Warner Bros. recently revealed when fans can expect to download Batman: Arkham Knight‘s next DLC, starring Batgirl. Now WB Montreal (Arkham Origins) who developed the DLC, have shared new info on its plot and gameplay mechanics. Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl will team up with Robin in order to save her Father Commissioner Gordon, from the clutches of the Joker and Harley Quinn.
The DLC takes place before 2009’s ‘Arkham Asylum’ and is set in a brand new area called the Seagate Amusement Park. The Joker has turned the nautical them park into massive death trap. “We wanted to recreate the feeling of being trapped in a bizarre and unique open environment playing a game of cat and mouse with the Joker,” says design producer Justin Vazquez, speaking with EW.com.
Batgirl’s combat style differs from Batman’s, as it is a combination of his Brawn and her computer-genius intellect. Her hacking skills will allow her to solve puzzles, takedown her opponents and control objects.
“Hacking is really what separates her from the other characters. It’s a gameplay mechanic with which the player can create situations for Batgirl to really shine,” Vazquez says. “Our intention was that Batgirl should be less powerful than Batman, but that Batgirl plus hacking could give her opportunities do things that not even Batman can pull off.”
Arkham Knight’s popular Dual Play system will make its return, allowing players to switch between Batgirl and Robin when fighting the bad guys and pull off dual takedowns. The developer promises an “epic tag-team throwdown” between Batman’s sidekicks and the Joker and Harley. “Seeing these four iconic characters together at the same time will be a real thrill,” Vazquez says. Harley will be wearing her iconic black and red outfit from Batman: The Animated Series.
There will be side quests, collectibles left behind by the Joker and Easter eggs for hardcore DC Comics fans to find. “[It’s] a love letter to the original game that started this incredible franchise,” says Vazquez.
Batgirl: A Matter of Family will launch on July 14th for those who purchase the Arkham Knight season pass ($40). It can be purchased separately on July 21 for $6.99.
