

Ninja Theory has released their second developer diary for Hellblade. Last week’s video revealed the behind-scenes process in creating the game’s teaser trailer, while this week’s focuses on some of the early art that inspired the team featuring the Art Director Stuart Adcock and more.

With Hellblade being set during the time of Vikings and Celts, the studio’s art team took a trip to the British Museum in London and visited a Viking exhibit in the hopes to gain some inspiration for the game. For Ninja Theory it wasn’t just about looking at the objects, but holding discussions about them, trying to understand the culture behind them and using them to come up with their own unique take.

You can check out some of the impressive and down right hellish (Pun intended) concept art for the game, many of which won’t make it into the final product.

Here’s the First Dev Diary for Ninja Theory’s Hellblade

Hellblade

Indie studio Ninja Theory has released their first developer diary for their next project, Hellblade. The video titled, “The Announcement” focuses on the development of the teaser trailer which debuted two weeks ago at Gamescom 2014.

It is a very impressive to learn that Ninja Theory had very little resources at the beginning stages; with no designers, animators and only one but very busy programmer. They had to create the trailer around the art team at the time, which featured “a concept artist, an environment artist, character artist and an art director.

The main focus of the teaser was to introduce the main character Senua while also providing hints of some of the themes surrounding her story. Tameem Antoniades, co-founder and chief creative director for Ninja Theory states “When everyone in the room is shouting, jumping, screaming and shooting. The one way to stand out is to, just stand still.” Personally I felt the game most definitely stood out amongst the crowd at Gamescom.

You can check out the videos below to learn even more about their process, as well as check out some concept art for the teaser.
