SOMA Dev Reveals Sales Statistics and New Accolade Trailer

SOMFace

Frictional Games’ sci-fi horror game SOMA, released just 10 days ago to universal acclaim. The developer saw it fitting to release a brand new trailer celebrating the game’s praise and highlighting some of the terrors that await those who yet to take the plunge. A new blog post reveals many details about the game, including just how well it fared commercially.

After its first week SOMA has sold 92,000 copies across all platforms, compared to one of Frictional’s previous titles Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which sold 30,000 in the first month (around 20,000 the first week).

“The money that we’ve got from this will pretty much pay our company expenses for another 2 years. Sales are still going pretty strongly too, with a total of around 2,000 copies sold per day.”

The studio’s goal for SOMA was for it to reach 100,000 units sold after the first month. It seems they’ll have no trouble achieving it but they’re still far from recouping all of their expenses.

“We need to sell almost 3 times that amount to do that. But given that it took us 5 years to make the project, there’s no immediate stress to do so. One of the great things about funding SOMA 100% ourselves is that all money earned goes into our own pockets and is directly used to fund our upcoming projects. So we are under no pressure to recoup immediately so long as we get enough to keep going – which we certainly have now.”

SOMA gets a Creepy Launch Trailer, Releasing Today

SOMA_Screen (1)

The highly anticipated sci-fi horror game from the studio behind the Amnesia and Penumbra series, is available today for PS4 and PC. To celebrate its release, Frictional Games has released a brand trailer featuring more of SOMA’s terrifying underwater environment and creepy atmosphere.

Creative Director Thomas Grip, reflect’s on the game’s development:

“Five years ago, SOMA started as a simple idea; to make a game that would explore the more disturbing aspects of what it means to be a conscious being. Since then, we have gone through years of iterations, lots of hard work and almost tripled the size of our team. And finally, today, the game is done. We are very proud of how it has turned out, and feel that we have achieved what we set out to do. It has easily been the most ambitious project we have undertaken, and getting to this point has been quite a struggle. We hope people find SOMA to be a creepy and provocative experience that stays with them long after playing.”

SOMA  is available for $29.99 on PS4 via the PlayStation Store, and for PC (Windows/Mac/Linux) via digital distributors including Steam, GOG.com, and Humble Store.

soma-3

Frictional Games’ soon to be released sci-fi horror title, SOMA, has received yet another creepy trailer. The focus this time around, is on the dangerous creatures that the player will have to either run or hide from if they hope to escape PATHOS-II.

I wonder if there is a cry like a baby until some comes along and saves me option?

“The radio is dead, food is running out, and the machines have started to think they are people. Underwater facility PATHOS-II has suffered an intolerable isolation and we’re going to have to make some tough decisions. What can be done? What makes sense? What is left to fight for?”

Probably not.

SOMA releases on September 22, for PC and PS4.
