RuneHeads discusses their expectations with PS5 and Xbox Scarlet

In a recently published interview with GamingBolt, Matteo Sciutteri of RuneHeads has revealed a few expectations for next-generation hardware currently in development from Microsoft and Sony. As many may know, Microsoft openly announced the Xbox Project Scarlet family of consoles to be in development at this year’s Xbox E3 2018, though no details were yet provided. Sony has been vague about details as well, merely stating that a next-gen console can be expected from them around 2020 or 2021 with a possible name of ‘PlayStation 5’ given by the leading game industry giant.

PlayStation NOW Reaches Over 100 PS3 Games for Rental Streaming Service

How To Play PS3 Games on PS4 - PlayStation NOW

The following new games are being added to PlayStation NOW which allows users to broadcast PlayStation 3 games from Sony servers to their PS4 consoles and play them through there. The service remains controversial and not a particularly good deal, but if you got rid of your PS3 foolishly then you may want to take a look. Do note that a good internet connection is absolutely necessary for this to work and still might cause a delay for input latency. Beyond that, the trailer does not represent the quality of actually playing these games on PS NOW (the trailer admits this).

The quest for backwards compatibility isn’t a great thing when it comes at the cost of the experience itself, but if you must do the PS NOW then at least do your research first before jumping in. Here are the new games being added to the service for May 2015, me personally I still have a PS3 so I have no use for this. Call me when you start renting out PS4 games Sony.

PlayStation Now’s Monthly Price Plan Announced, Is It Too Much?

PlayStation Now Subscription

So, everyone under the sun probably wants the ability to rent games from home without needing to wait for discs to show up. But pretty much nobody agrees with the prices Sony has instated on PlayStation NOW (the digital streaming service for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita) especially for long term rentals / streams.

A great solution to this stop-gap preventing digital rentals from really prospering in the PlayStation ecosystem and making noise in the industry overall as they should be, would be to offer a cheap monthly solution similar to Netflix that didn’t require pay for each game.

Such a plan was said to be in the works for months, today Sony has finally announced that plan’s price. But is it too much? Here are the details below, followed by my own personal opinion about the service, where it is today, where it’s going, and how I feel about these price points / feature offers.

PlayStation NOW Pricing:

  • 7 Days Free Trial Offer for new PS NOW subscribers
  • $19.99 – 1 Month Access to “100+ PS3 Games”
  • $44.99 – 3 Months Access to “100+ PS3 Games”
  • OR Continue Renting At Current Prices without Monthly Access

The problem I see with this system is that users are being offered the one month option for $19.99 and feeling like it is too much, when Sony has offered the 3 Month option at a price that essentially reduces that closer to $14.99 (a price we are all too familiar with for monthly services, but has been deemed acceptable by users of services like Netflix in the past). If this could have been debuted for $14.99 a month and some sort of yearly discount like $99 a year or so, people would be much more interested.

Even though this isn’t much more than that, Americans have long had a psychological obsession with numbers in advertising that proves this theory. That’s how the entire 99 cents thing got invented, meaning – when an item costs $19.99 instead of $20.00 a psychological mind trick is being performed on you by the marketing team of that product. Sony failed to keep up with the latest in American marketing when deciding their prices.

So with that in mind, it seems Sony is $5 too high on the monthly fee, and $10 too high on the yearly fee for what people have deemed acceptable as recurring fees in their lives for services like this.

My Conclusion:

For all of the content Sony is offering, they are right to expect great profits. But those profits are going to come from a huge amount of users enjoying to get a great deal on streaming these games, not from abnormally high prices that the rest of the industry is already well beneath.

Rumor: Leaked Info Regarding Sony’s E3 Conference: The Order, Uncharted, God of War and More

the-order-1886-playstation-4_219852

According to Dualshockers, info in regards to Sony’s E3 press conference has been shared with them today from a reliable source. E3 is just under one month away, so clearly one can expect rumors regarding the event to surface but DS claims they were able to confirm parts of it with second source, adding some credibility to it. The detailed info in bold are double sourced and hold more weight but as always take it all in with a grain of salt.

  • Uncharted PS4 3 Minute Trailer showcasing ”In-engine” footage interspersed with gameplay segments. Visuals are supposedly unprecedented and set a benchmark for console graphics. Summer 2015 release date. It looks absolutely stellar. Features tropical setting and differing time periods with Nate/Francis.
  • Media Molecule’s new title will be a landmark title for Morpheus. 3D world building, beautiful, quirky visuals.Extremely creative and fun. Possibly related to the ”Entwined” trademark filed last week by SCE (not sure). Late 2015.
  • Gran Turismo 6 is coming to PS4 as 1080p 60FPS repackaged title in the vein of Gran Turismo 7: Prologue. Stunning visuals, extra features (social connectivity, new tracks, dlc etc). Coming mid-late 2015.
  • God of War 4 teaser will be present – will be CG with snippets of in-engine footage. A little early for reveal, but is designed to offset negativity surrounding canceled new IP and generate excitement – also to partially offset CG announce of Gears of War at Microsoft presser. Late 2015. Date wont be announced.
  • Kill Strain trademark is related to Syphon Filter reboot for PS4. Sony Bend working on revamping the franchise. Stealth, beautiful visuals and a possible Winter 2014 title. Bend finally getting to join the big boys.
  • Wipeout is also making the transition to PS4. Source is unsure of who is developing it, but hints that it could be Sony London, Evolution, or Firesprite.
  • Quantic Dream has a trailer prepared – unsure whether it is penciled in for Gamescom or E3. Sony will be watching Microsoft’s presser earlier in the day to gauge whether additional titles will need to be slotted in to dampen hype. Expect Dark Sorcerer- like visuals in real time. Off-topic, but still relevant – they are close to deal to become a Worldwide Studios developer, along with Ready At Dawn.
  • Speaking of Ready At Dawn, The Order:1886 will get a stage demo. Big title for Fall 2014.  Sony is expecting great things from said title – franchise hopes rest on its performance.
  • Ninja Theory working on a PS4 exclusive – possible Heavenly Sword sequel which was shelved a number of years ago. Quite far into development.
  • Sony London will be at E3. First AAA title in many years. 3rd person title. Gorgeous. They’re back with a bang,
  • Guerrilla Games bringing their RPG to E3. Provocative setting – very interesting. Insane visuals as usual. A good reaction to the title is expected. Will please the hardcore.
  • Sucker Punch busy at work on an inFAMOUS: Second Son DLC. Really cool. New powers. Possible new setting. E3 debut.
  • Sony Japan Studios debuting two, maybe even three titles. Project Beast – spiritual successor to Demon Souls. The other is The Last Guardian. Retooled for PS4, possible Winter 2014 title. The Other title is shrouded in secrecy.
  • Evolution will give Driveclub some time in the limelight. It’s shaping up to be incredible with jaw-dropping visuals. Demo release will be timed with  the press conference.

