343 Industries Teases Unknown “Projects”; Are They Helping Develop Cortana?

Halo 5 Xbox ONE

343 Industries took to their Halo Waypoint blog recently to let the world know that they are facing “both exciting and daunting” work on not only Halo for Xbox ONE and the Halo TV Show being directed by Steven Spielberg but also more unknown “projects” which have yet to be announced in nature. They also congratulated the commemoration of Halo 4 which occurred between the sheets for some of the crew at 343. Could this new tease have something to do with the rumor that Cortana will be the voice of the Xbox ONE and Windows Phone 8 to compete with iPhone’s Siri? Only time will tell. Check out some hilarious and insightful talk from 343 below.

“Last month, Halo 4 turned nine months old. I know this because our studio recently experienced a sizeable baby boom. While I celebrated the launch of the game by hitting the virtual battlefields, several coworkers marked the occasion in a different, yet equally exciting way. Whether we’re talking about my merrymaking or theirs, it’s safe to say numerous bases were penetrated. And successfully, at that.

Game development is a curious thing. You start with an idea, frolic in a dream pasture where anything is possible, adjust accordingly until you’re back in reality, and then work your ass off building, developing and polishing what you hope will eventually become an enjoyable experience. Seeing Halo 4 transform from a small stake in the ground, into what we shipped, and into what it is now has been a fascinating and valuable learning experience, both for me personally, and the studio as a whole.”

Head to the 343 Industries Halo Waypoint posts for info on the upcoming Halo 4 update.

Final Fantasy VII – The Web Series Kickstarter taken down by Square Enix

Near the end of July, a Kickstarter project was launched in an attempt to raise funds for an unofficial Final Fantasy VII live action web series. The ambitious creators wanted to raise a whopping $400,000 for the project. Many fans were really excited to finally see something like this being undertaken but others were skeptical that it could be pulled off. $400,000 is a lot of money. Would Square Enix really allow such a high budget series to be made based on one of their intellectual properties? Series director Gionata Medeot told gaming sites such as Kotaku that he wasn’t worried about Square Enix’s laywers taking the project down.

Well it looks like he should have been a little worried, since the project was officially taken off the Kickstarter website today.  Square Enix sent Kickstarter an official-sounding letter telling them the project was in violation of their copyrighted intellectual property. Prior to being taken down, the project had raised around $25,000. Here is the full text of the letter, as linked on what was previously the project’s Kickstarter page:

Disney Has Disbanded LucasArts, Cancelled Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault (Battlefront 3)

In a stunning report this morning it has come to the light that Disney has laid off all LucasArts employees and cancelled “all current projects” this includes Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault which were highly anticipated titles being regarded as the ultimate comeback for the Star Wars video game titles. The Studio LucasArts has been completely disbanded and any results in attempting to create these games will now be met with licensing fees and entirely different teams making different games. Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault as we know them are now in IP limbo.

We will bring you more updates as the industry reacts to this and ask Star Wars fans to remain hopeful and make your reasonable demands, for these games to be completed, heard by Disney loud and clear in the comments section. We also look forward to seeing what the LucasArts team is capable of creating coming out of this financial disaster and wish them the best finding their new place in the game biz.
