Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare – Outbreak Exo Zombies / Havoc DLC Xbox Review

Call of Duty Exo Zombies RealGamerNewz Review Outbreak Havoc DLC 1

Xbox One Exclusive: At this time no other platforms DLC release date are confirmed. If you haven’t already, go check out our CoD:AW Review to get a feel for where we rank the game overall in the franchise and genre at large. Outbreak is perhaps the most unexpected and now talked about piece of the Havoc DLC, so that’s what this Review will mainly focus around. It is unclear at this time how many new Zombies maps will be released by Sledgehammer Games and High Moon Studios in total – so keep that in mind. That being said, so far their work is impressive.

Outbreak is the first installment in a new mode called Exo Zombies debuting for the first time in the Call of Duty series. This mode combines the Exo Suit abilities of Advanced Warfare while at the same time borrowing a lot of classic gameplay principles from the Zombies modes seen in previous games (World at War, Black Ops, and Black Ops II distinctively). Surprisingly the end result is more fun and enjoyable than expected, even right from the start. Sledgehammer + High Moon take some influence from the co-op survival mode Extinction created in Call of Duty: Ghosts by NeverSoft and grabbed the best of what that mode had to offer in terms of action-based, pick up and play feel. There are a few things that have been dropped from the traditional zombies experience including the need to repair windows. This act of boarding up windows had become a bit overly repetitive in the Zombies series as it were, and now players don’t need to board up windows but can get security such as lasers, turrets, drones, traps, decoys, grenades, as well as many new forms of defense both automated and manual.

The ease of gaining weapon access and upgrading weapons compared to previous Zombies installments is another welcomed change to the formula as Sledgehammer + High Moon’s first excellent entry in the Exo Zombies DLC series begins. Double jumping in the Exo Suit adds another aspect to Zombies as well and players can feel more ready than ever to adapt to it thanks to Destiny. Few games do control set crossovers so well, but the Exo Suit definitely pulls this off.

This game takes more action based team work rather than puzzle based exploration, pitting players up against an ever increasing set of enemies that seem to take graphic design cues from heavyweights in the survival genre like Resident Evil. This is a very appropriate theme and I’m glad Activision gave the green light for something so dark and satisfying from Sledgehammer Games and High Moon Studios. I’ll admit, I initially had reservations as to whether or not they could do an entertaining zombies mode – but they’ve delivered fun gameplay ten fold to answer that challenge.

Air drops with security drones, ammo, camo, credit from ATM’s for running around the map and keeping a perimeter, getting a good gun quickly, upgrading it multiple times with ease, and getting infected then cured or dying are just a few of the experiences you can expect per second as 60 frames per second hit you on the Xbox ONE Call of Duty Zombies experience that is Advanced Warfare Havoc’s Outbreak Exo Zombies map. This is a straight forward approach to Zombies with less jumping through hoops and more getting into the meat of the action with friends. A couple of decent players who know what they are doing can hold an entire team at least several rounds in until deeper strategy is accomplished by said team – meaning this is a fun pick up and play experience even if you haven’t learned the map yet.

Advanced types of Zombies as players go further and further push the line forward for romanticizing the dark demonic look Activision is getting away with here. We love it. To keep up with increasing zombie health and difficulty players must maintain upgrades as before but now it feels much more balanced and ideal plus a different looking, different acting breed of Zombie every once in a while doesn’t hurt. For people who may have got bored too quickly with the sheer difficulty and a-typical logic puzzle / strategy aspects of past Zombies entries, this new Exo Zombies is definitely going to be more enjoyable for you. For those who loved the never-ending upgrades and murdering Zombies with long-form strategy, there’s none of that missing here – it’s just Easter Eggs aren’t part of the main requirement to play anymore, they’re actually Easter Eggs.

exo-zombies-havoc-trailer

exo-zombie-casting

Lilith is the best playable character by far with the quickest speed, and is played by Hollywood personality Rose McGowan. Every character is pretty interesting in their own way though and has some often hilarious and colorful dialogue, so hearing things like “I fu%&ng hate ATLAS Corporation”, dropping F – bombs, or yelling out “F@&k You!” after rage killing a nearly triumphant horde of Zombies. The top quality acting from its cast makes the game more cinematic and the overall experience maintains immersion because of this.

