It’s possible that PlayStation Plus will have multiple tiers on Sony’s next generation hardware PlayStation 4. One of the projects being worked on behind-the-scenes right now is a package that allows gamers to pay a small monthly fee and play thousands of games from the streaming technology being used by Sony for PS4.
There is also another reason for the multi-tier consideration, some gamers will want to watch tv shows and movies whereas others may just want to play games. Some gamers will want to pay for discounts, betas, and a few freebies here and there whereas other gamers may want to actually pay a slightly larger fee and get unrestricted access to play thousands and thousands of games for free. A tiered service would allow Sony to attempt to satisfy everybody’s unique demands without making them pay for things they don’t want.
This sort of system brings RealGamerNewz back to our digital renting theory for next generation gaming consoles. It’s going to be exciting to watch the distribution of digital product continue to evolve. I for one, however, am glad there will still be disc-based content in the future as well.
In interview regarding the subject, Sony Worldwide Studios’ President Shuhei Yoshida had this to say:
“As more and more services and contents become available digitally, we’ll have more of an option to create attractive packages,” said Yoshida. “So hypothetically we can look at different models – like a cable TV company.
“We could have gold, silver or platinum levels of membership, something like that. We can do subscription services when we have more content – especially now that we have the Gaikai technology available. With one subscription you have access to thousands of games – that’s our dream.”
