Another up-to-date look at Terraria Otherworld

! Update: On April 13, 2018 Re-Logic announced that work on the Terraria Otherworld project was discontinued and the game’s final version has been cancelled. They’ve listed a number of reasons why and Lessons They’ve Learned on their official blog.

Awhile ago I wrote an article in regard to Terraria Otherworld. Well after a bit of waiting here’s a lot more information regarding this game. Terraria Otherworld’s alpha was released a few years ago. From first glance some would say it is just a remake of Terraria but that is definitely not true.

On this 3 year anniversary since its original announcement, and several months after a new management team has taken over the project, let’s take an up-to-date look at how this game turned out. In fact Terraria Otherworld adds some, if not many, new features, such as vital NPCs.

Many, many other mechanics and items also turn the original formula of Terraria on its head and give a new experience. Some of which are a new Skill Tree Mechanic. One example being, if a player prefers a certain combat style (i.e. melee, ranged, magic.) then the player will see said skill improve over time with constant use of those types of weapons.

The Mean Greens: Plastic Warfare – Review

The Mean Greens Logo

“The Mean Greens: Plastic Warfare” is a 3rd Person Online Multiplayer Shooter from Virtual Basement and Code Headquarters Inc. for the PC and soon to be released on the Xbox One and PS4. In this game players are once again asked to choose a side Green or Tan as the did in the  classic 3DO Army Men Games & Signal Studios Toy Soldiers: War Chest but in a whole new way. When players jump into The Mean Greens they will be pitted against 9 other players in 5V5 online skirmishes with ten game modes spread across the game’s ten maps which provided a refreshing twist to game modes like “Team Deathmatch” and “Capture The Flag”. These battles are played out in areas around your house; the kitchen, the bathroom, the bedrooms, the freezer and everywhere in between and in The Mean Greens even in these place that you are familiar with you still will feel like you are going to war in a place you never seen before.

The combat In The Mean Greens is very lighthearted yet very visceral on the battlefield. When players touch down on the map they will have instant access to a machine gun, a sniper rifle, a shotgun, a RPG and finally a flamethrower but good aim is key. Players that think that they won’t need to be quick on the sticks will have their plastic comrade biting the dust more often than not if they’re caught slacking. The one thing players will love about The Mean Greens is that  here is next to no lag with the dedicated servers, so no one will ever feel cheated when it their toy soldier goes home to the big plastic bucket in the sky. The rolling mechanic will save a soldier’s life and will get the player out sticky situations fairly quickly.  The player can also with correct timing turn the rolling mechanic into parry and return fire to dispatch the opposition. The combat is very fast pace and rewarding as players and their squad mates scrambling to complete objectives like lighting birthday Candles, raising their flag to claim all the cookies among other wacky missions.
The Mean Greens Screens 1
There are only a few things that may damper the amazing experience that is The Mean Greens one is the jump mechanic and another being aiming. The mouse or the thumbsticks if you playing with a control is automatically set in free aim mode, you can tweak the settings to fix this but then couple it with the jumping it can really be a pain because you have to focus on where you are jumping before you do so or else you will slide off the area you planned off jumping on. Players will have to spend some time adjusting and finding the best way to move around the level but combat is so fun and so addictive that they will want to master all the controls in now time to help out their squads during matches.  The only other problem with The Mean Greens is there is no single player campaign or scenario mode for gamers to play offline which some players may find as a deal breaker but others may not in this new gaming climate. The game has what some may call “OMG” or “One More Game” theory where players will play skirmish after skirmish without realizing that hours has passed. If one were to use a website like “Steam Spy” you will see that the “OMG” theory is in full effect and players are having a lot of fun playing with these plastic heroes.
The Mean Greens Screens 2
The Mean Greens Maps will remind you of how amazing watching the “Toy Story” films and the feeling of into going into a Chuck E Cheese or Dave and Busters for the same time. The look and feel of the game is crisp and clean due to Virtual Basements imaginative use of Epic Game’s Unreal Engine 4, players will know these characters, maps, environments and sets pieces from Toys, Food, and Appliances from around their house but will feel like they are in a whole new world during their play sessions. These Maps are accompanied by epic tunes inspired by old school war songs like the “Battle Hymn Of The Republic” or “Yankie Doodle” and sound effects straight out of films like “Apocalypse Now” and “Full Metal Jacket”  If you enjoy war games and welcome a playful and imaginative settings The Mean Greens is just right for you. If you on the fence about the game due to its “Online Only” status don’t be these will be the easiest and best $9 to $15 you will spend on Steam this month with all the big releases still yet on the horizon please do not  sleep on Virtual Basement’s Ultimate Tour De Toy Chest.