Many Power-ups and pick-ups exist in the game including but not limited to the DNA Bomb, Full Reload, Rocket Assault Drone, Power Surge (when everything in the game becomes 10 credits, any weapon, anywhere, even mystery boxes), and more. When you open up new areas Zombies find new ways to show up, even though a new round hasn’t even started yet. This keeps even veterans on their toes as they feel its safe, leave a crawler, and run deeper within the map for resource gathering purposes. You still have to pay to open up doors, and exactly which doors you choose to open will dramatically change how many rounds your team survives.

As usual, getting multi-kills, headshots, and using the pistol / stabbing combination early on are essential strategies to starting off with maximum efficiency and the best chance of going the distance. Every few rounds there’s a dog zombies round. Zombies who will bite players and infect them happen every few rounds as well. If this happens to you, get to the Decontamination Pad within 60 seconds to heal or you’re dead. Extra credits for killing zombies w/ Melee, DNA Bomb, headshots, or explosives, especially in combination for multi-kills, are non-stop incentives to the fast paced action.

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Exo Zombies Xbox One

As for the deeper strategy breakdown within Outbreak, one player gets a hold of the Nano Machine bubble putting Zombies into slow motion and damaging them while another gets the Drones and decoys them at the same time forcing all of the Zombies to be attracted into this bubble area damage effect while all four players focus LMG (Light Machine Gun) gunfire onto them. All four players should take advantage of reduced pricing from Power Surge when needed in order to quickly gain access to and upgrade weapons of choice.

Pro Tip: Do NOT Open the Administration Wing door with the containment pad on the other side of it if you want to attempt the more straightforward logical strategies most players are familiar with. That means, get on the mic and tell everybody else not to open the door as well. This door actually ends up being the sweet spot and safe zone complete with cure to infection, weapon upgrade, and if not opened this door servers as the only wall and barrier blocking what otherwise becomes a never-ending barrage of Zombies coming up from your team’s behind.

Upgrading weapons over and over is of course the only way to deal with the escalation of Zombie intensity through later rounds. Each upgrade is costly though at 2,500 each. It’s best to get LMG’s or weapons of choice using the Mystery Box (AKA 3D Printer) before upgrading, and also to do the upgrade when out of ammo so it serves as killing two birds with one stone. That being said, it’s even better to wait it out and accomplish grabbing the Full Reload pick-up bonus for the entire team and doing the majority of weapon purchasing / upgrading during Power Surge (similar to Fire Sale from old Zombies modes) that way optimal spending can commence. Use the free ammo and reloading that the game gives you as much as possible and spend on getting the team into proper roles fully geared up that way when the round is over 30 before you know it – everyone is prepared to tough it out for many more rounds in this one spot. It’s unclear what round this spot will be good to, feel free to comment below if you’ve been playing it and have gotten very high.

Havoc-DLC-pack
Of course, Outbreak is only one part of the Havoc DLC offered for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and while we decided to focus the majority of this 1500 word Review on Outbreak we would be remiss to not mention the additional features of the Havoc DLC pack Available Now on Xbox One.

ALL Included in Havoc DLC Pack:

Co-op Exo Zombies Mode & 1st Map:

  • Outbreak (Starring Rose McGowan, Bill Paxton, John Malkovich, and John Bernthal.)

Competitive Multiplayer Maps:

  • Urban
  • Sideshow
  • Core
  • Drift

New Weapons:

  • Including the AE4 Widowmaker (AE4 controlled energy assault rifle)

Final Verdict:

Ascendance, Supremacy, and Reckoning are still coming to Xbox One first, and this Havoc DLC will eventually be made available for PlayStation and PC platforms, but if you’re fortunate enough to be playing Outbreak on your Xbox One copy of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare right now you know what I’m about to say. Sledgehammer Games and High Moon Studios have redefined Zombies in a great way. Four multiplayer maps plus new weapons and a masterpiece entry into the Zombies legacy makes for a totally solid value proposition. We hope to see the franchise continue to take this gameplay direction in DLC as well as full games. Our only worry is that this game will mainly be purchased to play this new form of Zombies and there could only end up being 4 maps total created for it. This seems like a problem and admittedly hurt the score a bit of an otherwise great experience, and while we wish Advanced Warfare included more Zombies maps in either the original Advanced Warfare or in these DLC packs, we are still happy to be fortunate enough to experience this creation and compel others to try the same. I applaud Activision for funding titles that are becoming more and more fun with less emphasis on the meticulous parts of play and more on the reward of teamwork and elite success through firepower.

