Holiday Console Dilemma

xbox-one-vs-ps4

As the holidays roll closer, I still have several friends and family members that have yet to upgrade to ps4 or xb1. And obviously, the most common question I get since I own both is, which console do you prefer and why?

Well at this point right now, PS4 is my primary gaming console. There isn’t just one reason why I have chose the PS4 as my primary console. The obvious reason would be that most games run at a native 1080p. I get that some are 60 fps and others are 30 fps but, just having them run at 1080p is an important factor. Secondly, I would say that the load times of games is much much quicker and smoother on ps4. For instance, I double dipped recently and bought Call of Duty Advanced Warfare on both consoles. I know, I know but, “it’s COD and it’s just recycled and reused material,” blah blah blah. I said the same thing myself but, I actually enjoy this COD more than any recent Call of Duty games dating back to Black Ops 1. Anwyay, back to the subject at hand, install times. When I installed COD on my ps4, it probably took 5 minutes or less. When I installed it on my xb1, it took roughly 45 minutes or more and that was from the disc! I always disconnect from the internet when I’m installing games on my xb1 as well, it seems to help here and there. But, I get that there are other factors that play into which console you will buy.

PS4-vs-Xbox-One-1

I also know that money plays a factor into what you’re going to get as well. And with the Black Friday ads rolling out, there are tons of great deals on the consoles. So let’s talk about which I think is the best value right now. In my opinion the best bang for your buck is the Assassin’s Creed Xbox One bundle. For $329 at Best Buy and Target, you get an Xbox One console with controller and both Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, as well as Assassin’s Creed Unity. With most of the bundles though dropping to about the $349 mark, you can’t really go wrong with those either. Now keep in mind I said that this is the best value for a new console and not necessarily the best quality. Not that the Xbox One is a bad console or anything.

If you want the best QUALITY, then I would highly recommend the Playstation 4. Again, it’s quick, it’s smooth and it looks great. Although, you’re still going to fork out $399 for the ps4 bundle, it’s well worth it. As seen in both the Target and Best Buy ads again, you can get a Playstation 4 console with controller, The Last of Us Remastered, and Grand Theft Auto V. While this too is a great deal with great games, $70 is a big difference in the eyes of a lot of people. But, if you can swing that amount, definitely pick up this bundle and enjoy one of the best games from last gen in The Last of Us.

So even though Microsoft is offering great deals on the Xbox One, I do highly recommend the ps4. But, I’m a fan of both and enjoy playing both consoles for different reasons. And my answer will always be this no matter what, Always, always play what you want! My opinions are my opinions and there will be many to agree and disagree. When you’re out there shopping this Black Friday, just buy whatever is going to make you happy.

Let me know what your thoughts are on this subject. Is the ps4 the better quality? Is the xb1 the better value of the two this holiday season? Which will you be getting and why?

Bungie + Destiny Accept #IceBucketChallenge and Challenge Call of Duty, George Lucas, and Joel from The Last of Us

Bungie Destiny Ice Bucket Challenge

All sales made on the bungie store until September 9, 2014 will see 20% going to charity for ALS research. I did my own Ice Bucket Challenge (here) to raise awareness and money for the research as well after being challenged by Master Frylock AKA TecRev01. Now, Bungie has accepted the IceBucketChallenge and performed it in-game via Destiny. They will now expect the same result from Jonathan Irons, the villain played by Kevin Spacey in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Joel from The Last of Us, and George Lucas assumedly in some sort of theatrical manner. In case you didn’t know, here’s more info below:

Collector’s Only #4 – Looking Back

Collector's Only Looking Back

In the last console generation gamers saw a flood of games that saw a collector’s edition or limited editon when they we’re released.  There so many of games of yester-gen that got this treatment that a lot of them felt tacked on to give the developers and publishers an extra SKU and few actually stood out to the gamer at large. in this edition of Collectors Only we take a look back at the games who’s collectors edition actually stood out and gave those gamers who invested the extra money something to be proud of.

Halo 3

Halo 3

Halo 3 arguable kicked off the Collector’s Edition crazy of last gen showing people that they can and will be successful putting the right content inside the box. The box in this case was a Master Chief helmet and included all of the items in the limited edition (extra maps, behind the scenes etc) and just look cool to put on display for all of your friends and family to bask in its glory.

The Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collection

SF25

Capcom did the unthinkable with the release of the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collection by packing in almost every Street Fighter ever created. It also contains Street Fighter 2 the animated movie and the Street Fighter IV movie, the complete soundtrack, a black belt, an art book and a certificate of authenticity this is a must own for any street fighter fan.

Infamous 2 Hero Edition/Uncharted 2 Among Thieves/The Last Of Us

Infamous 2

UC3 CollectorsTLOU Post Pandemic Edition

Sony made sure that they give their fans a lot of bang for their gaming buck in these collector’s editions with Infamous 2, Uncharted 3, and The Last of Us. There is so much content, and extra goodies in these collector’s edition that make it almost mandatory to buy them at launch or lose out on the bragging rights to those who did.

The Elders Scrolls V: Skyrim

Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was a massive gem of last generation that threw gamers into the unfamiliar region of Tamriel  and into an adventure unlike any we’ve seen before. The Collector’s Edition of Skyrim gave gamers a Behind-The-Scenes look at the development of the game, a quality art book, steelbook, Dovahkiin Dragon Statue and a leather-esque map of Skyrim not available in the standard edition.

