RGN Podcast: Should Gamers Pre-Order Star Wars: Battlefront & Trust DICE / EA ?

RGN Podcast Aug 9 2013

After the big kick-off with Star Wars Celebration’s Battlefront Reveal and today’s Battlefront Dev Diary many gamers are split into two groups; those who are foaming at the mouth and throwing their money at the screen versus those who are calling foul, b.s., or much less friendly words towards their screens in disbelief and perhaps jaded but justified distrust. In the following RealGamerNewz Podcast we sit down and discuss whether or not gamers should think about pre-ordering the game at this point, which is what EA Games is suggesting everyone get ready to do right now. We also speak about all of the details thus far that are known about the game to be certain, which it turns out is not very much information at this time. DICE and their history developing games is discussed as well as the legacy of the Battlefront series.

In this Podcast we brought on RGN contributors who share differing views but are both determined to eventually play this game to see it for themselves, and we have a peaceful discussion which often breaks down into a debate showing both sides. One thing’s for sure, the pressure is definitely on for DICE and EA to surpass the partially complete, leaked, and cancelled Battlefront III that LucasArts was developing. Take a listen to the show below, do the research yourself, and make up your own mind. Thanks in advance for listening!

iRGN #9: This Generation Of Consoles Needs More Games, Now

iRGN Episode 9 - RealGamerNewz Podcast

In this episode of the iRGN Podcast RealGamerNewz and Shotgun Seat Productions speak on the current generation of consoles and how they are failing to live up to their promises in terms of offering fresh new AAA gaming experiences. Despite the best efforts of development studios under the wing of the majors, the indie scene is outshining the triple A development scene simply due to the amount of half-baked remasters and remakes which aren’t even worthy of the price tag associated with adopting “next-gen” into the home. Perhaps if major console titles weren’t being delayed, publishing firms hadn’t become so comfortable with the unreasonably long life cycle of last-gen, and the very real threat of PC Gaming taking over not been ignored then maybe things wouldn’t be this way. It’s still early in the generation though and there’s still time for things to turn around, which we adamantly hope they will. In the following Video Podcast we discuss ways that can occur and just exactly how we feel about the current environment in the 8th console generation.

Are Video Games Good or Evil?

Video Games Good Or Evil - RealGamerNewz - MrBrodo789

When asking the average person, albeit a parent or middle-aged adult, about video games, most will tell you they are a waste of time and “rot your brain.” Video games have gotten such a huge amount of negative attention over the last couple of decades. They are usually the first thing people point fingers at when a horrible act of violence occurs. It seems as though mainstream media refuses to cover the fact that video games also have many positive effects on a person. So what happens when the positive effects and negative effects are stacked up against each other? The results may seem very surprising, as video games have far more positive effects than negative, and are, in general, good for people.

First, let’s look at why video games are always thought about negatively. It really comes down to lack of responsibility for parents, and looking for something easy to blame. Video games have become a very mainstream form of entertainment over the past fifteen years, with more and more people playing them every year, often young children. Parents are busier than ever, and often use things like video games as a “babysitter.” Then, when their child acts out, they need something to blame. Video games are usually at the brunt of this blame. But this blame is very misplaced. Parents act as if there is no way to keep their children from playing games that might be considered violent. But, in all actuality, there are precautions put in place to prevent kids from playing such games. First, it is illegal for someone under seventeen to go into a store a buy an “M” rated video game. Second, there is a rating on the box that gives a detailed listing of the content in the game. It is a parent’s responsibility to know what kind of content their child is consuming. And when the content is so clearly made apparent, there is no excuse.

M Rating - RealGamerNewz - MrBrodo789

Speaking of kids and video games, what kind of effects do games have on youth? According to Marilyn Price PhD, a speaker in the field of Human and Organization Development, while there “are incidents where socially isolated, unstable teen have committed acts of violence”, studies have shown there are many more good effects of playing video games on young people . First, playing games appears to make kids closer to their families. Kids are also more involved in activities, and better mental health. It doesn’t end there. Video games that show sharing, cooperation, and empathy help children develop these traits (Price).

These aren’t the only positive effects that playing video games has. A study by the Max Planck Institute for Human development also found many positive effects from playing video games. In this study, they had adults play Super Mario 64. They played for 30 minutes a day for two months. After testing time was complete, they found that playing games “showed increases of grey matter, in which the cell bodies of the nerve cells of the brain are situated.” This can have a positive effect on your brains spatial orientation, memory formation, and strategic planning, and fine motor skills, according to the study (qtd. in Dyer).