Omerta: City of Gangsters Steam Review

Omerta City of Gangsters Review - RealGamerNewz

Omerta means code of silence, and that’s something that everyone should keep in mind here in Atlantic City where bottles get crushed and fools get poked. In Omerta: City of Gangsters players run through Absecon Beach, Illinois Ave, Maine Ave, Virginia Ave, North Carolina Ave, or Downtown Atlantic City. Choose your character from a series of mob personalities that would probably be called wise guys in their time. Select their stats based on their nickname around the hood growing up, whether it’s something like “Earful, Berries, or Hood”, and proceed. Answer a series of questionnaires that will define you as a person and then select how much gang violence you would like to be taking place around you (and towards you), then finally gameplay begins.

A top down view of the area you hope to one day control appears. Players can hire and fire a setting-appropriate cast of characters including Ma’ Evans, Big Man, Wolf, Dandy, Happy, Fishman, Squigs, Loony, and more. Ah, who could forget good old Squigs, a true right hand man. He would gut a man for me at just $15 a day and I wouldn’t hesitate to fire him if he told an unfunny joke. Quickly it becomes obvious that this title is more about strategy than actual mafia life. What a funny way to approach an economic simulator I thought to myself. Well, okay. I’ve enjoyed some of those in my day and actually think it’s a pretty cool way to present one. So is it actually any good?

Omerta City of Gangsters Review - RealGamerNewz 2

After amassing a full crew, upgrading my hideout and extorting a few local spots I came to realize that Omerta isn’t completely terrible. Members of your crew can be zoomed in on and observed making their daily rounds as dirty money and clean money are both earned (and kept separately of course), daily salaries to your thugs are paid out, liquor is acquired, and the business expands.

Players start out with their main man as a Level 1 Mastermind while other characters in their gang are somewhat expendable and have their own purpose such as Enforcing, Burglary, helping with Mastermind duties, Grifting, and more. Each character gets their own stats, equipment, perks, and talents which are advanced as things continue. Not only do players focus on getting them to accomplish earning for the great good of the mob they control, but they also have to think about the well-being of each individual by tracking any persistent wounds. After all, you’re only as strong as your weakest link.

Deals can be made with other gangsters who got what you want, or want what you need to get rid of. Money talks and, well you know what walks already don’t you. After all, it’s 2014 but after a few hours of sensual jazz pumped into your ear Omerta: City of Gangster’s soundtrack has you feeling alright with a trip down memory lane (that is memories from your past life). Some of these deals come with a catch of course, it’s not all fun and games in the life of crime. You can pay to increase your reputation in the streets, pay for guns, and even pay later for money given to you now. But when deals go sour, that’s when things really get interesting.

Omerta City of Gangsters Review - RealGamerNewz 3

Crooked Deals offer players a way to test the mettle of their gang’s members by pitting them in sticky situations where shots fire and not everyone gets to go home unharmed. Maybe things will be easier when we’re all microchipped and vaccinated by those micro-machines in The Matrix films, but back in the dirty days of booze and fedoras, hot lead answered the questions of justice.

A strategic economic simulation turns into a turn-based shootout when deals go crooked and it really feels awesome to take part in it. Send out some of your men and control their every action from using a first aid if wounded to which types of shots to fire at their enemies. That being said, the weapons of Omerta range from baseball bats to samurai swords, rifles, pistols, tommy guns, and more. Players have to get a grip on what each character’s role is in the fight and respond accordingly while moving from cover to cover, or risk having their salary-earning hustlers become victims to the ginsu. After seeing war in the street crew members level up and can gain bonuses that are tailored to their particular skill-set (or however you please if that’s not the case).

Omerta City of Gangsters Review - RealGamerNewz 4

As the game advances further from early beginnings to more complex mafia management, jobs and killing becomes routine. Heists, shoot-outs, dirty cops, and drunk damsels trying to get out of paying for their booze become commonplace. Jazz is replaced by Swing and some great things begin to happen. The local area you run is transformed and citizens feel happier for having you around, at least they better be – why I oughtta… Keeping track of how much is coming in, how much is going out, how much is clean, and how much is dirty are always challenges but can become normal to the brain of an economic strategist. When all else fails, let your enemies know its time to get hit, get shot, and get sliced. Everyone’s a haggler though, and even regular customers try to pull a fast one on you. Respect is just a fickle thing I guess.

