Gioteck HC-2 Stereo Headset Review

HC2

The Gioteck HC-2 Stereo Headset is a cable connected PS4 compatible gaming headset. It features large padded over ear speakers, an adjustable headband, a retractable mic, volume control and a mute sliding bar.

Pros:

The HC-2 has clear surround sound audio with ample bass. Though it was made for the PS4 and Xbox One, it is also compatible with phones, tablets and PC, maintaining performance across devices. While playing The Evil Within, I was able to tell with greater distinction, the location of enemies by their breathing and footsteps as they moved nearer or further away. Which was convenient in maneuvering at better timed moments.

hc2ps4

Cons:

Though at first the headset is very comfortable, it only remains so for a short time before the pressure turns painful. The mic movement is very stiff, perhaps in an attempt to prevent movement during use. However, this creates a weak spot in the bend at the base of the connection to the headset. Attempting to adjust the position of the mic while holding anything but the base will result in a crack or full on break.

Final Verdict:

Skip it!

While the performance of the HC-2 is good, I would not recommend it due to the fact that it isn’t likely to last very long. What is has in performance, it lacks in durability.

PDP Afterglow Kral Wireless PS4 Headset Review

Kral

The Afterglow Kral Wireless Headset for PS4, is the latest in gaming accessories from company, PDP. With countless gaming headsets out on the market, does the Kral deliver, or does it fail to set itself apart from the crowd?

The Kral’s has an appealing look and comfortable design. Its plush, polyurethane ear pads, fit wonderfully and feel really nice. Thankfully the headband features the same soft material underneath it, to keep from cutting into the top of your head. For those with bigger/wider heads than mine, it can be adjusted to accommodate for your size. The headset features transparent lenses on the outside of the ear pads, which allows you to see the circuit boards within. Its not a game changer but if you care for something like that, then it is pretty cool to see the inner workings of your device. Another cool feature is the bright blue LED light, that not only looks great but also acts as an indicator for the headset’s different statuses or modes.

All interactions with the Kral will be done on the left ear pad, thanks to the wise decision to place each button and port in one area. Don’t worry, they are properly spaced from one another, so you won’t end up accidentally hitting the mute button when you really want to change the volume. One minor gripe I have, is with its retractable microphone. While it is flexible, works amazingly for voice chat and is easy to take out when ready for use, putting it back in takes a little more effort than it should. Like I said, it is only a minor gripe and doesn’t hurt the overall experience with the headset. Ultimately, it is still a brilliantly designed product.

Kral volume

Setting up on the PS4 is a breeze. Just plug in the wireless transmitter to one of the PS4’s USB ports, turn on the headset and you are good to go. No need to go through the trouble of syncing the transmitter with the Kral, as they’ve saved you trouble packaging them already synced. If you do happen to come across any issues, then the detailed instruction manual will be of great help. Having used wired devices in the past, it is refreshing to go wireless this time around. No need to worry about tangled cords getting in the way and you have more freedom to move around. Speaking of moving around, the wireless transmitter’s range is an incredible 100 feet, meaning you can keep the headset on as you run to downstairs to answer the door, or whatever else you need to do. You’ll be pleased to know that I have yet to encounter any interference, while being far away.

All of the aforementioned wouldn’t matter, if the headset’s audio quality wasn’t up to par. PDP set out to deliver a product that allowed gamers, to hear the games as the developers intended and boy did they deliver. On top of providing crystal clear audio, for the sounds you normally hear, you’ll also notice every little nuance that would have otherwise been missed. From the soft footsteps of your gaming protagonist to the plane flying off in the distance and more. It really adds to the experience, making any game — with a great sound design, more enjoyable than before. Action games feel more action packed, and horror games are, well… more horrifying. I mean seriously, it feels like that creepy voice in the dark is actually behind you, breathing in your ear, taunting you. It’s unnerving and I love it. The headset also does a great job of balancing out the in-game audio with the audio of your fellow players when using game chat. If you don’t find it balanced enough, you can always adjust the settings to find the perfect set up for you.

The Kral features a second audio mode for those of you, like myself, who love a lot of bass in their life. The Bass Boost mode does exactly what the name implies, its amplifies the low end frequency, giving that extra kick to any scenario. Explosions have much more of an impact than ever before. Scoring a head shot in Sniper Elite III, literally made my jaw drop due to how powerful it felt. It is also a great for listening to music with a lot of bass and movies with action heavy scenes and particular scores. Opinions will differ but personally, this is by far my favorite way to utilize the headset and I don’t even bother using the excellent default mode. It is amazing how PDP managed to keep the enhanced bass frequency from compromising the clean audio. If you want more depth to your audio experience, then this is the mode and headset for you.

Explosions

I’m all about that Bass, bout that Bass!

