Ironically there was an article back in January on a hardcore fan’s blog called The Story So Far but now that title is the name of an upcoming PS4 exclusive which will feature a compilation of Kingdom Hearts titles allowing players to get the backstory leading up to Kingdom Hearts III’s anticipated release on January 29, 2019 for PS4 and Xbox worldwide (and 4 days prior to that in Japan).
This move by Square Enix has garnered a little fan backlash from gamers who are on Nintendo Switch or Xbox One as well as some PS4 players claiming this was a “cash grab” since the titles are already available on PS4. However, the title is being offered at a heavy discount versus buying all of the games separately and makes for a great purchase if anybody hasn’t played the originals and does not yet own them on PS4.
Last Year Square Enix released Kingdom Hearts I.5 HD Remix for the Playstation 3 collecting Kingdom Hearts Final Mix HD, Kingdom Hearts RE: Chain Of Memories HD, as well as the HD remastered cutscenes from Kingdom Hearts 358/2. This was first time fans of the series in North America and Europe were able to play the Final Mix of Kingdom Hearts as the PS2 original was announced for North America but never was released outside of Japan. The fully HD remaster of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 was not included in this collection because of Square Enix’s licensing agreement with Nintendo for the original game on the DS but they allowed for the cutscenes to be remaster so gamers don’t miss out on any of the story. Several months later Square Enix surprised fans with the announcement of Kingdom Hearts III for Playstation 4 and Xbox One during the Sony Playstation E3 2013 Press Conference. The company then announced that Kingdom Hearts II.5 HD Remix would be released this year for the Playstation 3 roughly one month of after the original games’ release. Kingdom Hearts II.5 HD Remix contains both Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep Final Mix as well as the HD remastered cutscenes for Kingdom Hearts RE:Coded. Like the original title this is the first time that North American and European Fans were able play the Final Mix versions of Kingdom Hearts II as well as Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep in their home territories. Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix like the original game on the PS2 was never released outside of Japan. KH – Birth By Sleep on the other hand was a critically acclaimed PSP title and was never released digitally on the Playstation Network for the PS Vita as at the time of Sony’s Handheld Square Enix had no official plans to re-release the game on any platform even with purposed PSP transfer system that never saw the light of day, Kingdom Hearts fans had to either purchase Sony’s handheld or not play the game. The reason for this was due to heavy hacking of the Playstation Portals hardware and its possible impact on the sales of this prequel to the original Kingdom Hearts on the PS2. This strategy paid off big time for Square Enix as Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep sold well over a million copies worldwide and its success remains as a big statement of fan loyalty within the game industry as a whole. KH RE: Coded was originally a mobile phone game that was then translated into a Nintendo DS game and Square Enix has a similar agreement with Nintendo on this game as the do with the Kingdom Hearts 358/2 but it is nice to see that this entry in the series is included in some form or fashion as it is an integral piece to the Kingdom Hearts storyline. Kingdom Hearts II HD Remix will be playable at the Sony’s E3 2014 developer booth and will be released on the Playstation 3 on in Japan on October 2nd 2014 and then in the US and European territories on December 2nd 2014.
