The Evil Within or Saikobureiku (Psychobreak) as it is known in Japan, is an upcoming game from developers at Tango Gameworks and publishers at Bethesda Softworks. Also attached to this title is designer Shinji Mikami of the Resident Evil franchise. With a release date of October 21, 2014 for North American gamers, this title drops right in time for the season of horror.
As a huge fan of the survival horror theme, I am truly excited to immerse in this game. From trailers daring you to be brave enough and gameplay of high intensity, The Evil Within has definitely made my list. As expected from the genre, it is ripe with bloody and tortured gore, but even more captivating is the psychological aspect. Like most survival horror games, jump scares play a large part in the fear effect. More potent however, is the use of tension built up over many stress filled encounters with sometimes invulnerable enemies where your only chance of survival is escape.
The protagonist, Sebastian Castellanos is a detective who sets out with fellow officers, to investigate a mass murder and that’s where all hell breaks loose. He witnesses the butchering of his colleagues, but is spared and knocked unconscious. When he wakes, the world as he knows it is no more. Tortured creatures dubbed “The Haunted” and other beings lurk around every corner. Death is a constant threat and whether it’s an imposed illusion or a legitimate break in psyche, Sebastian does not know what is real anymore. He’s trapped in a twisted reality where nothing is safe and even healing can be detrimental.
All in all I am really hyped up to play this game. It’s exciting and fully committed to the horror aspect of the genre. I look forward to the paranoid, jumpy, “don’t you dare leave me alone in this house” side effects. The Evil Within, ladies and gentlemen.
