With all of the game consoles we’ve seen come and go over the years, from the Nintendo NES to the Sega Dreamcast and beyond and everywhere in between, it’s only right we should hope to reap the rewards of such a fantastic voyage. As gamers that have been in it for the long haul, and still are, the RealGamerNewz.com crew constantly find ourselves asking “Where are all the new IPs?”.
The path is not clear, and it all but seems the New IP has become a dying breed amongst a land fill of sequels, threequels, prequels, remakes and remasters that you already played before, saw in a better light, or even worse PAID FOR several times across several platforms in the past.
The next generation of game consoles is upon us: PlayStation 4, Xbox 720, and the Steambox, for lack of better names at the moment, are all set to be revealed to us over the coming months. Already we are hearing talk of existing franchises taking the lead on these new pieces of hardware, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
However, there just isn’t as many breakaway waves of new IPs hitting the industry as of yet. Hopefully the next generation of gaming brings with it a flow of new titles and gives birth to new series that will re-invigorate life back into dead and dying genres.
The increasing technology of indie game developers coupled with phenomenal advancements expected with PSN, XBL, and Steam within the next couple of years could bring about the new IPs we need, surely enough success could generate a larger investment from larger corporations as seen with the PlayStation 3 indie developers and Sony themselves (as well as 360 and Microsoft Partners such as EA).
The difference between large corporations investing in New IPs or not is their confidence that we will buy them. In the end it all comes down to us, the gamers.
If you aren’t willing to invest in new ideas then you will continue to be fed the same content over and over again. Already the next generation titles being shown have just a few New IPs sprinkled among many existing franchise entries.
Be sure to support the new kid on the block and invest in a good idea. Some titles that come to note include Bungie’s Destiny set to be revealed on RealGamerNewz Nex Gen Channel tomorrow morning as well as Respawn Entertainment’s next brand-new shooter IP.
If we continue to buy indie products, new risky IPs being made by companies large and small, games that we MIGHT NOT TOTALLY LOVE but are unsure of, then New IPs do stand a chance even in today’s cut-throat market. There’s a lot of room for improvement on existing game mechanics and there’s a lot of creative license that can be taken to keep everything fresh and yet learning from the past as it evolves in terms of gameplay and graphics.
