20 new PS4 games this week as PlayStation named #3 most relevant brand in UK

It’s no secret that PlayStation 4 is one of the most successful consoles ever to hit the video games market. With over 82 million units sold as of last month, the PS4 is predicted to surpass the PS3’s life time sales and could even approach the original PlayStation’s sales of 102.5 million units by the time its finished. Of course, the highest selling console of all time is still the PlayStation 2 with over 155 million units sold, which no home console has ever come near.

PlayStation VR has also made incredible strides becoming the highest selling VR headset currently on the market, reaching 3 million units sold as of last month alongside 22 million PSVR games being sold as the platform continues to lead with some of the most well produced Virtual Reality games in existence with no signs of stopping or letting down early adopters of this new technology.

3DS Sells 15 Times As Much As Vita In United States During March 2014

Vita VS 3DS Sales

The NPD numbers for the Nintendo platform were shared by the same source as the original Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes numbers reported on earlier this morning. Happy Easter by the way folks.

Nintendo 3DS continues to dominate the market with its lineup of exclusive content including heavy RPG titles that stick to the main elements of the genre nicely and has sold over 159,000 units during March 2014 in USA. That’s 15.9 times as many Vita’s sold in that same period (10,000 Vita handheld devices were sold during March 2014 in USA). 3DS is dominating the dedicated handheld hardware market and it seems to be on the merit of its games sticking to well known and well loved gameplay mechanics.

The Nintendo Wii U on the other hand has only brought in 70K USA sales in March 2014, with the Wii delivering 28,000 sales despite being effectively discontinued, and the PSP managing to find 5,000 sales somehow.

By comparison, the Xbox ONE moved 311K units in USA during March 2014 with Xbox 360 selling 111K units and PS4 confirmed as the top selling console during the entire month in the country of the United States (which all NPD numbers report for). The PlayStation 4’s lifetime sales are currently over 7 million in total.

Sony And EA Want ‘PlayStation 5’ Release Five Years From Now

For those who think this article is going to head into one particular direction – let me stop you at the gate. Honestly the PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360 generation lasted way too long. And if PC Gaming as well as Console Gaming throughout the past decade and a half has taught you anything it’s that it’s not always easy buying new hardware right when it comes out. That being said, Sony reached some controversy when it announced PS5 (or rather that a fifth PlayStation design (PS5) was being thought of starting around the time of the PS4 Launch). Some want these console generations to go as long as humanly possible, to get the most value out of their machine which whether you’re talking low/mid-range gaming PC or next-generation consoles in their first few years of release – you’re looking at some amount of hundreds of dollars.

Back in the old days it was a little different. The games were so expensive on the cartridge format, and players spent so much time playing through a single title that they would make modern day Achievement hunters look like ‘noobs’ at the game’s they’d ‘100% Completed’. So making available over 3,800 games like PlayStation 2 developers managed to do simply wasn’t necessary (by comparison PlayStation 3 currently has 795 games available and thanks to cloud computing (PlayStation NOW) and digital distribution (PlayStation Network / PlayStation Plus) the PS3 will likely be forwards-compatible with many games that are developed for the PlayStation 4 as a lead platform. This means a level of post-mortem support that game consoles have never seen before, and the Xbox 360 will likely hang around longer than expected this time around due to the presence of their digital Xbox LIVE infrastructure as well.

But for gamers to ask for console manufacturers not to release a ‘PlayStation 5’ or next-next-generation Xbox console is a dangerous and slippery slope in my opinion. By the time 5 years has passed the next-gen consoles we see today will likely have been host to so many optimizations in console game development code, especially as they are now more in-line with PC game development architecture, that they will be in the prime of their lives. At the same time, if you spend double on a PC what you would on a PS4 right now, you’re already there at a higher level of experience (granted you use the right kind of display, and not a television designed for console gaming). Five years from now the PC Gaming sector will be very far advanced beyond console gaming once again and with an increasing embrace to Steam and PC Gaming in general players should expect a ‘PlayStation 5’ – type of system to emerge again with updated specs and renewed focus on emerging network trends from the internet world in order to keep the console experience feeling luxurious.

As I said at the start of the topic, I believe the PS3 / 360 generation lasted way too long. The industry shouldn’t wait that long to refresh, because it holds developers of console games back. The games can’t innovate without the hardware specs increase – not just in terms of graphics, but more importantly gameworld and gameplay elements can be evolved as well. And although this source may be questionable, Electronic Arts EVP Patrick Söderlund seems to agree with the precedent Sony is putting forward with the ‘PlayStation 5”s scheduling, even going as far as to say that the PS3 / 360 generation took too long which is something I’m often lambasted for saying myself due to the bargain effect people seem to be going for with these consoles.

