RGN Podcast: Should Gamers Pre-Order Star Wars: Battlefront & Trust DICE / EA ?

RGN Podcast Aug 9 2013

After the big kick-off with Star Wars Celebration’s Battlefront Reveal and today’s Battlefront Dev Diary many gamers are split into two groups; those who are foaming at the mouth and throwing their money at the screen versus those who are calling foul, b.s., or much less friendly words towards their screens in disbelief and perhaps jaded but justified distrust. In the following RealGamerNewz Podcast we sit down and discuss whether or not gamers should think about pre-ordering the game at this point, which is what EA Games is suggesting everyone get ready to do right now. We also speak about all of the details thus far that are known about the game to be certain, which it turns out is not very much information at this time. DICE and their history developing games is discussed as well as the legacy of the Battlefront series.

In this Podcast we brought on RGN contributors who share differing views but are both determined to eventually play this game to see it for themselves, and we have a peaceful discussion which often breaks down into a debate showing both sides. One thing’s for sure, the pressure is definitely on for DICE and EA to surpass the partially complete, leaked, and cancelled Battlefront III that LucasArts was developing. Take a listen to the show below, do the research yourself, and make up your own mind. Thanks in advance for listening!

Grim Fandango Remastered PS4 Review

Grim Fandango logo

Grim Fandango is a 3rd Person Point & Click Adventure Game from LucasArts remastered by Double Fine Productions for the PS4, PS Vita, Windows PC, Linux, & Mac OS X. Grim Fandango follows Manny Calavera, a Reaper Of Souls in the Land Of The Dead, who is trying to get his hands on big cases from the new arrivals in the underworld by undermining his superiors. Manny soon discovers that even in death there is greed and corruption that will plague the soul. Manny decides he will help save the Land of the Dead as well as the client’s botched case that he was accused for sabotaging. The player will join Manny the player as he walks into the office for what will seem like a regular day at work but soon takes a turn for the worst as all over the Land Of The Dead haunts him.

Grim Fandango is still the the game we all grew up knowing and loving but the game does show its age, especially on a home console. The game is heavily puzzle-based and on console the player doesn’t interact with the environment as they do on Grim Fandango Remastered on Windows PC. Players with both versions of the Grim Fandango Remastered or those who remember the original will quickly notice that Manny’s original HUD (heads-up display element of the UI, or User Interface) is gone, this means players traverse around the world and interact with its surroundings they will do so sort of in the dark to what’s going on. This may have been done in an effort to keep the game closer to the original PC version but it also may end up leaving some players lost as to what to do next to solve the games many puzzles.

Grim Fandango HD Remaster PS4

The charming characters and amazing voice work will still push players to keep trekking through the game to see what crazy mishaps and strange encounters that Manny and his crew will  face in the Land Of The Dead if they are patient enough. The puzzles are complex requiring multiple parts to complete but are really simple if the player gives themselves time to listen carefully during the cut scenes as well as search entire areas before moving on. Players will also have to interview / interrogate certain characters to advance through the story and players find themselves laughing at the delivery of some of the lines after they make their choices. The writing material in Grim Fandango is genius and timeless, none of the jokes or gags feel dated, and the voice acting is still top notch.

When it comes to this version of Grim Fandango, some gamers may ask why is “Remastered” in the title. Tim Schafer and his team at Double Fine have made the game playable in HD, cleaned up and up-res’ed the character models, but that’s about it. The rest of Grim Fandango Remastered remains untouched and that may be because the team at Double Fine may or may not have access to all of the LucasArts assets due to the unique nature of this game’s license deal involving help from Sony to get the rights after LucasArts was shut down and acquired by Disney.

The game should be titled “Grim Fandango HD” in my opinion, since this is not the standard gamers expect from a modern day remaster. If a player hits the R3 button the game will revert back to the original version’s visuals and prove my point by seeing for themselves that not much has changed since the game’s original release in 1998. The audio quality is still superb and the team at Double Fine has recorded an audio commentary track that players can play and listen to in the background while playing that will give the player a behind the scenes look into the development of the game from Tim and his team at Double Fine.

