Epic Games Store goes head to head with Steam, offering better incentives to devs and curators

Not that long ago we looked at the many ways Steam has severely gone downhill over recent years and even listed some viable alternatives. There weren’t many, and each had its own fair share of problems holding them back from competing with Steam in a real way. However, it appears we may finally get some competition for the defacto monopoly on PC Gaming software.

Epic Games has introduced a new revenue sharing system making it drastically cheaper to sell your games on the Epic Games Store in the face of new criticisms against Steam’s tiered system, and they’re even making it cheaper to make games with Unreal Engine 4, which has already seen a historically affordable IDE (Interactive Development Environment) compared to previous generations of the engine.

New Hellblade Details Revealed

HellBlade_MainKeyArt_01_MarkMolnar

Hosting a short AMA on twitter, developer Ninja Theory answered some questions from fans about their recently announced title, Hellblade.

NT confirmed that Unreal Engine 4 will power Hellblade though it is “too early in the game’s development to say” if it will run at 30 or 60 frames per second. Speaking of its development, 12 people have been working on it for about 4 months and the plan is to keep the number of workers under 15.

Celtic Mythology is its inspiration though specifics weren’t given. In terms of gameplay, fans can expect to play from a third-person perspective — the same with past NT games, and combat that promises to be “brutal and uncompromising.” No word yet on when we’ll be seeing gameplay footage. The team also hasn’t decided if there will be more than one weapon to choose from or just the sword.

As for a release window, it is once again “too early” to tell but Hellblade’s dev time will be shorter than normal AAA titles. And while retail distribution isn’t been ruled out, releasing the game digitally (HB is self-published) “makes sense.”

More details are below.

  • A brand new behind-the-scene footage is coming next week.
  • It is a brand new IP with new character, lead protagonist is not Kai and HB is not a Spiritual Successor to Heavenly Sword
  • Hellblade is single-player title only, there is no multiplayer and it is not an open world game
  • Boss battles will very likely play an important role in Hellblade
  • The reason for the title which is pretty much the opposite of ‘Heavenly Sword’ is because NT likes Hell and Swords
  • Ninja Theory are not using assets and ideas originally intended for Heavenly Sword 2

Stay tuned to RGN next week for the behind-the-scene video once it drops.

Virtual Reality Game Ether One Confirmed for PS4 Morpheus, Being Developed in Unreal Engine 4

Ether One

Ether One is all about being John Malkovich, well sort of. Players enter the minds of the deranged and attempt to fix their outlook on reality, heal their mental conditions, and restore peace by experiencing the storm of their mind’s eye in a first person encounter representing this metaphysical space.

Once again Unreal Engine 4 makes it possible for games to more easily bring their titles to next-gen. The Oculus Rift / PC Game Ether One was announced to be in development for PlayStation 4 today via the official development studio behind the game who said that this title will “not be on all of them”  meaning there are currently no plans to make this a 5 console game like Battlefield for example (which doesn’t always go well dev-wise).

The PlayStation Morpheus device is a virtual reality headset formally announced by Sony a few times here and there including at E3 2014. For now it seems the focus of Morpheus is to gather developers and prepare releases, with a full blown sales campaign being pushed to a later date when the public is ready see the products that will drive next-gen users into the Virtual Reality (VR Gaming) spectrum.

Epic Games Releases “Tappy Chicken” To Showcase Indie #GameDev Capabilities Of Unreal Engine 4

Tappy Chicken RealGamerNewz epic games

Unreal Engine is a household name these days. Many of us grew up with titles like Gears of War – okay fine, I’m old – I grew up with Unreal Gold, Unreal Tournament, and other stuff you never heard of – the point is Unreal doesn’t exactly ring bells in your head for indie development. Many hurdles, mainly licensing fees, have plagued indie developers attempting to gain access to a larger audience by utilizing the Unreal Engine over the years.

And while the UDK Unreal Development Kit has made intense strides in providing indie devs with real success – UE4 seeks to re-invent the wheel somewhat by offering indie devs the center floor and support. Realizing that the term “indie devs” can refer to teams that end up producing anything from the next Flappy Bird to the next COD Epic Games is seemingly offering more blanket support to their overall customer-base and implementing some of the transparency the indie scene demands for sake of productivity, collaboration, and efficiency.

In order to show that dedication, Tappy Chicken was created. Tappy Chicken is a game which publishing house Epic Games claims was made by an artist who does not have programming experience. Updates and mod support are forthcoming for the project which has been made available on Google Play, the iOS App Store, and hits the HTML5 platform in a few hours. This title is free-to-play and highlights how truly anybody can become an indie game maker with UE4’s $19.99 per year subscription (more info here).

Are you an indie developer? Let us know what you think about this post in the comments below! We are always seeking to improve our understanding of the development process and the tools being made available in the industry today.

Below is a trailer for Tappy Chicken followed by an excerpt from the Official Press Release with further information on UE4 and Tappy Chicken which was put out by Epic Games today.

“Tappy Chicken features:

  • Pretty 2D style visuals with procedural level generation
  • Easy yet hard to master gameplay
  • Small download size
  • iOS: Game Center leaderboards, achievements and iAd Network integration
  • Android: Google Play leaderboards, achievements and AdMob support
  • HTML5/WebGL: Emscripten toolchain; runs in Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera
  • Built by one artist using UE4 Blueprint visual scripting
  • Easy to modify and extend
  • UE4 code and Tappy Chicken content available through unrealengine.com”

Texas Game Developer Has Unreal Engine 4 Running On #AmazonFireTV Ahead Of Official Support From Epic Games

AmazonFireTV - Unreal Engine 4

The Amazon Fire TV has been given the first step towards full Unreal Engine 4 support (which many view as inevitable for the high-powered Android device that is sure to have mainstream support from Amazon’s existing consumer electronics customer-base). Chance Ivey (@iveytron) of development studio Chaotic Moon took it upon himself to get the Unreal Engine 4 up and running without such official support from Epic Games or Amazon, and posted up an entire How-To detailing the steps he took to get there. It makes for a great read, and overall shows that if more time and effort was put in then some sort of stable support will certainly be accomplished. After all, let’s not forget that RAGE from id Software launched on the Apple iPhone 4 way back when (and that tech was so 2011, just think what Amazon Fire TV can accomplish). If you’re a developer or hobbyist interested in trying this out for yourself, check out the Gamasutra link below the following image.