Currently, sales of the PlayStation 4 are skyrocketing (beyond 6 Million and rising), so many may begin to disagree with my notion that Sony is right to aim for a 5 year away ‘PlayStation 5’-style launch. But if their first party studios can manage to produce all of the projects they are currently planning – that’s a lot of incredible gaming material coming down the line including new IPs and existing IPs such as The Order: 1886, a currently untitled Uncharted 4 (in addition to The Last Of Us 2 and a New IP by Naughty Dog), Drive Club, Infamous: Second Son (followed by a New IP by Sucker Punch), a currently untitled Open World RPG by Guerrilla Games, and this is just to name a few coming soon or less soon. Essentially it seems each PS4 first party developer is engaged in at least one existing IP project and one New IP project. Keep in mind there’s also third party exclusives being developed for Xbox ONE and PlayStation 4 this generation such as Dead Rising 3 for XO and Deep Down for PS4 (both published by Capcom).

This generation might be less about entertaining you for another decade and more about packing a punch for what consumers are considering a high asking price to engage in next-generation console gaming. For a final word on the subject from the executive point-of-view, take a look at this Sony UK Interview.

Sony Announces PS4 Global Sales Over 6 Million And Rising

PlayStation 4 - 6 Million Sales

Now that PlayStation 4 has had some time (about a week) to get into the hands of Japanese consumers who only had the console release just now while Americans have had it since the winter of last year. Everyone knows that stocks of PS4 units are selling still, like crazy. As promised, it appears Sony has begun to get a grip on demand by producing as many units as humanly possibly, then calling up aliens and having them produce some as well to make it even more than humanly possible – and the result is a lot of sales.

“PS4 sales cross 6 million globally”

PlayStation 4 has now sold over 6 million lifetime worldwide units, Sony announced on their official website.

There were more announcements as well included in this single statistic.

“As you’ve probably read by now, cumulative PS4 sales have now surpassed six million units worldwide following the successful launch in Japan just over a week ago. It’s truly humbling to see the rate at which gamers across the globe are choosing PS4 as their next gen console of choice. Even more exciting is what happens when gamers power up their PS4s. In the United States, more than 90% of PS4s are online, enabling gamers to connect, compete and share their greatness with friends and fellow gamers.”

Some more fun stats were released with this announcement as well:

  •  “PS4 gamers account for 20% of daily broadcasters on Twitch.”
  •  “100 million shares” (using the DualShock 4 controller’s share button to post pictures, stream live, or post videos to TwitchTV, Facebook, Twitter, and soon more including YouTube)

And another quite intriguing statement was made as well regarding video broadcasting on PS4:

“Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition features a built-in Broadcast+ mode where you can stream your gameplay while viewers on the PS4 or a web browser influence positive and negative effects during gameplay.” – John Koller / VP of Marketing – Home Consoles and Handheld Platforms, SCEA

The Possible Future of Nintendo Is In Question; PS4 Decimates Wii U Sales Pace

Super Mario 3D World - PS4 Bundle

“Nintendo is dead.”

That statements has been spouted more times than it is possible to count since as early as the release of the Sega Master System. And then the Sega Genesis. And the 32X. It got more common with the release of the Sega Saturn and then the PlayStation against the release of the Nintendo 64. It gained a lot more traction with the release of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox against the GameCube. Since then people have been saying that Nintendo should pull out of the console game completely and just make games. Like Sega and Atari did. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata made a statement that releasing their franchises on other systems would be good and profitable for them for the short term but the company would fall afterward. That Nintendo is in the unique position of being the ones that bring people into video gaming, regardless of where they go from there.

So what would happen if Nintendo stops making consoles? I mean seriously. Would you buy a Mario game if it were not on a Nintendo system? A Pikmin game? With all due respect, Sonic is not doing so well these days, though that has more to do with a bad transition from 2D to 3D than a lack of hardware or console-exclusive games. Still, with the exception of The Legend of Zelda franchise and maybe Mario Kart, I can’t imagine Nintendo’s most popular games being as popular on other systems. People tend to talk as though Nintendo is a terrible company now and that they have no good games. If you assume they mean exclusive games (since they have a decent amount of multi-platform games), does that mean that people do not like Nintendo-developed games?

Wii U VS PS4 Sales

In my personal opinion, I only see less popular, less used Nintendo developed or published games thriving on other systems. F-Zero, Metroid, Star Fox. Maybe Fire Emblem. These games fit into the space of the types of games and settings that people like in current times. But games like Kirby, Donkey Kong, Mario Party, Animal Crossing, these games do not really appeal to the larger crowds, at least not in a “Oh I gotta get that” kind of way. It’s more of a “Oh yea I used to play that game” feeling, but that clearly does not lead to game sales. There are a few other games that could be modified to fit in with current standards, like Sin and Punishment and Custom Robo, come to mind. But where does that leave franchises like Punch Out and Golden Sun?

So if Nintendo stopped making consoles and only developed games a la Sega does now, which franchises would you actually support on other consoles? Which series do you think would benefit from a more mainstream makeover? What if Nintendo only stuck with their handheld systems and just dropped out of the console race?