Final Verdict:

Grim Fandango Remastered is the same great game we know and love from the late 90s and early 2000s with slightly updated visuals. This title still holds up pretty well even after 17 years of aging but the console remaster is still is a step behind the PC remaster version in terms of player controls. Both platforms provide something entertaining nonetheless. Grim Fandango would be as fresh and as fun today as a new released title even with the current titles from Double Fine Production like Broken Age or its competitors like “The Walking Dead” from Telltale Games. The tale of Manny Calavera is a fun, wacky yet witty tale of redemption and adventure that can now be experienced by a new generation of gamers for the first time.

Grim Fandango Remastered will be new for some and a classic for others, yet fun for all. It is the game that laid the ground work for fun yet complex character-driven stories told with an action-adventure theme, and point and click style gameplay. It may not offer many improvements from its original release but Grim Fandango Remastered is a trip for nostalgia junkies and something refreshing for new players to experience.

E3 2014: Grim Fandango – Retrospective Trailer [HD 1080P]

Grim Fandango PS4

Grim Fandango is a remake from the retro title by Double Fine Productions founder Tim Schafer who has been making video games since the early days of LucasArts. The PlayStation 4 title turned heads at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo and although it was announced to be hitting the Vita as well as other platforms, players are anticipating the PS4 version by a large margin with some fans even going as far as saying the title ‘cements’ PS4’s lineup.

Star Wars 1313 Is Probably Gone For Good Now… Despite Petitions & Incredible Gameplay Reveal

Star Wars 1313 Cancelled

Despite a pretty noble Petition Of Over 7,800 Signatures Disney has failed to keep perhaps the most special project of all Star Wars gaming history alive. Worked on passionately by the team at Lucasarts and revealed to the world with real gameplay that clearly showed Star Wars 1313 was perhaps beyond Mass Effect and Uncharted in its level of cinematic action, this project has probably just gotten its final death blow. The US Patent and Trademark Office has revealed that the trademark for the game’s name has been abandoned.

Gamers, hold on to hope – and keep signing that petition.

There’s a remote chance this game project could live on but just have a different name. Unfortunately, given Disney’s track record and LucasFilm’s candid attitude about using the 1313 technology in their films without crediting the original team who developed it – this could just be wishful thinking. RealGamerNewz will keep the world updated with this story as it progresses, take a look at the game below to see what the fuss is all about.

Jedi Knight II Source Code Released to Pay Homeage to LucasArts

The source code behind the title Jedi Knight II as well as Jedi Academy has been released by original developer Raven Software and publisher Activision who released the following statement which defined the release of the source as a way to pay homage to LucasArts being closed down by Disney as well as introduce new source to the modding and gaming community for various projects to be created and worked on for the fan-service and homebrew community.

“Raven is sad to hear about the closing of LucasArts today, we respected them and enjoyed working with them over the years. We wish the best for all the talented people who were let go and hope they find good work in studios in the industry.

We loved and appreciated the experience of getting to make Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy for LucasArts. As a gift to the persistently loyal fanbase for our Jedi games and in memory of LucasArts, we are releasing the source code for both games for people to enjoy and play with.”

Disney Has Disbanded LucasArts, Cancelled Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault (Battlefront 3)

In a stunning report this morning it has come to the light that Disney has laid off all LucasArts employees and cancelled “all current projects” this includes Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault which were highly anticipated titles being regarded as the ultimate comeback for the Star Wars video game titles. The Studio LucasArts has been completely disbanded and any results in attempting to create these games will now be met with licensing fees and entirely different teams making different games. Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault as we know them are now in IP limbo.

We will bring you more updates as the industry reacts to this and ask Star Wars fans to remain hopeful and make your reasonable demands, for these games to be completed, heard by Disney loud and clear in the comments section. We also look forward to seeing what the LucasArts team is capable of creating coming out of this financial disaster and wish them the best finding their new place in the game biz.