Final Verdict:

The Mean Greens: Plastic Warfare is fun filled 3rd Person Action Online Multiplayer Game the really breathes live into the Army Men game genre without being an Army Men game. Players who can take the time to master the challenging control system and get over the fact that the game is online only will be in for a highly addictive experience where their house is literally the battlefield and toys can still be their soldiers.

Grim Fandango Remastered PS4 Review

Grim Fandango logo

Grim Fandango is a 3rd Person Point & Click Adventure Game from LucasArts remastered by Double Fine Productions for the PS4, PS Vita, Windows PC, Linux, & Mac OS X. Grim Fandango follows Manny Calavera, a Reaper Of Souls in the Land Of The Dead, who is trying to get his hands on big cases from the new arrivals in the underworld by undermining his superiors. Manny soon discovers that even in death there is greed and corruption that will plague the soul. Manny decides he will help save the Land of the Dead as well as the client’s botched case that he was accused for sabotaging. The player will join Manny the player as he walks into the office for what will seem like a regular day at work but soon takes a turn for the worst as all over the Land Of The Dead haunts him.

Grim Fandango is still the the game we all grew up knowing and loving but the game does show its age, especially on a home console. The game is heavily puzzle-based and on console the player doesn’t interact with the environment as they do on Grim Fandango Remastered on Windows PC. Players with both versions of the Grim Fandango Remastered or those who remember the original will quickly notice that Manny’s original HUD (heads-up display element of the UI, or User Interface) is gone, this means players traverse around the world and interact with its surroundings they will do so sort of in the dark to what’s going on. This may have been done in an effort to keep the game closer to the original PC version but it also may end up leaving some players lost as to what to do next to solve the games many puzzles.

Grim Fandango HD Remaster PS4

The charming characters and amazing voice work will still push players to keep trekking through the game to see what crazy mishaps and strange encounters that Manny and his crew will  face in the Land Of The Dead if they are patient enough. The puzzles are complex requiring multiple parts to complete but are really simple if the player gives themselves time to listen carefully during the cut scenes as well as search entire areas before moving on. Players will also have to interview / interrogate certain characters to advance through the story and players find themselves laughing at the delivery of some of the lines after they make their choices. The writing material in Grim Fandango is genius and timeless, none of the jokes or gags feel dated, and the voice acting is still top notch.

When it comes to this version of Grim Fandango, some gamers may ask why is “Remastered” in the title. Tim Schafer and his team at Double Fine have made the game playable in HD, cleaned up and up-res’ed the character models, but that’s about it. The rest of Grim Fandango Remastered remains untouched and that may be because the team at Double Fine may or may not have access to all of the LucasArts assets due to the unique nature of this game’s license deal involving help from Sony to get the rights after LucasArts was shut down and acquired by Disney.

The game should be titled “Grim Fandango HD” in my opinion, since this is not the standard gamers expect from a modern day remaster. If a player hits the R3 button the game will revert back to the original version’s visuals and prove my point by seeing for themselves that not much has changed since the game’s original release in 1998. The audio quality is still superb and the team at Double Fine has recorded an audio commentary track that players can play and listen to in the background while playing that will give the player a behind the scenes look into the development of the game from Tim and his team at Double Fine.

grim-fandango-remastered-green-wallpaper-gameplay-screenshot

Final Verdict:

Grim Fandango Remastered is the same great game we know and love from the late 90s and early 2000s with slightly updated visuals. This title still holds up pretty well even after 17 years of aging but the console remaster is still is a step behind the PC remaster version in terms of player controls. Both platforms provide something entertaining nonetheless. Grim Fandango would be as fresh and as fun today as a new released title even with the current titles from Double Fine Production like Broken Age or its competitors like “The Walking Dead” from Telltale Games. The tale of Manny Calavera is a fun, wacky yet witty tale of redemption and adventure that can now be experienced by a new generation of gamers for the first time.

Grim Fandango Remastered will be new for some and a classic for others, yet fun for all. It is the game that laid the ground work for fun yet complex character-driven stories told with an action-adventure theme, and point and click style gameplay. It may not offer many improvements from its original release but Grim Fandango Remastered is a trip for nostalgia junkies and something refreshing for new players to experience.

