Air Conflicts: Pacific Carriers Review

Air Conflict Pacific Carriers

Air Conflicts: Pacific Carriers is a flight combat simulator showcasing dogfights and missions taking place during the second World War and specifically the Pacific as players get the option to play as the Japanese Imperial Navy or the U.S. Navy. The game was originally released in the United Kingdom on multiple platforms but has recently been re-released in North America and serves as a PlayStation 3 exclusive complete with 3DTV and PlayStation Move support.

Story, Gameplay, ControlsFor History buffs or just lovers of the World War II experience in video games, the context and plot-lines of Air Conflicts: Pacific Carriers are probably the strong point of this game. Genuine to the WWII events that took place in the Pacific arena, you’ll participate in missions that involve scouting, dogfights, scrambling from aircraft carriers once an enemy has been identified (though landing is optional), and taking out communication systems as well as freeing prisoners of war.

Air Conflict Pacific Carriers 2

There are a few different ways to control things in the game, including an arcade-style maneuvering method that is friendly to players of all genres as well as a more challenging simulation mode. You can alternatively hook up the PS Move for a motion-controlled experience. Overall, the controls are not very difficult to master no matter which method you decide to go with. Players have a fair amount of leeway before stalling out, which allows more of a focus on gunning down other planes which is what the  majority of the game is. There is some extent of auto-aim throughout the game, so experienced shooters shouldn’t find Pacific Carriers terribly difficult in that sense.

Graphics / Art Direction: The graphics in this game are not bad at all, and if you’re looking for a more authentic World War II look then the Art Direction is a good fit for the experience.

Engine Performance: No glitches were experienced during our play-through of this game.

Final Verdict: Air Conflicts: Pacific Carriers provides the perfect balance between realism and fun factor for the PlayStation 3. If you just want to relive a few Pacific-based World War II moments (from either side of the struggle) you’re in for a well polished experience. Unfortunately, this can become repetitive and the challenge never really increases. The game’s flow is very much a static one, causing you to feel the same way throughout the game. If it had more exciting moments and more of a variation of gameplay it could have been one of the greats. As it stands, Air Conflicts: Pacific Carriers receives a respectable 7.5 out of 10 making it a Bronze Game on the RGN Rating scale.

DualShock 4’s Light Sensor Cannot Be Shut Off

DualShock 4 Light Bar Doesnt Turn Off

It’s been confirmed by Sony Computer Entertainment that the new DualShock 4 controller launching for the upcoming Sony PS4 (PlayStation 4) which launches this Holiday 2013 season will not feature an ability to shut the light sensor on the controller off. Similar to how the PS3 works, the light bar sits at the top of your controller and indicates which player it is (player one, player two, etc.).

However, the DualShock 4 also incorporates PlayStation Move technology and uses the light bar to also communicate with the (sold separately) PS4 Eye. This may be part of the reason why the feature is permanent at the time of this writing.

This is a very minor detail of a great looking next-generation launch for both Microsoft and Sony, but as the saying goes “haters gonna hate” and this is likely going to end up a detail in someone’s console war/fan-boy checklist.

Sony’s “The PlayRoom” Exclusive to PS4 Uses PS Eye 4 + DualShock 4 Together

PlayStation 4 uses an exclusive technology known as PS Eye 4 in combination with the DualShock 4 in order to present the following project. The PlayRoom will launch exclusively for PlayStation 4. It is unclear the entire scope of this video game / entertainment software hybride, check out the trailer below to get a feel for the concept and technology at work. This video also gives an insight finally to a few different ways developers may plan on implementing the DualShock 4’s touchpad.

PlayStation 4 is a next-generation game console that will launch Holiday 2013 and is already being pre-ordered around the world. Some more Sony PS4 exclusives shown so far include Killzone Shadow Fall, Infamous: Second Son, DriveClub, Knack, in addition to multi-platform next-gen games like Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Destiny, and more.

The PlayStation 4 Eye Camera will be available separately from the Sony PS4 next-generation game console for a currently speculated price of $59.99 according to retailers such as Amazon and Gamestop. The DualShock 4 controller which comes with the Sony PS4 console features new touchpad control in the center of the device as well as motion sensor technology similar to what is seen in the PlayStation Sixaxis and Move currently on PS3. This game fuses those two technologies together to combine them into this:

PlayStation 4 Specs and Release Date Confirmed Again by Official PlayStation Magazine

Today the Official PlayStation Magazine sorted out the claims from the reality when it comes to what exactly PlayStation 4 will bring to the table in terms of hardware specs and even when we can expect to get our hands on the machines ourselves. Among the data compiled OPM also mentions that Killzone: Shadow Fall is “rumored” to have run with only 1.5gb of PlayStation 4 8gb GDDR5 Memory being used, seeming to suggest far more power will come out of PlayStation 4 for years to come upon release to the market.

Beyond the features OPM mentions, we at RealGamerNewz are also excited to report that our most anticipated feature will be instant game demos (no downloading required) and in-demo purchases that will download the rest of the game for you without interrupting gameplay. If this can be pulled off gracefully then we will once and for all have an end to bad shopping experiences in digital distribution stores on gaming console devices.

Top 5 Most Original Gaming Experiences of This Gen

Putting aside sales, review sores, and preferences pertaining to exising ideas in the gaming universe, what makes a title original? If you would love to see more original titles release, then you must support the ones that have made it this far in the first place. But first, you have to be able to recognize a truly unique title. It’s unusual nature will typically drive many gamers away due to the initial fear of what is unknown.