While this is marketed as PlayStation 4 headset, this bad boy is also compatible with PC and mobile devices. Setting up via the USB transmitter on my laptop, was just as easy as on my PS4. The process wasn’t instant, but it only took around two minutes, so it wasn’t an issue. For a quicker set up, you can connect the headset with the included 3.5 mm audio cable but I would only recommend doing so, if you are unfortunate enough to lose your transmitter. The audio quality is still great, but you won’t be able to use the Bass Boost mode while wired, not to mention you lose the advantage of going wireless. Still it is great to have the option. You can also go wired with your smartphone and listen to music, watch videos, game, whatever your vice, with the same crystal clear quality. The microphone still works as well, so if you want to have a phone conversation of any kind, you can.

The battery life is absolutely impressive, it really does last up to 10 hours as it claims on the box, if not a little longer. Playing games, watching videos, listening to music and chatting on Skype over the course of two days before finally hearing the little audio beep that signals it is time to charge, surprised the hell out of me. The battery itself is rechargeable via the 6-foot play and charge cable. As the name suggest users will be able to charge the headset while you game, listen to music and so forth, so you do’t have to worry about any interruptions.

Final Verdict:

The Afterglow Kral is a beast of a headset, comfortable, featuring a great design and outstanding audio. It greatly benefits from being a wireless device but PDP were kind enough to include the option to go wired as well. The fact that it works for multiple devices and is easy to set up is an added plus. I can’t praise the Bass Boost audio mode enough. Though it is priced a bit high ($100), it is very much worth it and any PS4PC owner looking to pick up a headset should definitely purchase it. It is the best gaming headset I’ve had the pleasure of using.

Archangel Review

archangel-650

Archangel is a Diablo style game available on the Google Play store and iOS. Developed by Unity Games when you look at this game first hand it seems like you get what you’re buying. With games these days it can be a huge gamble, especially if it is digital so is Archangel a worth it investment in your game collection?

The graphics are reminiscent of early last gen but all levels look basically the same, well exactly the same. They seem to even be slightly based on the Diablo art style but not really, they have a unique touch to them. The engine runs pretty smooth as the frames seem constant, and I only experienced glitches when trying to pause my games, I had to double click. The music is just typical fantasy stuff, nothing outstanding but it does not really matter.

The enemies in the game seem to just blindly run at you while swinging weapons at you. Despite being very easy to handle most foes, sometimes there can be too many enemies or a lot of mini bosses at the same time. You can usually handle easily with just some spells or swipes, but other times you may want to fall back, regain health, then attack again.

57241-2014-01-13-02

Due to the fact it is a mobile game the touch controls are in motion. They are really simple though. You tap to move your guy in a direction, tap enemies to shoot them, and double tap to teleport. The game features 30 levels, with each gaining new enemies and getting harder as you progress, well it is actually pretty easy. I found some levels easier than the previous ones. The only thing they do is increase the number of enemies on the screen which is more annoying, as it makes it only harder to target a specific enemy. While the gameplay is solid it can get very repetitive fast which is kinda expected of the mobile game genre, but still in all respect it should not be as developers should try harder to get rid of the repetitiveness. The story is really non-existent, you just play as the Archangel and smite demonic enemies and such.

Replay Ability: Moderate

Final Verdict:

Though it is a fun game to hop in and out of, there are so many things that could’ve be done better. For example a wider variety of enemies, harder difficulties, and various other additions. Maybe even a few other features like flying as the Archangel would have been cool. It is what is though and honestly I enjoyed playing it. Archangel gets a 6.75 out of 10.

Hitman Ain’t Dead Yet…

Hitman Aint Dead Yet

Recently reports were circulating that a next-generation edition of the Hitman series was being cancelled by Square Enix as per LinkedIn Resume accounts of certain employee accounts in the developer world citing a change from one such title to a mobile title instead. With the worry that there will be too much of a negative down-spin on the company’s image and a settling down of hype for the next Hitman title, Square Enix has decided to kill those rumors right here and now.

A statement was released by Square Enix basically explaining what reporters had scrupulously noticed taking place with the resumes of devs on LinkedIn who were thought to be working on a next-gen Hitman title. These employees work at Eidos Montreal and Square Enix has stated that they are working on high-end mobile titles, some of which are in fact related to the Hitman franchise. S.E. also went on to notify gamers that they can expect a fresh and new installment of the Hitman series to arrive on next-gen eventually and that the title is being developed by IO Interactive who developed the Hitman games independently at first before becoming a major success story with subsequent releases in the franchise.

Although IO has had their ups and downs (*cough cough, Kane & Lynch is trash) we should be happy that the Hitman series is back in the hands of its original creators and give them the benefit of the doubt with revealing what could be a complete revival of the series after the fairly well received Hitman: Absolution title released not too long ago.

NASCAR Redline Review

NASCAR_Redline_Screenshot4

NASCAR Redline is a mobile game that recently released for the iOS App Store and is built to take full advantage of the iPhone 5’s extended capabilities. Eutechnyx is a known developer behind many NASCAR games published on console as well as PC spanning a number of impressive simulation and gameplay experiences. This title takes the fundamental experience of games like NASCAR: Inside Line and NASCAR: The Game 2013 and essentially puts them in your pocket. With Redline though, that isn’t just a selling tag, it’s actually true as nearly all aspects of the game have been recreated for the mobile title, but now turn-based.