The American Psychological Association has also found many positive effects on the brain from playing video games. First, it was found that people who play first person shooters had “faster and more accurate attention to allocation, higher spatial resolution in visual processing, and enhanced mental rotation abilities.” These skills are said to be the same developed when taking formal courses that teach them. Next, it showed that gamers show less activity in their brains when problem solving, which means they use neural resources more efficiently. Evidence also showed that video games helps increase creativity (qtd. in Shapiro).

What about video games effects on emotion? This is another field in which video games can have a very positive effect. If someone is feeling angry, or stressed, they know that a video game is a safe environment to let out all of that anger or stress. They can do this without effecting anyone else, or causing any harm to anybody or anything. Learning the rules of a video game, and then overcoming challenges within those set rules, also has a positive effect on a gamers emotions. It gives them a sense of accomplishment, and can even make them feel better about themselves.

Video Game Emotion - RealGamerNewz - MrBrodo789

According to the American Psychological Association, video games also help people become more social. People often believe the stereotype that gamers are nerdy, social rejects. But with so many of today’s games being online, people are encouraged to speak to their teammates and work together. The APA states that “70% of gamers play their games with a friend, either cooperatively or competitively.” This can also help promote teamwork, as gamers often have a common objective they are working towards. It has even been shown that these cooperative traits translate from gaming to real life (qtd. in Shapiro).

The biggest argument against video games is that they cause violence. According to a study by Christopher Ferguson at Texas A&M University, “no link between violent game play and actual overt violent of aggressive behavior” could be found. The study took 302 youths from ages 10-14. 75% of them said they played games regularly, with 40% of those being violent games. Out of all of the kids, only 7.3% had actually been involved in some sort of violent crime, albeit assault of theft. The results showed that depressive symptoms played a very large role in violent behavior. It was concluded that violent video games were not a predictor for violence (qtd. in “New Study..”).

The biggest problem with blaming violence on violent video games is that almost everyone plays them. Video games are the fastest growing form of entertainment today, and may soon overtake movies as far as popularity goes. It is hard to lay the blame for violence on something that is so common is everyday life. Not to mention, but the crime rate has actually fallen more and more as video games have become more popular.

Video games have also been shown to be a strong educational tool, mainly in a historic sense. Game like the Assassins Creed series, while putting its own spin on things, delves into many historic events, and often involves many famous historical figures. Not only this, but it can also help people develop foreign languages. Assassins Creed, once again, is a perfect example of this. Instead of going full out with Italian, it drops an Italian word every now and then in the middle of an English sentence. This allows the gamer to use context clues to figure out what certain words mean, instead of trying to learn it all at once.

Video Game Education - RealGamerNewz - MrBrodo789

Gaming has also been found to be a good alternative to sports when it comes to developing hand-eye coordination, according to Deakin University in Australia. Preschoolers who play interactive games, such as the Wii, were found to be better at skill such as “kicking, catching, or throwing a ball (qtd. in Weber).”

According to Lisa Weber, video games “force kids to think quickly.” Video games present people with a problem that needs to be solved, usually “very quickly.” This helps kids develop critical thinking, and forces them to test out “different solutions” to every problem (Weber).

While video games have all of these positive effects, there can also be some bad things that come along with being an avid gamer. The most obvious is weight gain. Some gamers gain a considerable amount of weight, more and more the longer they play. But this can’t be blamed on the video games their selves. A person should be able to have some sort of self-control, and be able to realize that they have a problem, and do something about it. If the case of a child gaining weight, they do not realize the consequences of gaining weight. Therefore, it is up to the parents to realize their kid has a problem, and to do something about it.

Even though there are some health problem that can come with playing games, the positive effects of gaming greatly outweigh any negative effects. The general negativity that surrounds video games all stems from people refusing to educate themselves. They only see one side to the subject, and that is what mainstream media presents to them on TV. As someone who avidly keeps up with studies about the effects of gaming, it is clear that the positives outweigh the negatives. People need to realize this, and start embracing video games for what they are: an art form, and a mainstream way to consume entertainment. The sooner people do this, the sooner they can start looking at the real things that cause violence, or have a negative impact on society in general. Until that time, video games will continue to unfairly be a scapegoat for things it has nothing to do with.

Creative Vision Behind Star Wars 1313 To Live On Through Amy Hennig / Visceral Games?

Star Wars 1313 Fan Art

Uncharted series Writer and ex-Naughty Dog Creative Director Amy Hennig (who switched over to the dark side peacefully in a recent job change) will be creating a new Star Wars game with Visceral Games under the EA Games label for new rights owner Disney who will lay the responsibility of a new Star Wars Battlefront among other upcoming products upon publisher EA Games and some of their development studios including DICE (who are working on the next Battlefront game).

But what exactly are Amy Hennig and Visceral Games up to in the long term?