Batman Arkham: Series

Batman Arkham asylum
Batman Arkham city cejpg

Batman Arkham origins ce

The Collector’s Editions for the Batman Arkham series has got better with each entry into the series. The teams at Rocksteady, Eidos, and WB Games has packed each collector’s set with statues, DLC, memorabilia, movies and more; leaving gamers to wonder what Batman Arkham Knight will contain in its collector’s edition.

Grand Theft Auto: V Collector’s Edition

GTA V collector's edition

Grand Theft Auto: V was the last GTA game on last gen consoles and its collector’s edition trumped the previous entries which also had an impressive package of its own. RGN fan may remember when I unboxed this marvel but in you cased you missed the video you can check it out here. Rockstar games packed this beauty with a Collector’s Edition “Los Santos” fitted cap, a bank envelope and key, a blueprint map along with Collector’s Edition DLC and steelbook of the game.

Mortal Kombat 9 Kollector’s Edition/Tournament Edition

MK9 Kollector's Editon
MK9 Tournament Edition

Netherrealm Studios and WB Games made magic when they released MK9 last gen and they believed in the title so much that they not only released a Kollector’s Edition with a limited edition statue but a Tournament Edition with a limited edition fight stick as well. The game did so well that the tournament edition sold out before the game even launched prompting the developer to re-release the MK9 fight stick with the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection.

Super Mario All Star’s 25th Anniversary Edition/ Super Mario Bros 25th Collector’s Edition Wii Console Bundle

Super Mario 25th Anniversary
Super Mario 25th Anniversary wii

Nintendo pulled out all the stops for the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros, starting the re-release of Super Mario All Star’s which contained all three of the original Super Mario Bros games as well as the “Secret Levels”. The game also came with a collector’s booklet detailing Mario’s history and CD soundtrack with music from the entire Mario franchise. Nintendo didn’t stop there as they then released an all red Wii console bundle complete with a all-red Wii-Motion plus Wii-mote as well as Wii Sports and Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Developers and publishers went all out for the games last year and this list is only all small portion of games that had a Collector’s or Limited edition package. There where more games that had a collector’s edition last gen than all of the previous gen combined, now the question is will this gen lived up to the legacy? We hope you have enjoyed this edition of “Collector’s Only” and if didn’t see your favorite games collector’s edition on the list leave us a comment below.

That’s right, for those of you who weren’t aware, there are plans to adapt Naughty Dog’s PS3 masterpiece ‘The Last of Us’ as a major motion picture.

Director Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead, Original Spider-Man trilogy) and Creative Director Neil Druckmann (The Last of Us) surprised the audience today during the Screen Gems panel at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the film adaptation. The role of Joel was not mentioned but the duo dropped a bombshell revelation on who they have in conversed with on playing Ellie; Maisie Williams. Williams is best known for her portrayal of Arya Stark on the hit HBO series Game of Thrones.

Nothing is set in stone as according to BadassDigest , “they had only met for coffee” and Druckmann asked the audience to ask Williams about the role during the Game of Thrones panel later on. Neil Druckmann is writing the film’s script while Raimi will take on the role of its producer. No director has been attached and a release date has not been set as the movie is still in the early stages.

According to Sam, the adaptation will be faithful to its source material “What’s unique is that Neil’s writing the script. I have a great deal of confidence we’re going to end up with a script that’s true to the strengths of the game.”

Here’s the Limited Edition poster being given away today.

A Remastered Uncharted Trilogy for PS4 “a good candidate” says Yoshida

uncharted_2

Having sold 18 million copies worldwide and receiving critical acclaim from gamers and reviewers alike, it is safe to say Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series has done pretty great on the PS3. With Uncharted 4: A thief’s End set to release on the PlayStation 4 in the coming future, its predecessors may end up joining it.

During an interview with Eurogamer about the strength of PlayStation’s 2014 lineup, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) chief Shuhei Yoshida refers to the Uncharted series as “a good candidate” for a PS4 remaster when asked about the possibility of more titles following in The Last of Us‘ footsteps.

“Almost 50 per cent of people who have purchased a PS4 didn’t own a PS3, and that’s lots of people that missed exclusive PS3 titles like The Last of Us, so it’s a great way to welcome those people back to PlayStation, saying this is what you missed.” Yoshida explained.

“There are requests from some consumers for games that were released later in the generation, like Uncharted, which people might have missed,” adds Yoshida. “That would be a good candidate. We don’t want to flood the market with remade games either.”

Yoshida also added that they “don’t want to flood the market with remade games either.” so nothing is set in stone, but if any game/series has a strong chance at being redone for the PlayStation, then the adventures of Nathan Drake must be pretty high on that list.

A new video has been released for developer Monolith Productions’ Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. The behind the scenes interview features the voice of main protagonist Talion, Troy Baker (The Last of Us, Saints Row IV) and lead writer Christian Cantamessa (Red Dead Redemption) as they discuss working together on the game.

According to the two, everything included in the game was done so to drive the story forward. “There’s not one scene in this game that is superfluous,” explains Baker. “Everything is incredibly purposeful, and if it wasn’t, it got cut.”