Controls: That’s right turn-based. NASCAR Redline features input at certain moments that effect the simulation of what you’re seeing. You can start and pause a statistics feed you’re seeing which tells you your position in the game, the amount of damage done to your car, and how much fuel you have. There’s also a text narration of the events taking place in the race, such as drivers passing each other or experiencing difficulties. You’ll also be notified of caution timers and be able to select how much gas to get in the pit, tires to swap, and how heavily to repair your vehicle. This is basically a turn-based system that is sometimes randomly interrupted to bring you to a cut-scene which asks you to hold the gas or break for a certain amount of time, prevent the vehicle from redlining, and then wait to see how this is played out in hi-fidelity graphics followed by in your text-based stat-readout view of the simulation.

Now I know what you’re thinking, Redline isn’t a racing game. This is a title for the iPhone 5 which you can pick up and play at any moment, with micro-seconds of gameplay dedicated at a time if necessary. Redline represents a flawlessly reliable, beautiful looking, and intense simulation game controlled by a fairly straight-forward menu screen with cut-scenes that you control acted out in a visually 3D world that is mind-blowing hi-fidelity.

This type of gameplay experience is not going to be for everyone. Some might be looking for the more direct racing experience, and while all aspects of the NASCAR sport and game series are here, they are represented by a completely new input and control style. This game, however, is perfect for the iPhone 5. Gamers on the run who love the NASCAR video games by Eutechnyx finally have a NASCAR sim in their pockets which allows them to pitch fictional races, control a driver in them, and do all of this while busy in their real lives at work or at a doctor’s office waiting around. Small snippets of gameplay can be had with Redline. It can be placed in your pocket with the race still taking place. Then it can be picked up and interacted with. There’s also incentive to keep playing more often thanks to a complete campaign system.

Nascar Redline Review

Campaign: The full week by week campaign of NASCAR Redline from Eutechnyx is a complete simulation of the career in a NASCAR driver’s life. From races, to training, to upgrades, and even managing sponsors players are taken through many aspects of the sport with their hi-resolution vehicle pitting and speeding against other drivers to make it to the top. Development of your skills is a necessary part of moving through the entire game which also features an unlockable “SEASON” experience that delivers the authentic experience of a competitive driver in the NASCAR racing league.

Gameplay: There seems to be nothing missing from its console counterparts as NASCAR Redline enters the mobile world as possibly the most polished racing game on the entire platform, however the way you play the game is totally different. The game’s simulation and input, found in more detail above (in the controls section),

Drivers / A.I.: The artificial intelligence of the drivers in NASCAR Redline are what you’d expect from a Eutechnyx game, they’re realistic and brutally difficult until you get on their level. All of the real life drivers from NASCAR are here as well as the images of their vehicles in a high resolution 3D representation. Eutechnyx is a trusted developer of the NASCAR licensed intellectual property and Redline is an official production sanctioned by the NASCAR companies. But the game isn’t all serious, it’s pretty funny to watch the player’s vehicle peel out doing donuts after a race.

Graphics / Art Direction: The art style of NASCAR: Redline is of course photo-realism with graphics that impress on the iPhone 5 model series of devices. Eutechnyx shows their mastery at even mobile games as this title delivers the experience of a full NASCAR game found on consoles or even the PC. If anything the Redline mobile game for iPhone 5 shows off the scale to which this developer is ready to make a full racing title. We surely hope this is in the plans and pipeline for driving fans that want a real-time experience rather than a time management game.

NascarRedline4

Soundtrack, Audio, Voice: Realistic background noise and engine effects are found in the game. There’s no voice-acting or major audio system in the game, other than during its interactive cut-scenes, but the soundtrack does remain true to the NASCAR theme and license. There is a decent offering of music in-game, including a “Redline” soundtrack that fades in and out at times among other sound effects.

Replay Ability: High – Customization and upgrades held over the course of gameplay make it so the title is easy to play over and over with perpetual goals giving your thumbs a long play-through.

Engine Performance: No glitches were experienced during our play-through of the game.

Final Verdict:

Once you’re into the concept of a NASCAR racing simulator that allows pocket-play at any time, the title fits well in your iPhone and is completely worth the low price it’s being charged. NASCAR Redline gives you a quick play on an interactive action piece for the true NASCAR fans out there. If you aren’t a fan of the franchise, you can still appreciate a quick game of this with time to spare. Those who are looking for a full driving / racing NASCAR title on the iPhone 5 will currently be disappointed though, which is basically the only negative point of this title. For those who may have expected a different genre for NASCAR’s first iOS installment, they will be met with an unfamiliar set of gameplay mechanics to the NASCAR IP. But if they give that unfamiliar experience a chance they will find a very polished, thought-out experience meant to take away any mind-numbingly boring moments out of life and replace them with dreams of winning at the All-American Driving Sport.