Reports are hitting today (mainly based on job listings) that put Amy Hennig in the spotlight again and claim that the project she is working on for the Star Wars universe will have extremely high fidelity graphics and a cinematic action blend of gameplay that many expect to resemble the Uncharted series in its fluidity from moment to moment as well as dynamic levels. Some of you may remember an RGN Podcast Discussing SW1313’s Indefinite Hold Situation. There has been a petition going on Change.org for EA and Disney to finish Star Wars 1313 (Over 8,200 signatures at the time of this writing).

For those who are having a hard time seeing significance in whether or not Amy Hennig / Visceral Games are working on Star Wars 1313 or a new game based on that, keep in mind that the same technology behind the cinematic feel of the unfinished Star Wars 1313 project is advanced and being used in future films. Before the LucasArts closure, the game was shown with a few small but effective scenes that were completely fleshed out and actually existed in final product build quality.

Take a look at the video below, and get hype. This Rumor seems like the best possible scenario, but in the least we can say that the teams working on Star Wars games for EA, Disney, and the fans will be surely influenced by the Star Wars 1313 project and what it represented to gamers.

Rumor: PS4 Will Soon Play PS1/PS2 Games At 1080P HD Resolution

PS4

A trusted industry source which has been responsible for some recent leaks that proved to stand true by the name of Ahsan Rasheed (feel free to Google his track record) has delivered some new info today about Sony’s plans for adding backwards-compatible support to the PlayStation 4 through PS Now as well as local support for 1080P High Definition rendering “for select titles”.

The Virtual Reality headset that PS4 that we spoke about live on the air with our source from the development community broadcasting with us on the RGN Podcast back in December 2013 (which was later officially announced by Sony at GDC 2014 (HD Presentation recently released by Sony here for those who didn’t attend). This device is called Project Morpheus at this moment in time (though that could change later) and Ahsan Rasheed also states that developers believe this is the device that will finally bring Virtual Reality Gaming to the forefront of the video games industry, with time of course.

Developers are very much interested in this device and companies are likely getting involved in deals now to showcase the hardware in-store for consumers in the near future. The device will definitely be getting a lot more hands-on demo access at future Press Events such as E3 as well.

PS4 Virtual Reality Morpheus PlayStation Headset

This all of course is a no-brainer after Facebook bought Oculus Rift causing Developer Distrust in the device from Minecraft Creator Notch.

Perhaps most shocking is that PS1 games and PS2 games will work on PS4 with 1080P HD for select titles as mentioned above, but the overall viewpoint of the company can be seen now with PS Now being launched sooner rather than later (hopefully) and a huge focus on customer feedback being at the top of Sony’s strategy this generation. They appear to want to give gamers exactly what they want, if at all possible, and hopefully will be able to announce some very rare and unexpected exclusive games for the PS4 console that gamers never thought would ever become possible or happen in their lifetime. Of course this refers to the PlayStation team’s list of essential fantasy games that fans have been compiling including projects like Shenmue III.

PlayStation Plus will also be receiving a new exclusive feature soon.

PlayStation Plus PS4

In addition to all of this leaked information, likely to be officially confirmed soon – Blu Ray and Media support will be increased for the PS4 soon beyond the already known about MP3 support which is incoming for in-game use. There will also be game content for popular mainstream titles that will only appear on the PS4 versions of games (exactly which titles and content has not yet been revealed by this source).

Stay tuned to RealGamerNewz as we attempt to keep up with this incredibly fast paced industry and all of its mysteries. As always, feel free to ask questions by contacting us or hitting the comments section below and we’ll do our best to factor in your input for further statements.

PSA: Respawn Entertainment Is Unwilling To Deny A Season Pass For Titanfall Will Exist

Titanfall Season Pass - Xbox ONE - Windows PC - RealGamerNewz

**Update: Some publications are now suggesting that Respawn Entertainment views a Season Pass as “unlikely”, though no further official word has been announced just yet in addition to the original story below:

Some confusion was cleared up today as major video games news and reviews publication Gamespot noticed and reported on this tweet below from Respawn Entertainment (the developers of Titanfall) a couple of days ago:

However, Respawn Entertainment reacted to the article from Gamespot today by retracting the statement made by their social networking account. Here is their final statement on the matter as of today February 28, 2014:

Basically Titanfall won’t charge players for an Online Pass if they purchase a used disc version of the game on Xbox platforms. However, there is probably still going to be a stream of paid DLC content such as maps as well as a Season Pass to effectively pre-order a chunk (or all) of it at once. This is nothing new for the first person shooter genre, but with Titanfall being essentially labelled as a “multiplayer only” game despite claims of merging the co-op, single player narrative, and competitive experiences together some players are re-evaluating their purchase.