This is an understandable reaction and yet a foolish one because although you don’t want to spend your dollars on a wasted purchase, you will never know how good a game is until you try it for yourself. Many games that seem strange and different in annoying ways end up becoming a masterpiece. A masterpiece which you almost didn’t recognize hidden amongst the piles of sequels, prequels, and threequels we all know by heart.

(Click the game title to go to the games/developers website and find out more about the titles)

#5. Sorcery (PS Move) – Sorcery basically single handedly made the PlayStation Move a complete success, at least in terms of good hardware design being put to use. This title allows players to bring Move wielding from an akward truce between controller and game to a symbiotic relationship of gamer to experience, grinding your own herbs by hand to create potions and more.

Performing with cutting-edge technology this New IP was made possible by the vision of a new way of playing games. The title will go on to spawn a sequel in the near future, offering deeper immersion for another iteration. Well surpassing any earlier attempts at such an idea, Sorcery made its mark to stand out as the 5th most original gaming experience this generation.

#4. BlindGiRl (Xbox Live Arcade) – From humble indie roots this rose grew from concrete into the second most original gaming experience of this generation. Much as the title hints, you play as a blind girl. The title has also gone on to spawn a sequel, BlindGiRl2. The visuals in this game are what draw your attention immediately.

Amazingly the game features a sonar-like system in which sounds paint a picture to the world around you. Using an abstract and previously unseen visual display like this makes you think in new ways. It feels like you’re playing a whole new genre when you play a game like this and that’s why it’s on this list.

#3. Stacking (PlayStation Network / Xbox Live Arcade / Windows PC) – The developers of Costume Quest and Brutal Legend, Double Fine Productions, brought out Stacking as a downloadable title that was developed in the spare time of the team. While in the midst of larger corporate projects Tim Schafer’s team put together this incredibly unique gameplay concept in which players must navigate a world of russian stacking dolls.

Each stacking doll is a person in this world, however you can assume control of them by jumping inside. With so many different goals, abilities, and challenges this game turns out to be a full featured game. The title was also made available for the Windows PC earlier last year. I offer a full salute and kudos to Double Wide for this unique title.

#2. Flower (PlayStation Network) – Winner of Best Independent Game of 2009 among other awards is  the PS3 exclusive Flower. Never before has a game thrown caution to the wind in such a quite literal sense. Having a completely unique and ever-changing way that the world is expressed to you is the perfect definition of an original game.

Flower was approached as a work of art and it turned out to be one by many’s account. All games should strive to have such originality, however I particularly encourage the abstract approach. With so many over-used color palletes and asset catalogs in the game industry today it’s refreshing to find games truly starting from scratch with their designs and ideas.

Gamers of all kinds were able to enjoy the title, and it has received numerous awards for its innovations in gameplay design, which were honestly exaggerated by the backdrop of an industry severely lacking creative releases.

#1. LittleBigPlanet (PS3 + PS Vita) – A game where you can make your own games. It has been attempted before, but never quite like this. Gamers were treated to a delight with LBP when Media Molecule brought out a very powerful community network capable of hosting games for tons of players simultaneously on levels created by players, published by players, and played by players all on the PlayStation 3 console. We’ve seen everything come from the LBP universe at this point from fully functional computation devices being crafted in virtual reality to full featured games and broadway plays being produced within LBP. This game came out of nowhere and shocked the entire industry, even the haters had to recognize.

With a healthy living, breathing online community full of builders, testers, tinkerers and gamers, LittleBigPlanet has spawned three releases across the PlayStation hardware family with likely more to come. The best thing about the game is that it has virtually unlimited re-playability with thriving communities online constantly creating new levels. The originality never ends, which is why we award LittleBigPlanet the prestige of #1 Most Original Game of this Gen.

Honorable Mention: Borderlands (Multi-Platform) – although many of its concepts were already pre-existing, we would feel wrong if we didn’t mention Borderlands amongst the most original titles of this console hardware cycle. For us at RealGamerNewz, Borderlands was the first true mix of role playing and shooting seen since the original Deus Ex. Ever since the first trailer in which we were told that “FPS and RPG made a baby” it has been a never-ending adventure for millions of gamers who fell in love with Gearbox and 2K’s sexy formula. The series is alive and healthy today spawning a sequel which recently had a cumulative DLC released.

PlayStation 4 Controller DualShock 4 Capable of Virtual Reality Gaming

With the built-in support of DualShock, dual analog sticks, pressure sensitive face buttons and arrow pad, four triggers, a touch bar in the center and built-in Move technology, the controller is now alive.

Picture walking a tight rope while being shot at in the latest shooter game and bringing your enemies to their death while surviving yourself. Drop the controller? You’re dead. This type of virtual reality gameplay that has been seen in the past with various add-on projects will all be built-in to each DualShock 4 controller.

If the capabilities being displayed with Media Molecule’s creative and untitled New IP are any indication, there will still be functions that a Move controller (or one in each hand) can do exclusively.

There are also two new additions to the controller seen as buttons on either side of the touch bar. One is the power, or “suspend” button for the PlayStation 4. You can instantly power down, or “suspend” your PlayStation 4 to hibernation with the exact moment you were gaming stored away in its memory. When you bring the PlayStation 4 back to life you will be right where you left off.

The controller also features a share button with built-in UStream scheduling, streaming, Facebook support, as well as native support for capturing screenshots and gameplay footage with the PlayStation 4’s own user interface.

Be on the lookout as the graphics, gameplay, and controllers change with the next generation hardware PlayStation 4 from Sony scheduled for release Winter 2013. Check out more information here.