Publishers are also expected to take the stage according to this anonymous source; including Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, Konami, Capcom, Warner Bros, Activision, Square Enix, Take Two and Rockstar with Grand Theft Auto ( PS4 port of GTA V maybe?).

Sony’s Virtual Reality project, Project Morpheus will be showcased. The digital rental service PlayStation Now will be re-introduced, big titles will be announced for the Instant Game Collection and PS3 and PS Vita will receive price drops.

There will be a montage for the PS3 and a reveal of a few new titles for it. The PS Vita will also receive a small segment as PS4 is the main attraction. Sevral smaller scale (Most likely indie) digital titles will be shown and the conference will be closed out with, wait for it…. a teaser for a sequel to The Last of Us.

If any of this delicious info holds any weight, then Sony fans are in for a real treat. Here’s hoping its all true, or at least the bit about The Last of Us sequel, Uncharted, God of War 4, The Order: 1886 and PS Now. Those are what I’m most excited for, what about you?

Will Console MMOs Have A Profitable Future On X1 / PS4 ?

MMO-Dudes

This March Sony Online Entertainment will be turning off the servers for Clone Wars Adventures and Free Realms (which also operates on PS3) in a process that SOE calls ‘sunset’ in which the game’s characters will not be kept by long-time subscribers and the online game-world essentially comes to an ending.

With all of the resources it takes to see an MMO run well, it is still sad to see them go for people who might still play. It’s a shame that Free Realms is joining the high list of MMO attempts that have failed to convert a large number of console users. The fate of other console MMO’s coming forth this generation for PlayStation 4 and Xbox ONE include Elder Scrolls Online by Zenimax Online / Bethesda and the PS4 version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn from Square Enix.

A lot has changed since the days of the PS3 MMO attempts and the cancelled Xbox 360 ports such as Champions Online and the Marvel Universe MMO. PlayStation NOW has been announced and the PS4’s streaming / downloading capabilities are more advanced than the PlayStation 3’s ever were. Sony has a higher chance than ever at being able to score reduced fees on MMO experiences through the PlayStation Plus discount service that has grown into a formidable opponent for the Xbox LIVE GOLD package and hopefully Microsoft will be much more helpful with MMO developers / publishers both super-massive like Square Enix or Bethesda and to the more indie-based companies like Digital Extremes who are rumored to be releasing an Xbox ONE version of PS4 / PC co-op game Warframe.

Alongside the news of cancellations (Wizardry Online and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes will also be shut down on July 31, 2014) Sony Online Entertainment is also touting new investments in the MMO world for the PlayStation 4 and Windows PC platforms including of course EverQuest Next, Kingdom Under Fire 2, Planetside 2, Deep Down, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Elder Scrolls Online, and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. A new unannounced MMO game recently was teased by SOE as an upcoming “home” for Star Wars Galaxies fans as well.

Given the history of titles eventually removing online fees (like DC Universe Online did on PS3), when it comes to console MMOs an increased challenge is met by attempting to convince a customer-base used to trade-in offers and game-hopping every year to invest monthly in an MMO separately from what they already pay for a service such as XBL Gold or PS+. This fee system seems to be the main opponent to successful launches on the console platform and Elder Scrolls Online in addition to these other next-gen MMO projects will be an interesting indicator if anything has changed in that regard for PS4 / X1.

PlayStation Now Release Date Leaked

PlayStation NOW Digital Rental

The folks over at Digital Foundry have claimed that they have a copy of what is a pretty legit looking slide out of the Sony PlayStation NOW internally documented slideshow pertaining to the release date of PS Now, the cloud service that will allow PS3 games to be streamed to Bravia TVs, PlayStation 4 consoles, PlayStation 3s, PS Vitas and Tablets. They have also reported that Custom PS3 models with “the equivalent of 8 PS3s on a single motherboard” are being used in Server Cases in order to power the PS Now digital service which will also include digital rentals in some capacity that is not yet entirely known.

PlayStation Now Announced

playstation-now-devices_1269

PlayStation Now is an upcoming service that will use cloud technology powered by Gaikai. Stream games and see trophies across your devices, rent games streaming, etc. PS Now will roll out on PS4, then PS3, then the vita sometime this year. It will also offer live TV, video demand, and some DVR features. Not every game will available to stream and most likely it will require some form of subscription either through PS Plus or a new PS Now subscription.