If the game debuts for the full $59.99 many players will expect at least some amount of free DLC to release before the stream of paid DLC begins. I believe this is something that EA Games and Respawn Entertainment probably realize by now since they are not offering a single player campaign. So far everybody at the RGN staff who has played the game with their own two hands (those who do and those who do not own Xbox machines) have found the experience very enjoyable.

This situation is another one of those, “fire the intern”  slip-ups where for all intensive purposes the public appearance is being given that whoever sent that original tweet Gamespot picked up was acting without the latest information available on the subject. One other issue with the PR campaign being run for Titanfall is also the fact that a PS4 version is already being talked about for the sequel of a game which hasn’t even come out yet. Regardless of how people feel about the game going multi-plat on consoles or not, this is not the time to talk about part two of a New IP that we haven’t even gotten to play the final build of yet. It seems based on the way that the Xbox deal was revealed for Titanfall that EA Games is forcing a lot of marketing and PR tactics on Respawn Entertainment right now – we hope this developer and publisher get a little more in sync with each other as the future of this franchise moves forward.

Gears of War Xbox ONE Possibilities – GoW 4… Or Something Else?

gears of war xbox one

Something that many Gears fans might not know is that in all actuality, the humans in the Gears Of War franchise are considered to be “the bad guys” by the majority of beings found in the game. This is shown after they’ve destroyed everything, at the end of Gears 3, and the Locust Queen basically calls all of mankind ‘villains’ while providing some supportive reasons as to why. Personally, I don’t think Marcus and the crew are exactly “bad”, but the majority of the human race? Yes, for sure.

Now a new Gears Of War is headed our way as Microsoft has acquired the rights to the franchise and plan to do something with it for their next-generation Xbox ONE console. A year after the Locust came up, 90% of the planet was destroyed and 80% of the human population destroyed even themselves, which explains all the dust people and why some view the humans as savage and irrational. The COG also knew the locust were going to invade for years because of the lambent, but this destruction came from their own technology.

Gears of War: Judgment’s story is Baird’s own personal story, it’s not the big picture as shown in the trilogy. Gears Of War on Xbox ONE could potentially explore the possibility that the Locust are not really good guys, they captured humans, beat them, raped them, ate them, and more. But they aren’t totally in the wrong either; the humans are really bad to each other and other species as well. So it’s like two dirt bag species just fighting each other without much gain on either end, just destruction for all. Eventually this has to be explained in the franchise, or come to a point where things boil over – or even less likely, change.

Gears Of War 4 Xbone

Halo is kind of like that too in some ways, and this has been addressed in their plot lines throughout the series as well. This series could end up being used as a guide for how to create the Xbox ONE plot lines for the Gears Of War games coming up, either way there are definitely lessons to learn from how Bungie and 343i handled things.

In Halo 4 the Didact hates humans for many reasons and wants to enslave them all and turn them into his Promethean knights. Master Chief stops him because – let’s be honest he doesn’t do anything else. When you really think about it, Master Chief is an extremely flawed character who was captured by the human government, tortured, turned into a super human through agonizing treatments, brainwashed to be a sociopath and psychopath killing machine (sound familiar), and then finally gains feelings at the end of Halo 4 for Cortana but doesn’t understand them

Humans in Halo after Halo 3 are becoming more like humans in Gears; arrogant and cruel. One big conflict (the Covenant) brought them together for a while but the writing on the wall spells out ‘it won’t last forever’.

Gears Of War on Xbox ONE could possibly be a legit and essential Gears Of War 4 entry in the series. Due to a character in Gears 3 called Aaron Griffon, a former billionaire who made his money off of the same stuff that made everyone lambent, having created his own small society when Marcus and crew showed up then they all died. Aaron obviously hated the COG for what they did to the planet. He told Fenix they would settle this again someday and flipped him off. He said no matter where the COG go and what they do the leave a trail of death.

All of this gives plenty of motive for this character to possibly become either a new villain for the series or a rebel hero archetype, as well as provide enough exhilarating events to propel the series forward beyond the so-called end that players were prevented with in GoW 3. Some Locust may have survived the extinction event that was caused at the end of Gears 3, but if Locust is exclusively what GoW 4 has to offer we could all end up very disappointed. It seems that past themes and influences will be in place but as a background fixture to keep the core essence of the franchise alive. The other possibility is that Microsoft and their development studio could go the Prequel route with a game about the war before E-day, or even another event during the COG War possibly providing an open world / MMO style of game pitting players as Locust and COG.

Everything remains to be seen, and feel free to voice your opinions / predictions / fan requests for the game companies developing the next Gears Of War games to consider.
