The Elder Scrolls Online still features a Subscription Model

29912_screen_the_elder_scrolls_online_tamriel_unlimited_7

Many Elder Scrolls fans on consoles were delighted to hear that Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited would be dropping the MMO subscription model. This means that they don’t have to pay a monthly fee — on top of already paying full price for the game, in order to keep playing. While it doesn’t seem to be an issue with many PC gamers, PlayStation and Xbox owners have to subscribe to PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold if they want to play most game’s online, so their excitement over the matter is understandable.

It turns of the game still has a subscription model after all, at least where its DLC is concerned. Elder Scrolls Online features a service called ESO Plus, which functions similarly to Sony’s PlayStation Plus.

“ESO Plus is our premium membership service. Sign up now to receive in-game benefits that let you get the most out of your journeys in Tamriel. Members receive increased experience, faster crafting progression, and bonus gold along with access to all available DLC Game Packs and a monthly allotment of 1500 Crowns (total membership amount of crowns given at time of purchase) to spend in the in-game store on pets, mounts, costumes, and much more. ESO Plus is the best way to see everything ESO has to offer! Please note that access to DLC Game Packs granted by ESO Plus is only available while your membership remains active.”

That last sentence is a real kicker. Unlike Season Passes which ask for a one time payment in order to access downloadable content for a discounted price, ESO Plus requires players to pay $15 every month, otherwise they won’t be able to play whatever DLC they own. Also there doesn’t seem to be any indication of any DLC being released separately, meaning the Plus service will be your only means of acquiring on extra content.

Keep in mind it is optional and there is still the base game, which can be played without having to subscribe. Still, I can’t imagine this will sit well with many of the fans.

How do you feel about DLC being locked behind a subscription fee? Will you skip Elder Scrolls Online’s bonus content, or will you avoid the game completely? Sound off.

PS+ Not Required for The Elder Scrolls Online, But XBL Gold Is…

the_elder_scrolls_online_wallpaper_2-1440x900

With older fears of massive fees stacked upon fees for upcoming next-generation massively multiplayer role playing game The Elder Scrolls Online, Bethesda decided to clarify some details regarding pricing on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox ONE versions of the game. PS+ is not required for Elder Scrolls Online on PlayStation 4, but XBL Gold is required to play ESO on Xbox ONE. This probably comes as a small consequence to many players who were planning on having PS+ / XBL Gold anyways for their own various benefits, but definitely adds a benefit to the PS4 for being open to this pro-consumer practice. Of course most people on PS4 will want PS+, but this gives a window of time where if it came down to your ESO subscription or PS+, players could re-new their PS+ subscription at a later time and continue playing The Elder Scrolls Online without interruption. To continue playing ESO on Xbox ONE players will be expected to pay both the ESO monthly fee and the Xbox Live GOLD fees as well.

I think Elder Scrolls Online will pretty much prove or disprove this business model on consoles (to most high level investors), would you say that’s fair? Skyrim and Oblivion should have paved the way for enough interest to get console gamers to pony up the fee. FFXI could be one of those fluke situations because FF is such a megaton RPG series, but if Elder Scrolls can do it – a fairly younger series coming from the West, that might just prove the business model. Outside of ESO and FFXIV I don’t really see a chance for any other MMO to hope to collect money upfront and still be successful. DCUO seems like the obvious example investors would look towards to reject the idea and opt for a Free To Play model with DLC and Micro DLC instead.

The Elder Scrolls Online is developed by Zenimax Online and published by Bethesda and will utilize the a custom engine. The MMO title is expected to debut for Windows PC, Mac OS X in April 2014 and will release on next-gen consoles PlayStation 4 and Xbox ONE some time in June 2014. The monthly fee for the PC and Mac version is $14.99 with cross-play enabled for those players. On Xbox ONE players can only play with other Xbox ONE owners and must pay the monthly fee of $14.99 plus Xbox Live GOLD in order to log in. PlayStation 4 players can play the game just by paying the monthly fee of $14.99 and will not require PS+.

At RGN we hope it all works out with the best possible results. Bethesda have stated previously that they are negotiating with Microsoft to drop the GOLD requirement on Xbox ONE and some PC gamers feel the title would be better appreciated on computers exclusively, but in any event we do hope the game is a success as we’d like to see more games like this developed.

Gamescom 2013 Attendance Record; Awards Named for Titanfall, Destiny, Elder Scrolls Online

Gamescom 2013 Awards

Gamescom 2013 announced today that its new attendance record set this year is around 340,000 visitors in attendance with 635 exhibitors showing off games to the gaming press industry. Gamescom 2013 also saw fit to reveal their awards for many various categories, most notably of which came in for Titanfall grabbing up Best Next Gen Game and Best Xbox Game, while Destiny snagged Best Action Game, Best Sony Game, and Best Online Multiplayer Game.

The Elder Scrolls Online managed to scoop up Best Role Playing Game, and the bulk award for best Casual, Social, or Online Game. Nintendo also saw some awards with Mario Kart 8 being named the Best Nintendo Game, Best Family Game, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds named the best mobile game (although technically it’s a handheld game not a mobile game). Some of Gamescom 2013’s awards seem to be conflicting, and don’t really make a ton of sense. Other awards include Forza Motorsport 5 as Best Racing Game and Battlefield 4 as the best PC Game.

If you didn’t get a chance to watch Gamescom 2013, you still can, RealGamerNewz provides full and unedited High Definition replay video of each major press conference that was held this year below. Individual articles can be found in our Gamescom 2013 section covering every trailer and bit of news that came out of the event.