Players establish more and more of a Mafia presence in their area by establishing Breweries, additional Safe Houses, Hidden Storage locations, Smuggler spots, Boxing Arenas, Private Investigation rings, Soup Kitchens, Distilleries, Accountant firms, Counterfeiters, Wholesale warehouses, Labor Unions, and all while keeping enemy gangs at bay. Once vehicles and guns are plentiful though a few drive-bys are definitely in order for assisting in this task. Goons can also be hired for stand up security keeping your each of your joints clear of issues. An informant can be sent around town to hear about even more opportunities you haven’t gotten to yet. Sometimes when the heat gets too heavy, Investigators snoop around and need to be bribed or otherwise dealt with. There are often multiple ways to deal with a situation, whether its getting information from the neighborhood gossip corner or murdering the competition. Shots ring out in the middle of the night and nobody seems to care or question why. That’s life in the fast lane.

Final Verdict:

I’ll take Omerta: City of Gangsters over SimCity any day. Taking things into your own hands when deals go crooked feels great, and there’s so much to do in a corrupt and fun city full of violence and economic potential that it’s hard to stop playing once you start. A few ways the game could be improved include a better looking and slightly more intuitive user interface (though what is presented is not too bad), as well as a more exciting and reasonable introductory experience to the game. The campaign is dull and players will likely favor simply playing through their own way instead of the arbitrary goals that are handed down. It sure would be nice if the Multiplayer had managed to keep its player base too. But there’s not too much to complain about overall though, since Sandbox mode is awesome, and we highly recommend this simulation title to everyone in the gaming community.

If You Like RPG Card Games, You MUST WATCH Conquest of Champions’ New Trailer

Conquest of Champions

Behold my minions, a new role playing game card game unlike most others. A strategic, chess-board style battlefield is combined with decks of cards that give players a brand new spin on the genre that’s been booming since the advent of digital MTG games as well as Blizzard’s foray into the subject. This game though, is pretty much everything I ever wanted in an RPG card game. Visual representation of the cool stuff the cards say on them, something tangible to track progress of on-screen, and actual gameplay (not just cards).

Unlike a lot of Steam games that have come out lately, this one seems like an honest attempt at good gameplay rather than a cash-in on existing market trends. That alone is worth giving its Beta a try. Honestly, I’m stumbling over myself trying to explain this one, JUST WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW!

Over 9000 Zombies (Steam Early Access) Hands-On Preview

Over 9000 Zombies Preview RealGamerNewz

Build tons of turrets and stand your ground as zombie hordes attack wave by wave. Random populations of zombies are ever present as well. Day turns to night, and bullets turn to grenades, pistols turn to sub machine guns and assault rifles as battle turns to war against the undead.

Graphic style reminds us of the old days in gaming and likely plays a key role in allowing so much action to go on-screen at once in this open world survival with building elements. Detailed settings as well like Game Pad Deadzone and Frames Per Second Indicator come in handy for veterans of the PC Gaming world to get the most out of this current version 0.1.4.1 which is available on Early Access as of yesterday.

This game presents some core principles that we all love as gamers: retro graphics, nonstop action, and shooting zombies. I built a dozen turrets, survived 4 days of the zombie apocalypse, and did my part by earning 6,106 kills including sending President Thomas Jefferson back to the grave (may his soul rest in peace). Over 9,000 Zombies is ridiculously cool once players get into a groove and start building up some sort of base. It was a bit strange to see at full resolution and operate controls-wise as far as how to actually build but once figured out this flowed mid-battle pretty smooth.

Unfortunately, enemy zombies sometimes spawned right under players making it hard to stop and let your turrets do the work but somewhat adding to the nonstop emphasis on survival. Tossing grenades ahead of you and making sure to equip the latest gun are huge tools to your survival. In addition to building a variety of turrets including ooooo, ooo, ooo, oooo, oooo players get pick-ups like Health, Rapid Fire, and Scrap Metal to make your turrets out of. every so often from downed zombies. One improvement that could be made to the game would be an increased ability to see when players are taking damage as well as which direction this is happening from. Focus of a high magnitude is required to get anywhere in Over 9,000 Zombies – and after playing for such a decent amount of time it is unfortunate for a session to end so abruptly and without much warning.

In conclusion, Over 9,000 Zombies! is another excellent, gameplay-centric title for the Steam Early Access platform which feels awesome and fun on a controller and allows for a truly roguelike / survival action title made in 2D evolve into a complete shoot-em-up experience revolving around exterminating the undead while listening to a great soundtrack and trying not to blink.