#RPGChat : Ubisoft Brings Out Heroes of Might & Magic III – HD Edition [Over 30min HD Gameplay Footage]

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 HD Edition Steam - RealGamerNewz x Ubisoft x Gameplay

One of my favorite games of all time was Warriors of Might & Magic on the PlayStation 2. Sure, it was ahead of its time and games like Oblivion would later go on to realize something close to its ultimate vision – but did you know that the entire Might & Magic role playing game franchise is actually spanning many classic games from as far back as 1986 when Might and Magic Book One: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum was released as one of the first RPG video games (eventually reaching Apple II, Mac, MS-DOS, Commodore 64, NES, MSX, PC-Engine, and then many more platforms subsequently).

If you keep an eye on our RGN FB Social Feed you may have noticed that Ubisoft brought out Heroes of Might & Magic III – HD Edition for Steam just the other day and it is now available for purchase. We did some looking around and got our hands on over 30 minutes of footage courtesy of TouchGameplay on YouTube who calls this particular Might & Magic title ‘the most popular in the series’ though I would gamble everyone has their own tastes. Check out the footage below and let us know if you’ll be going back in time with us to experience this piece of RPG history.

This weekend during the PlayStation Experience Keynote, ‘Enter the Gungeon’, a new game was announced from Devolver Digital and  Dodge Roll. The game’s official Press Release offers more detail.

Tales From The Borderlands – Episode 1: Zero Sum Review

maxresdefault

Over the weekend I was fortunate enough to get my hands on Tales From The Borderlands for Xbox One thanks to our PR contact at Telltale Games. I was quite excited to get my hands on this game, as I have played all of the previous Borderlands games and I enjoyed playing through The Walking Dead from Telltale Games as well. While you don’t need any prior knowledge of the previous Borderlands games, it doesn’t hurt to have played them before. All the hilarious dialogue and quirky Borderlands moments still come out, even though you aren’t going around guns blazing this time.

In this story-based game players experience an intertwining tale told of Rhys and Fiona’s perspectives during a set of distinctive events that take place within the Borderlands universe. Rhys is a current employer at Hyperion and is in the midst of getting a promotion to find out that he’s been screwed over by his arch nemesis, Hugo P. Vasquez. Rhys then learns of plan that Hugo has set in place to obtain a Vault Key from a man named August in Pandora. From then on where the story goes is completely up to you. Just like any other TellTale game, your decisions change how the story plays out. Whether you want Rhys to become a murderer or  a fast talking con man, it’s completely in your hands.

Rhys

Fiona, on the other hand, is already a thief and a con artist. She grew up with much of nothing along side her sister Sasha, always scavenging for every little bit of money they could find. Both eventually becoming thieves and are taken in by a con man by the name of Felix. Fiona’s role in this story is that she is…… well I don’t want to give you all the fun details. Anyhow, she and Rhys end up crossing paths inadvertently creating the chaos of the story. Fiona’s side of the story can be played out in different ways as well. How she is perceived by other characters depends entirely on who you want her to be.

Fiona

My time spent in Pandora was most pleasant and quite entertaining. The conversations among the characters had me laughing hard here and there throughout the game. Graphically, the game looks very good. While there are some occasional frame rate issues during the cut scenes, it isn’t enough to be bothersome, but it is visible. The currency system in the game is a little lackluster and seemed a bit pointless for the things you can purchase. It’s entirely possible that the money will play a bigger role in future episodes, but for a first episode the player would apparently need to appreciate the cinematic gameplay style of the installment more in respect to this mechanic’s delayed effect.

I would highly recommend this game if you are looking for humor, a fun story, and of course if you love Borderlands. Telltale does a great job as always with the story-line and character interactions to warrant purchasing this game! The play-through time for me was roughly 2 1/2 to 3 hours but, was well worth the time spent.

Tales from the Borderlands_20141126191244

Final Verdict:

If you love playing through the Borderlands series on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, then you’ll definitely enjoy playing through this game and being around some of the funniest / fan-favorite characters from the BL Universe. For weekend warriors or totally new players to the franchise, this is a chance to meet the interesting cast behind all the shooting and hear their stories and learn about the notorious Handsome Jack. While there are a few questionable areas in this game, it is still overall a solid, fun, and entertaining title which leaves room for improvement in a second episode.
